Rallied to snatch victory 20-16 and keep their paper thin season chances alive.
I see SG Ball team is also a bit ahead coming into halftime. What's going on there? Bulldogs missing some of their best or Saints team getting it right?

Probably a bit of both. Gotta say their pack dont impress me even with the much hyped Stanley-Traill in it. There is tho a new prop, Garylee Tohovaka that looks to have something. There was also another big bopper bookend I liked. Must be injured.

Last minute converted try sees Bulldogs snatch a draw. Maybe Saints U19s have turned the corner.

Steelers HM U17's vs Wests:
Had to watch this one in the car, luckily it was fairly soundproof.

First Half Notes:
  • Very willing Wests side, rly jolting first contact every time we hit it up.. every time.. plus they have held up atleast 3 times in the first half.. So we've done rly well to stay with them on the scoreboard.. That said missed opportunities also....
  • Noone rly as a stand out in the side in this half... some of the runs have looked good, but west's have been up for it..
  • Lot of chat coming from west's... Mason Andrews our big prop has been copping it after losing a balls early... but was later able to crash over later and he let Wests know.. The crowd is carrying on the entire match also (like yikes), both fan groups in the one stand I guess. West's also must train to get 2-3-4 bodies to try and carry anyone over the touchline within 5m of it... very physical team, all game they had us being pushed right to the touchline.... Anyway 6-6 at half time
2nd Half Notes:
  • Brutal footy... they hit Brookfield late after his pass and a Wests forward was sent to the bin.. But it did us no good, as Wests were able to score anyway and convert from out wide, score is 6-12.
  • Ollie Burton slices thru and goes over but they've called it back and I don't know why.. It was all pace/skill.. Hes now involved in some push and shove too, west's boys r rly under our skin... its working for them too.
  • I did want to mention CMeafou who I have carried on about in the past (wax lyrical as Jack would say), but he hasn't had a game like his first one since then.. Hes been fine, but he's not breaking games open like earlier when I was calling for his promotion.. Often don't really notice him.. He does run a lot odd decoys though. However I wrote this paragraph in the 1st half.. and just moved it to the 2nd half... because he definitely came out with some big strong runs when we really needed it to stay in the contest.. also did the talking to ref etc.. was much needed, and needs to make sure he gets involved as much as possible.
  • #4 MacGregor has been rly strong, reminds me a bit of Timmo in SG Ball... backed himself there and made a long range run breaking tackles.. Off the back of it on last tackle.. We were able to spread it thru Brookfield and Ollie, creating just enough space for the winger to dive into the corner.. Just enough.. But out wide.. Holy shit he kicked it 12-12, 7min to go.
  • Ollie m***** f***ing Burton.. Opens them open and runs 70m to score all on his own! Holy sh**t, the Burto Burto call is in the crowds.. goalkick is missed but 16-12... its the final minute of the game.... game over. Great win for their confidence... unbeaten after 4 matches.

WTF is going on with the Steelers SG Ball? I wouldn't go so far as to say flogged but are getting comprehensively beaten.

Scratch that. They are getting flogged.

Steelers SG U19's vs Wests:
Hold up.. Borg must be injured.. Kirk is @ fullback, and Tomo is in for Timmo.. and then Kye Andrews (I've never heard of) has taken Kirks spot on the wing.. lot of change.. the good thing is Reed is back on deck to partner Fitzy.

Taufa is back the big prop.. DMeafou now a starting lock finally, still no Weatherall.

First Half Notes:
  • Nearly score in the opening minute but a good tackle on Heidke..
  • But Kirk has gotten himself sinbinned in the 2nd minute.. couldnt clean up a kick and briefly grabbed the jersey of his opponent.. disappointing and there was plenty of defence.
  • It costs us as Wests crash over for their first after 3mins.
  • 7th minute - wests in out wide this time.. being punished for Kirks sinbin.
  • Kirk is back but we are not making our tackles.. and the boys are out on their feet after 14minutes... whats worse is that after making mistakes or missing tackles.. noone is cleaning up the loose ball or ball carrier.. its a really bad habit and they are getting a lot of free metres off it.
  • Argh 3 blokes in a tackle and he lands on Kirks leg with the first hip drop tackle of 2025.. ffs.. omg not even a penalty.. thats insane.. they will get him on video footage surely.
  • They grubber through and Kirk cant turn on his bung leg.. wests score millimetres from the deadball line.. o m g. Kirk will go off I assume now.
  • Finally something goes our way.. nice run from Mason to Fitz to Reed to Langdon who finishes it nicely... rly strong breeze pushes an otherwise perfectly placed kick off.. 4-14.
  • Another nice run, 9>6>7>21 (Kye Andrews who is playing fullback for the injured Kirk) who runs with pace to cut a nice gap open.. and gets it away to Heidke who nearly finished it but is ankle tapped.. doesnt matter as Kye again from dummy half gets a long ball to Reed who puts Meafou into a little space and the big unit no problems knocking the defender away and spinning over for a try near the sticks 10-14 still in it..
  • omg Mason Phillips chips for himself regathers easily, and deadset was over the line to score but held up.. oh man.. we would have had the lead... we dont finish the set well.. wests go the length and score on half time.. damn... 10-18.
2nd Half Notes:
  • Gah missed tackles from 2 of our bench players in the middle.. their halfback goes thru and puts someone thru under the sticks.. 10-24.
  • We defended well for a few minutes on our line.. but eventually it told.. the same #19 from wests who scored the last try slices thru hard between Phillips and DMeafou.. dissapointing again.. 10-30.
  • Something gone our way.. Reed puts a grubber into the ingoal, which is flat out fumbled by the defender.. picks it up and scores.. 14-30... struggling to goalkick in the breeze.
  • omg Reed reaches out and puts it over the line.. he was about to blow the try and decided nup.. hes gonna let wests pick it up and run off instead.
  • Next wests try.. just barged over 6 of us under the posts.. 14-36.
  • Had a chance on their line, Phillips with a cheeky ball over the defence to an unmarked winger Tomo(who is actually a Ctr on debut.. but everyone is out of position due to Kirk/Borg), im not sure if he missed the catch or not.. but it sailed close to his hands and in to touch... not a great debut for Tomo.. but then its not a great game for any of the steelers.
  • Sheez the Wests 2nd rower is breaking ankles.. steps 90 degrees and gets it to the 6 who runs a nice angle to beat tired defenders.. final score 14-42.
I think we were in trouble early with Borg & Timmo out before the match.. it really disrupted us.. followed by the hip drop tackle on Kirk.. but even with that.. and that try came off Kirk being unable to turn around.. we still could have went into half time in front..

But.. bit of a wake up call perhaps.. we are out of finals contention currently.. and Wests are not a top side.. we are going to have to step up our game with 4 rounds left.. still havent seen Weatherall, and im not sure the injury status of Kirk/Borg/Timmo.

There are only 4 rounds left? What? I thought this competition ran until July!

  • gosh how quickly injury cruels the season.. Daniel is getting better every week, with weatherall and taufa.. maybe they can set a platform.. Still got Reed and Fitz there..
  • Heidke has been the stand out centre, but Timmo has really been not far behind him.. not as classy but almost as effective and bluddy tough (I assume he is Shauns kid so im sure he would be bought up that way).. think he will really miss him.. Tomo looks a little slimmer than those boys, but interested to see him get a crack at ctr, most of the game today he seemed unused on the wing... but its a big step up. They could also throw Buchanan back there.. but I think maybe the kid should stay up a grade, season kicks off next week anyway.
  • The other positive might be Kye Andrews I thought he really took his opportunity today.. id probably keep him at fullback if Borg isnt back.. failing that maybe onto the wing, he was fast and confident...
  • In terms of Jersey Flegg positions... MCL though.. maybe Kirk still gets half a season in Jersey Flegg.. is Timmo out for just SG season or everything? Gotta say we seem all in on Buchanan, but definitely a few centres coming up behind him putting real pressure on.. but Buchanan has had 1 or even 2 preseasons with 1sts + flegg and cup experience...its a good head-start.
