New GM Football - Ben Creagh

Creagh taking the reigns of the Football Department at least for the time being.

Looks like one of the immediate decisions being made is around Su'A and an early release.
Looking at the Parra roster there doesnt appear to be a lot there that we would be interested in that they would consider releasing.

If Lomax were still in play it may have been a more interesting conversation (guessing no actual mail).

Will be interesting to see what happens here and how the Watsford/Creagh/Anderson/Young relationships mould the future for us.

They might have someone, like a fast outside back in Jersey Flegg or SG Ball that Dragons fans generally have never heard of.

I hope they let Su'A go. Nothing against him as a player but we have so many young backrowers who might turn out better is the near future.

The one thing with having everyone from the same group is who will say no? who will have the differing opinion? someone like DA is more important now, as he's potentially the different voice. You need pushback & different perspective. All the best to Ben, he was a great player & seems like a wonderful person too

I think we should be exploring the idea of Lomax coming back with giving Su'A and early release. That is if Lomax wants to come back and could get out of his union contract. I would give Lomax a run at fullback. That is the position he wanted to play the most. Lomax could say he is "homesick" lol

Ben Creagh will be tasked a big responsibility as the GM of Football for the Dragons. One thing for sure is that his heart will be totally there for the club. He and Dean have known each other for years as players and now as part of the Joint Venture Organisation.

This is what he would be involved with as the GM:-

The General Manager (GM) of Football in the NRL oversees the entire football department, driving high-performance culture, recruitment, pathways, and salary cap management. They act as the bridge between coaching staff and the CEO, focusing on team performance, medical, and logistics.
  • Performance Leadership: Managing the NRL program and creating a high-performance environment.
  • Recruitment & Pathways: Overseeing roster management, recruitment, and junior pathways.
  • Administration & Budget: Managing football operations, including salary cap compliance and staff management, reporting to the CEO.
  • Strategic Planning: Driving long-term success and culture.

Essentially, while the head coach manages the team on the field, the GM of Football manages everything else to ensure the football department operates efficiently.

Interview with Ben Creagh behind a paywall in DT. Doesn't really have much to say. Highlights are:

Watsford wanted him to take over the position he now has. That what he says anyway. It wasn't the board.

Nothing has been decided on coach from next year yet. They are giving Dean Young some time and breathing space to show what he can do. That's fair enough.

As for the off contract players who have had negotiations for new deals paused, they also have time to show what they can do on the field.

Su'A wasn't offered a long-term deal and that's why he went to Parra. It sounds like this is a polite way of saying, "We didn't make him an offer beyond his current deal".
