Hunt should have never have been captain. Would have been better for everyone, including his own game. But now it's done, a bit of an issue for next year. I don't really know who are the talkers. Wouldn't surprise me if Flanno goes with Holmes.

Please vote, 2 choices. poll closes midway though Jan when it should be known.

Edited because this was made before Gutho signed.

I'd go cook c & gutho vc with Su'a forming part of the leadership group. Cook/Gutho/Su'a trifecta.

Might be Cook. I'd prefer it was a player who is on for 80min but I'm sure Flanno has a plan if it is Cook.
It would mean co-captains wouldn't it? Might mean Cook and Su'A. If it was Cook and Gutho, why wouldn't they just go with Gutho? Same with Cook and Holmes. Cook and de Belin will probably go for a rest at about the same time, after 25~30min.

JDB is my first choice but I know there are some problems with that. Given things which weren't a crime but which a lot of sponsors would frown upon in his past, given he's not going to be on for 80min and given he is only contracted for one year. IMO should just give it to Gutho. Ticks all the boxes except that he is newcomer. Didn't bother Crighton at the Bullgrubs, shouldn't bother the Dragons now.

JDB is still my first choice but I'm just a punter. Pretty sure those who make the decisions will calculate he isn't the best choice.

I would be very surprised if it isn't Gutho. I expect Cook to be in the senior leaders team along with maybe JDB and S'ua?

Su’A ready for senior role at Dragons, provides captaincy update

The Dragons are yet to confirm their captain for 2025.

St George Illawarra Dragons' second-rower Jaydn Su'A has given the clearest indication yet that the club's new captain for 2025 will be a player who wasn't at the joint venture in 2024.

Surely that means Gutho. Surely he will be a much better captain than Hunt.

You would assume Gutho will be one, I mean direct quote from Flanno in his interview the other day with Jimmy was that Cookie would also be one of the captains. Doesnt mean its set in stone but thinking a leadership team with co-captains makes sense, both of them provide so much more than Hunt on and off the field.

I think Su'a was quoted before as saying he was gonna put his hand up, but when Gutho and Cook arrived, he was like naaaaa..

I dont think Su'a is a natural born captain, but given the void of leadership, he was probably steeling himself to do it.. its tbh similar to Hunt, Widdop & Creagh... I dont think any of those blokes wanted to be captains, but literally someone had to do it.

Ignoring his off field reputation I couldn’t have JDB as captain.
He hasn’t shown me that he has the attributes of a captain.
Doesn’t come across as footy intelligent, doesn’t appear to have any rapport with the refs, judiciary issues & won’t play 80 minutes.

He leads by example but yeah, doesn't seem like enough of a talker to be captain.

To give it cool thought and careful consideration, he probably wouldn't be the best captain even if ignoring off-field issues. But I think he deserves more accolades than he gets for carrying the pack for a number of years.

The age old question what makes a good team captain . In my experience I looked for a number of attributes. To me a captain has to have these attributes:
Be experienced
Be respected and show respect to others
Have integrity
Be a good communicator
Be a good listener
Have a positive attitude
Be a problem solver
Lead by example both on and off the field
Be a good role model for others to be inspired to become

Very few are true leaders or can become leaders, being the best player in the team was never one of my considerations when selecting a team and club captain.

My choices would be Gutherson and Cook.

You simply cannot ignore on field or off field indiscretions by a player. I wouldn't even consider him. Love him as a player who has a wonderful tackling technique and has played out of position for his team for many years now but no captain

Co-captains? If it was going to be Cook, I could understand that because he won't be on for 80 min. But if Gutho, why have a co-captain?

St George Illawarra have wasted little time in exploiting their veteran recruitment spree by naming new signings Damien Cook and Clint Gutherson co-captains for the 2025 NRL season. With former skipper and halfback Ben Hunt released from the final year of his contract last October, the Dragons needed to fill the leadership void. They have decided to go down the co-captaincy route and lean on the experience of the two former NSW State of Origin representatives.

With inaugural St George Illawarra captains Mark Coyne and Paul McGregor watching on at Wollongong Golf Club, the Dragons on Monday announced Cook and Gutherson as their leadership pairing. Gutherson, 30, held a similar role at Parramatta for seven seasons. He was just 23 when he was named Eels co-captain in 2018 alongside Beau Scott and Tim Mannah. In recent seasons, he shared leadership duties with prop Junior Paulo before joining the Red-V.

Nice to see Mary still hanging around and there being no bad blood as there often is when one is sacked.
