Dragons v Dogs Round 1

A lot of talk about lack of a running game from Atkinson. For me this was down to field position. Although we matched them for completed sets and kicked very well for position, more often than not they had tackles in our half and we were kicking from close to halfway (apart from the end when the game opened up a bit). I just don't think that we'll see our halves trying to run the ball from around our own 30 metre line. That just wouldn't have been the strategy. When Galvin looked dangerous it was because his forwards had put him close to our goal line so he was allowed to roam. We really need to reserve judgement on Atkinson until he gets some decent ball deep into opposition territory. Until then last tackle kicking was his only real option. I'm not going into the mad scramble for a field goal - far too much to unpack there.

Overall I thought we played very well within our squad limitations. We need more strike for sure but we all knew that. KK is part of that and Flanagan is talking about another 2 or 3 big players to come for 2027. Things will also look different when Reed plays but those comparing him to Galvin physically are way off the mark. Galvin is 193cm and has filled out a lot. No comparison. Reed will benefit from plenty of Cup football this season and hopefully he gets some NRL time towards the end of the season and then another pre-season into him before becoming the main man in 2027. Let's not bust these juniors because we're impatient for success.

I thought the Dogs targeted Tu with their kicks and physically tried to rough him up, especially Kikau with that awful deliberate high shot. But I think he passed the test.

Guler won't be used for runs. Do not expect to see any running stats of note from him this season. He has very obviously been told to put his body on the line in defence and that's what he's doing. It's about taking those hits to protect the others. They will give the ball to faster and better attacking forwards to run it.

I usually can't come on the forums after a loss - hurts too much and too much negativity for me. but I'm actually not feeling so bad after watching the huge effort on Sunday. And I genuinely believe we are a chance against Melbourne at the Gong.

Pathetic. Jack w'd have doubled those mts and his tackle count.

LOL ...

First thing lets actually be sensible about this ...

Kerr came on last 10 of the first half and started the 2nd ... in that time Atkins was just giving them posession after posession ... We didnt have many sets with the ball when Kerr was actually in a position to take it for a run.

Secondly, the grubiness of the dogs negated one of Kerr's strengths (play the ball speed) ... Unpenalised garbage that took more out of the equation.

Thirdly, he was there for a lot more carries but Cook didnt use him. So grumbling about the lack of carries needs to be considered in that context.

Fourthly, Kerr would have been on in the last 10-15 if we had the available sub that we wasted on Setu Tu, that would have given him more carries AND given his metres per carry were better than most of the pack that would have been useful.

Finally, JDB would have been in Ryan's spot on the team, i doubt he makes 90 metres and 53 tackles

Kerr absolutely can delivery more to the team than he did last night but 3 runs in a 20 minute period that we didnt have the ball and 20 odd tackles is not him being lazy, it is the context of the game.

But I think he passed the test.
With flying colors. Some of his takes under pressure were top shelf. Everything he does is at 100kph an hr such is his intensity.
been told to put his body on the line in defence and that's what he's doing.
Not yesterday he didnt. Third worse defender in the pack.
They will give the ball to faster and better attacking forwards to run it.
Who other than the Couchies and Stewart. We need him to do more than his share in attack if he is starting. I'll ask again. Why didnt Flanagan play Lawrie when he was on all team lists as being a bench man.

Someone said Guthos kick returns are ordinary. His defense is at times too. But I do like that he has knack for ball playing when he chimes in as receiver.

20 odd tackles
I read 17. Look Kerr under performed for us in his first stint, you admit he was under par yesterday and he was. Honestly he was not back then, now or will ever be an elite forward. Betting we are paying him peanuts which is what he is worth. Hope he proves me wrong going on an encouraging interview I read, but I doubt it. Is not in his DNA.

i think that an upgrade on Guler is the main thing we need and we get that next year. Guler's carries were really poor (combinatino of timing/effort etc) ...
Your top forward struggling to make 6m a carry is next level poor.

Kerr could have contributed more but that was jsut as much a function of the opportunities given to him than him taking the ball ...

Top forward, give me a break. Toby has that honor now Jack has left.
If so then why are we upgrading him pray tell. I liked what Guler offered in his first season, but he has dropped away since.

sorry my definition based solely on the bloke taking that first carry ... Agree he is shit.

Looking forward to seeing Toby/Ryan/Hamish playing off the back of a big decent middle in KK

Kyle is not an 8/10 but to invent some paranoid fantasy about why LKT didn't get on doesn't exactly help your futile attempts to appear sane and logical
You are right. A crazy conspiracy theory. It's not as if he is only in the team because his dad is coach or he was apparently recruited to be a bench utility/ hooker.

From watching the replay I wanna know how did Aitkin not see that head slam and elbow to the head of Suli by the grub hooker, then to double the error he penalises us for taking offence. That was a crucial call as play stayed in our end zone and even tho we hung tuff on that set they were given a scrum feed and scored, extending their lead.

Agree ... but what would have happened if Liddle was on the bench yesterday? Would he have played Feagai for Suli on the HIA and not used Lids?
Dunno have to ask Flanagan. For mine Liddle is our best rake and must start, but Cook came here as co captain so Lidds was undeservedly shoved down the pecking order to be his deputy. By playing favorites because he is one of his boys, he has messed round Liddle. Thankfully Lidds has been extended and should be back to start next season.

In my view, these are 3 players to build a team around. In 2 years I wouldn't be surprised if these are the only 3 who remain from yesterdays team. I thought Atkinson was good and he is still young but Kade Reed will force him out of halfback and he might have some competition from LKT and a few others coming though the grades for 5/8.

There are 6 on the bench but only allowed to use 4.

Very proud of the effort yesterday, unfortunately we didn’t get the 2 points and of course that’s disappointing but if they keep putting that effort in I can’t complain. We defended really well, if they keep that up for the season we will go well - atkins the grub just would not let us in at all, the bulldogs constantly gave a little push in the ruck which delays the play the ball by a second, massive difference in playing in the front foot vs back foot. He had to let the NRL golden child to win to keep their crowd figures up

Worst game think I have seen from Val. Definitely in defense, the times he left the line and found himself in no mans land, opening huge metres for the grubs. Then topped it off with a crap drop to win us the arm wrestle.
