Moving Forwards 2026/2027

Ok now this is just my views from an old coaches perspective.

Moving forwards this season and because we are playing the Titans there is no better time to see if this would work, we need to tinker with our spine.

Now I am not privy to the internal politics of our club but this is what I would do with what I have got available.

If Sloan has learnt enough at training shadowing Gutherson and is able to organise our defensive line from fullback then he is in. I've been impressed with his ressies performances this season, he was our leading try scorer last season with 17.

I know my ears are already burning, yes his defence has had to improved otherwise this move is doomed to fail.

Some will say move Holmes from centre to fullback, Sloan is yesterday's news but to my eyes I dont believe Holmes has the legs to play full back on a full time basis.

Gutherson is a very good leader and organiser, with ball in hand he is still dangerous albeit lacks the initial pace, he needs more ball in hand.

So if I'm going to roll the dice with Sloan at fb, because we do really need that speed and the ability to score tries from distance in that position then Gutherson goes to 6 and organise our attacking structures.

Im afraid the current 6 goes back to ressies, unless your going to carry him and Liddle off the extended bench.

Atkinson is developing slowly as a game manager but his kicking game was equal if not better than Moses last week and Moses is a SOO half back.

But he needs to reignite his running game and I feel that his current halves partner is styming that part of his game.

So he stays 7 until Reed develops physically enough for the rigours of week in week out 1sts, I'd say 2027. Then for me, Atkinson to 6 where he has played the majority of his games.

The plus here is come 27 we will have genuine play makers on both sides of the ruck but one if not both need to run the ball if we are to be successful.

Turning to the 9, Cook is still very good, his distribution is top shelf. However every man and his dog can see the opposition regards him as a danger so they run at him all game. He does a lot of tackling which nullifies his attacking prowess.

Liddle needs more time on the paddock but Cook is the better defender. So even minutes would serve us better. Cook first 25, then Liddle 15/20 min each side of oranges. Then Cook to seal up the middle of the park in the last 20 min.

We will have an engine room which in my opinion will be the envy of most teams in 27. But we need to do something different now if we are going to climb out of our current position on the table. Im sick of losing. Just my views.

Personally i think lids should be on after about 30 min. Flano held him back too long too often.
But now with the way the bench operates Flano will be thinking back of his mind what about an injury to a back/half and he will be less likely to burn the 4th interchange player on Liddle in the first half. KK will help though, if he can play longer minutes as shown then Lids becomes the 3rd interchange player used not the 4th.

If I was coach, I would move Leilua to the prop rotation. For 2027 have a pack of
8 Leilua
9 Liddle
10 Koloamatangi
11 Sua
12 Egan
13 Stewart

14 Cook
15 R Couchman
16 T Couchman
17 Halangahu
With no injuries to backs have an interchange of something like
Bring Toby on for Leilua afte 20 mins
Bring Ryan on for Stewart after 25 min The Couchmen can both play the rest of the game after coming on
Bring Cook on for Liddle after 25 mins
Bring Leilua on for Koloamatangi after 55 mins
Bring Halangahu on for Egan after 60 mins
Bring Cook on for Liddle after 65 mins
Bring Koloamatangi on for Leilua after 70 mins

I would be having a close look at Burton and if I like what I see putting him straight into first grade at fullback, if we can't sign a really good one

I would be signing Jenkins to play wing
I would be seeing if Souths would release Graham and if he was interested in signing with us and playing him in his preferred centre position.
Holmes can play centre, wing or fullback, whatever suits and fits in with the roster we have.
Gutho could play centre or may be on the bench and only get game time if an injury occurs to one of our backs. He can cover 5/8, centre or fullback.
I would be offering Purdue 950K a year and the promise of him playing fullback. If we got him, Burton would probably be one of my wingers. I would like a backline of

1 Purdue/Burton/Holmes
2 Burton/Holmes
3 Graham
4 Holmes/Gutho
5 Jenkins
6 Acko
7 Reed

18 Gutho

or Gutho could play centre and Holmes to wing

Liddle or Cook need to be played as a lock, should be easier to do under current rules with more fatigue in play & beneficial as both are quick. It'd also reduce the requirement of Stewart ball playing at lock as I think he's a better ball runner right now. I'd say Stewart gives us some quick ptb too with his ability to find the front or stay upright in tackles. Both Cook & Liddle should be on the field for the last 20 imo.

I would agree with most of that, especially the back line changes. It's no good saying we have no chance of getting someone, we have to aggressively go after our main targets otherwise there would be no KK. And now D. Anderson is here hopefully it's quietly done with Flanno not uttering a word.
Sharpe at Newcastle if possible is top line and worth big money, they are difference makers.

Only problem is then you have 2 small defenders to run at. They'll probably play together this week.

If I'm not mistaken Mug Fan Mug Fan suggested Burton is going from U17s to Jersey Flegg (U21s) this year! Does that mean playing first grade might be on the agenda for next year?

Though Bula has been about to extend with the Tigers for a couple of months now but I believe still hasn't. If we got hom for 3 years so Burton can play Flegg and reserve grade next year then wing for 2 years.

You can't waste 2 interchanges on our 9 to get Lids involved early, Cook needs to come back on at 13 as Dave said.

I think Burton will debut sometime next year and be permanent in 28.

I have Bula at roughly a 50/50 chance of signing with the Dragons for 2027. The Tigers look intent on keeping their young core together and may be facing some cap pressure that keeps them around the $800k mark. Bula probably sees himself as a $900k plus player, and the Illawarra setup would be a pretty appealing alternative.

That's good to know about Burton. Flanno finally learning from his mistakes.
