Round 17 vs Eels

Not sure if Flanno was just deflecting as a coach under fire (which is completely fair as that was the situation), but identifying CT/Feagai as our first choice wingers and comparing them to Katoa/Mulitalo does make me sad for our future recruitment, because I dont think we can afford to have 0 finishers each week..

Genuinely the difference in most games is oppositions easily score those half chances.. the number of times Sloan gets pushed out or doesnt run 100% into the space (obviously because he gets pushed out so easily, I get the problem), or CT/Feagai/Allan get swallowed up before they even start to accelerate into a gap the team has created.. its 6-12 points a game, and thats most of our losses right there.

I mean maybe its fine if we have our cap money invested in a genuine A++ forward pack, that we can then afford to run budget-priced tanks in the backline.., but I just don't think that's going to be a reality... from the day we missed AFB.. that ship sailed imo.

And lots of other ships after that Rev.

Su'A back and Toby to middle is just about our best pack.

Cup have two games for Finau and Ilias to press their claims for selection.

What a shameless our wingers have been this year, form and injury wise.
Sloan has gone backwards every game, at this point I'd swap him for Rava.

The OBs will be an interesting selection.

Was trying to work out a way to keep Nick in the 17 because I think he did a good job out in the centres , their isn’t really a lineup in the outside backs where it works with him unless you put Holmes on the wing but he’s too good in attack at left centre to move him

Shane’s got some big decisions to make that’s for sure

Lawson has been a big disappointment so far but I think he's worth sticking with for a bit longer.

He's been great at ctr but he's a massive upgrade on the wing compared to our available wingers, honestly I hope we give a block of games to finau. I'd just go with Suli & Nick T at centre with Holmes & Finau on the wings.

I’m getting sick and tired of saying it but we don’t help ourselves with the pressure we allow on the wingers when they have to catch bombs.

Every time our opposition kicks it’s beyond halfway pretty much and becomes an attacking kick

Holistically, so many issues would be solved if they could just pen teams in their own half. The fact the coach and coaching staff haven’t identified this or they have but can’t find a solution is a major worry

Nick T stays in centres; Holmes to the wing (he drops the ball too much in the centres; ,Sloane dropped (after the high ball fiasco) ; Lawson dropped….

To practice : catching bombs; offloads, kicks other than safety first into the corner

PS—I would add Kyle droppped but we all know “best on the field” is not going to be dropped even to the bench

Holmes movement off the ball and ability to create something from nothing at centre is too important to shift him IMO, doesn’t help LKT either with that left edge if we shuffle the guys he’s trying to form combinations with. I’m on board with Nick maybe having the role Egan had where he played back row for the first 20 mins before Luciano comes on

We saw Lawson debut against the Knights who played poorly that night with no pressure on him and allowed him some freedom, so we assumed a good debut BUT look at what has happened since 2 games where he has made multiple mistakes. Simply put in his current state he is neither the answer on the wing or centre. He needs to go back to cup for a period of time to get the skills needed. Finau needs to be there.

Flanno did speak about letting the sharks get to attacking kicks again and again.. none of our wingers are gonna survive that level of bombardment.. not facing good kickers and athletic catchers.. its why I disliked the pile-on Feagai copped early in the year where Burton iirc kicked to him all night long... that said Sloan did drop some that were very catchable.

Something ive noticed this year also is there are very few traditional bomb catches anymore.. teams send an attacking body right through the catchers space, either pretending to go for a catch, or pretending to go for a bat-back (or sometimes actually legit going for it), either way its harder than ever to take a clean catch anymore... which is why I understand why sometimes catchers pull out late versus a near guaranteed knockon.

But much like Burton and Humphries kicking against us .. if we let teams walk over us and get all the time in the world to put up and contest bombs.. were going to have a bad time.

Unfortunately for Nick he replaced a player on SOO duty not injury or form.
With Su'A back, Toby goes to middle, Guler drops out.
The bench is Loko, Hamish and Sele. So Nick misses out there too.

There was a lot of hype around Lawson that may of been over the top.
I've seen nothing from him in Cup and FG to say that he will anything more then an average FGer.

There has been no standout games, no wow moments, no step no flash speed, just good solid runs.
Good solid runs and tackles made > than Sloan and Feagai.
But certainly not enough for a first grade winger.
