Easter means quite a bit to us catholics. Hope is one of those things. Now I realise we are at the end of round 7 only. But I just thought I would share some of that Easter hope.
In my coaching days I relied heavily upon my statistics man busily tapping away on his computer. Luckily for me my stats man was a computer nerd who could interogate these statistics and provide me with easily understandable graphs . Now yes statistics can be manipulated and can tell you what you want to see in them but helped me greatly so just speaking from personal experience.
However here is some Easter hope. If
you look at the previous statistics in relation to a team that has made the top 8 in recent seasons.
The avg points per game that is given up is approximately 20 points a game over the whole season, so 24 rounds x 20 the against column would be 480. In recent years teams have made the top 8 with avg as high as 28 points per game.
Based on that one statistics we are on track defensively this early in the season to making the top 8. We currently sit 3rd in the points against column giving up 19.66 points per game . That is promising and gives you hope.
Now compare that with what is required in your attacking avg to make the top 8 you need to avg 26 points per game. We are avg 23 points a game . We sit 10th in this statistic. So not too far off.
Shows you how important it is to have a good goal kicker that can not only convert tries but kick penalty goals. It also helps to have a player or players who can kick the 1/2 point field goals when required.
So statistically we are not far off, there will be variables during the season, injuries, team depth and will include the odd blow out loss that even the best teams this season have had.
There is an old saying, " Attack wins you games, defence wins you premierships".
Im not for one minute saying we will win the competition, we wont. But if we can continue to play consistently during the regular season, keep our points against in the vicinity it is currently in. Then I honestly believe that we will finish at the bottom end of the top 8 and play semi finals football this season. Something we haven't achieved since 2018.
I hope that you, your family and friends have a Happy and safe Easter. God bless.
