1st Grade Readiness

I agree with you Flanno has been way too conservative. Couchmans were killing it in reserve grade for most of 2024.

But as to who you are talking about, the question is who had a lot of talent, was put in too early, lost a lot of confidence and ended up never being ad good as they were expected to be.
I think Flanno kept the Couchmans in reserve grade, because of their lack of size/body shape and wanted them to develop physically before putting them in the middle forward rotation. I don't think them debuting at a young age had dented their confidence or hampered them in not becoming good forwards in the future, but I am not disagreeing with you either.

They more than held theor own in 2023.

I thought Holmes was great in the centres last year. If I was coach, there is no way I would be moving him to the wing. Maybe fullback, but not wing. Holmes, along with Gutho was a major reason Tuipulotu was scoring many tries and having a good season last year.
I'm a huge Holmes fan. He's a very good centre or winger. Pretty good fullback as well. But at this stage, maybe forever like Gaz and Coops, Buchanan and Heidke are very good centres only.

i think if we cop an injury then sure Reed plays some games ahead of ONeill now.. but just a few.. not a season.. and I dont think he can play 80mins either.. he was making all sorts of errors in that 2nd half and thats a trial without the workload they will send his way in a real game.

But the Kyle to 9 to cover Liddle thing is something I cant get out of my head.. I think its absurd yet I also can't think of the alternative.. unless we are yet to sign someone in the next few weeks which is hopefully what we are doing... that someone I assume will be the cup 9 if Liddle/Cook stay fit.
I'm usually ultra aggressive about promoting young players. Probably a bit too much. Or definitely a bit too much. But even I can't imagine Reed playing NRL without at least several games in NSW Cup. But I'm sure the coaching staff knows what is going on so I'll just trust them. If they were to pick Reed for round 1, it'll mean he's ready.

How good was he? If he can prove his defence is good enough in NSW Cup and the NRL halves are struggling, I could see him getting a chance around the Origin period.

Josh Hannay insists he won’t ruin development of prodigy Zane Harrison as he prepares to unveil new-look Titans

Gold Coast coach Josh Hannay has promised not to butcher the development of “complete package” halfback Zane Harrison as Titans fans prepare for their first glimpse of the club’s new era

The Titans have had many promising playmakers fail throughout the club’s history, with the likes of Ash Taylor, Kane Elgey, Tanah Boyd, Jamal Fogarty, Toby Sexton, Beau Henry and Tom Weaver moving on to varying futures.

Boyd, Fogarty and Sexton have kicked on at other clubs while the likes of Taylor and Elgey were lost to the game at a young age.

Hannay is acutely aware of how important managing the development of Harrison will be to the future success of the Titans and said he wouldn’t be rushing the teenage prodigy into an NRL debut.

“At the end of my first week here I started asking some questions about Zane and if he could tackle because with the football he was electric,” he said.

“I was told straight away the toughness and the tackling side of it wasn’t an issue for him.

Flanno said very similar things about Kade.
I wonder what 2 NRL coaches know that goes against that old cliche

"If they are good enough they are old enough "

Reed should play half a season in reserve grade at least and then only be considered if the first grade halves aren't going well. But definitely be considered almost a certainly for round 1, 2027 if his game in reserve grade continues to flourish.

A Harrison 7, Campbell 6 looks the Gold Coast best option to me. Brimson, hasn't set the world on fire at 5/8. Fullback is his best position, but Kini has that spot now. I think it is just a matter of when, not if Harrison and Campbell are Gold Coast halves. I also think Campbell is more suited to 5/8 than halfback. It is pretty much exactly the same scenario with us, with Reed our future number 7 and Acko more suited to 5/8. Harrison is already 19. Kini debuted at 18 and was very good. He is also very small. When I was playing in my juniors, the good players would play up a year or 2 and still play excellent.

I am in the If they are good enough they are old enough camp.

Personally I don't think the above mentioned Gold Coast halves were good enough or at the very least, weren't special. I don't think an extra year in reserve grade would have been the difference between them being special or not either.

Many a good player aged 17 or 18 didn't play reserve grade before playing first grade. Back in my day, many good players played first grade while still at school or played first grade the next year after finishing school, without any reserve grade games. I am pretty sure Jamie Ainscough and Jason Taylor went straight from schoolboy football to first grade. Darrel Trindall was playing first grade while still at school. Phil Blake was amazing at 18 for Manly. I don't think Terry Hill played reserve grade before debuting for Souths. Brad Fittler was still at school when playing first grade for Penrith and I think he played origin the next season. Peter Sterling was small and lightly framed. He was playing first grade at 18 and became one of the best halfbacks to ever play the game. Nathan Cleary debuted for Penrith aged 17. He also became the best halfback in the game. Galvin played one game in NSW cup before playing first grade aged 18. It certainly didn't do him any harm or ruin him or destroy his confidence. Reed is already 19 years old. He has also spent time playing against grown men in the Illawarra comp and played very well.

Reed strikes me as the type of player who will play better along side better team mates. Players who can hit holes or run better lines will make Reed look better and he will make them look better. Players who are better in the air or better chasing short kicks will make Reed look better and vise versa. Reed looks to have a better long kicking game than Flanno or King Togia.

If we were playing one off grand final type of game. Winner takes all. I would be picking Reed ahead of Kyle or King Togia.
Anyway. I doubt Flanno will drop Kyle for Reed after training him at 5/8 all pre season. If we do happen to be going very well, that will make it even harder for Reed to break into the first grade team this year.
