Match Notes (NSW Cup Trial):
  • 2 Early mistakes from Nick.. wonder if that's related to not being on the vegas plane (one of 2 Top30 players that didn't go).. lost balls in his carries.. they've put him at right ctr for some reason.. after the 2nd error though, seems they've moved him in to the 2nd row.
  • No Heidke which is a concern (hope not injured)... no Loko either.. very much more concern.
  • These dogs are so grubby.. the ball keeps 'suddenly popping out' of a near completed tackle with 3 men in it.. sometimes up to 5m away.. and its being judged as our error.
  • try each way nothing special in the early game. then a nice ball from Reed to Coutts who is now on at left 2nd row.. easy try. 12-4.
  • Webster has been solid as the kind of alpha prop in the wake of no Liu and no Loko etc.
  • Nice 30-20 from O'Neill before half time, and after a repeat set we go in with a nice Reed > ONeill > TPH Long Ball > Kirk.. just fast enough to get it into the corner.. casual side line conversion from Reed 18-4 Half time.
  • *ONeill puts Kirk away again with a cut out ball, will be a good addition to the cup squad I feel.. not sure he will ever step up though.. 22-4.
  • nice lil move from reed to put hutcho into space.. great run and off the back Shadi Hammoud scores from right ctr.. nice to see the kid back and find a place for him.. though doubt he can fit once everyone else returns.. maybe jersey flegg. 26-8.
  • Meh charge down off Reeds boot (made a huge noise) and they get a cheap try 26-14.
  • Saifiti Jr leaps and takes a bomb (very good take) from ONeill and keeps running to the tryline 32-14.
  • This ref is ridiculous.. they keep using their dirty tactics on TPH, kid gets hammered with crushers and foul play and none of them have been called... a bit like dufty used to cop... and the ref does nothing.. now its erupting into a melee. 1 from each side to the bin on full time whistle. 32-14 win.

The big concerns out of the game today are really:

  • is Heidke injured again
  • Has Loko spat the dummy after missing out on Vegas? I get it if he has... or is he just injured?
  • How is Nick handling missing Vegas also (the only other non-injured top 30 player - all be it not a regular 1st grader), I think we have a lot of inbuilt patience from him as a dragons jr, but he must be smarting as the U19 origin 2nd rower who's now 21.5yrs of age.. done zero wrong... but keeps getting deprioritised. His 2 errors today were pretty ordinary, all be it the dogs kept pushing balls out in tackles... hes a big man he can wrap a ball up... wonder where his head is at also.

Thanks TR. So good that you spend the time to submit your report on the lower grade matches. Top marks to you.

I am looking forward to following the KOE Cup team this year. Willie Talau is gold as the coach. Would be nice if he could transition to coaching first grade in the future. I wouldn't mind Willie Peters as well.

gotta admit im starting to fall off the flanno train and wondering if there is any future path that doesnt just lead to Young.. who I think is actually a downgrade of a coach.. and one that would really set us back years... If we do change coach is there a way to actually get someone a bit more modern and open to some more exciting recruitment and selection decisions?

But ultimately id rather just win with Flanno and not go through all of that pain and carnage.. I just hope there is life in the old dog coach yet... and in the first few rounds of NRL.. I think we will see what we're dealing with... even if its not wins, is the squad actually working? I also feel like selections can change from Rd2 on wards.. I feel like Vegas is a bit of a special game he will double down on experience.

3 concussions wow.. I have kept looking for Lyric in the sea of outside backs that are hard to tell apart... that explains it... and yes Webster rly stood up today with all his fancier colleagues missing, sort of the job Jett Liu was doing last year.. hope he can stay healthy.. hes a very different beast to Hutchinson.. who is also impressive but in a totally different way..

Hope CST gets back soon, I had him pegged to be our next middle coming thru, maybe more because 2nd row is so chockas.. but not seen it consistently from him yet.

Why is no Loko a big concern? Is he pissed to not be on the plane and chose to sit it out? I don't blame him for being pissed. He's been treated with disrespect, IMO.

Gotta admit, I'm falling off that train as well. I can't make any sense with this thing regarding Nick T and especially LPT.

we can only speculate.. but its not a great look (to not show up) after being the 1 main first grader to miss out on vegas.. maybe they gave him the day off to rest his leg and lick his wounds.. but I still think him not being on the plane means something..

I think there are a lot on here that are expressing some concern on Mr Flanagan. We know that he can coach and yet the wonder remains at what level now? This year will be the one that we will be able to see if he has what it takes to coach a winning side for most games this year. Changing coaches is a pain in the butt. Everything goes back to the start and you have a rebuild to the new coach's needs and the cycle goes on and on. Fingers crossed that now that we have better depth we can hang on and win games that count.
