Thanks for your thoughts. It’s a shame he hasn’t been given a crack in the forwards yet but we are pretty strong in the back row department at the moment. I hope Flanno doesn’t just forget about him moving forward, be a shame to lose him down the track. Bit of a conundrum moving forward

I don't thnk we loose him, i just believe if he was next in line for edge he would be left in that position.

Like Mat his versatility is a bonus not just for Cup but FG when injures hit like late last year.

He and Mat are great top 30 fillers on minimum wage, they basically cover every postion except for the 3 halfs

Match Notes (Jersey Flegg)

1st Half:

  • So similar to last week however Baldock is into 7 due to Hammoud's concussion, and we have a stacked pack with guys like CST, DMeafou, Treweek all of which could easily play NSW Cup.. and guys like Carmichael off the bench. We also have both wingers gone in Kirk/TRumble but honestly their replacements I think are possibly even better prospects in Kye Andrews & Demetrius Kilisimasi.
  • We almost score in the 6th minute, Eden Hodges the 6 has had some nice 5th tackle kicks rly putting the storm under pressure... also putting in some nice long kicks.. I've always liked his big boot.
  • 10minute off the back of a storm error we start on the halfway and after a couple of raids where we nearly got em... on the right Hodges to Borg (fullback) to Lyons (ctr), the second time we probed we got em with Lyon crashing over. 4-0.
  • Been a tough game, Storm have been asking question the whole half.. but their errors have enabled us to stay in it + our defence.. Kilisimasi still a bit green I think, played at a ball in the ingoal he had no need too.. and does something where he dips his head before big contact which is gonna get him knocked out at some pt.. but regardless we have kept them out.. and off the back of a strong set, Hodges again goes to the air, this time with a wide kick for his winger Kye Andrews who plucks it out of the air and beats 2 defenders to score a try.. kid is good in the air.. can play fullback and wing. 8-0.
  • Very next set some strong runs, Treweek again very dominant coming back to 21's.. DMeafou gets a late pass away to his fullback, Borg gets ti to Hodges in support and finally Plecas supporting that and runs away to score again 14-0.
  • 2mins before fulltime and I've never seen this.. the dummy-half picks the ball up and kicks it in 1 motion.. somehow on the full is caught by his centre who maybe was onside.. but such a weird try honestly.. 14-6.
  • But on the next set and 20seconds left in the half.. Langdon belts someone in the tackle forcing an error and we get 1 last attacking raid.. Hodges draws a few in to Baldock to Borg to Afu to Kilisami who is too quick scoring in the corner.. Treweek was the decoy in the play which definitely helped. 20-6 Half Time a good lead in a competitive game.
2nd Half:
  • Next try was the Storm, Kye Andrews had the ball and the shorter Storm player basically ripped it straight out as he caught it.. bugger 20-12.
  • Man Hodges puts up an attacking kick on the 5th on the storm line.. their wing not only catches it but shrugs off 2 of our defenders, gets a long inside ball to his fullback who flies through and beats 3 more... thankfully Kilisami is quick enough to get back and pressure him and its Hikila the prop of all ppl who gets back and makes the tackle .. unfortunately out of this Afu has been sinbinned I rly don't know why.. he was back on side.. I'm rly confused tbh.. and that's where the storm score.. the halfback bats a ball 2m forward everyone stops.. and the storm ctr picks it up and scores.. far out.. 20-28.
  • Game is getting really scrappy now.. heaps of errors from both sides.. but we get to attack their line again.. Hodges > Borg > Lyons again.. who tried to slip an outrageous ball a few sets ago and generated an error.. this time I think he gets lucky the flick comes out late and Andrews is there to pick it up and score.. 24-18.
  • After grinding our way down field again CST has thrown a ball behind Lyons and given away an intercept...their 6 runs 75m to score farm me.. 24-24.. missed conversions a real issue for us.. 12mins left.
  • Eden with a poor 5th tackle kick gives away the 7 tackle set.. but we 'just' manage to defend it.. and off the back of a penalty we get to attack.. 5th tackle a spread from left edge to right with Kilisami finishing it.. man oh man.. side like conversion and we finally kick it.. 30-24 up with 4mins to go.
  • We played well here.. big set.. force an error.. force an in-goal repeat it should be game over.. we get the ball back and go for a slick backline movement ffs into the hands of the storm winger who runs the length but thank f*** Borg puts in a big chase on the faster man and forces him into the corner.. conversion missed by about 1m on fulltime...and we get out of jail 30-28... way to turn what should have been a dominant win into a lottery.. noting that we did score 1 more try than them.
  • I need to point out that the storm were pretty good.. and rly 2 tries were pure AR$E and 2 were length of the field intercepts.. so 4 of the 5 were rubbish.. but whatever we are 2 from 2 in a grade we always struggle in.. so that's great news for the boys.. something positive.

One reason we have struggled in Flegg the last few years is that our best u21 players have been playing in higher grades. It really is the most artificial comp. We are often strengthened at the back end of the season when some SG Ball kids join the squad.

Cup way too good for Storm. Some nice moments for Sloan. Help to rebuild his confidence.
Been talking to a mate of mine. He and his work colleague are friends/mentors of Sloan. Sloan apparently was approached in Vegas by Gus who asked him how things are going at the Dragons and he gave his tuppence worth and Gus said he would be glad to offer him a 3 year deal on good money and for him to consider it which my mate said that Sloan would. Also has had feelers from Super League but not too happy leaving his grandma for too long going overseas. Sloan wants to remain a Dragon and he is putting in the hard work but he doesn't see Flanno/Anderson retaining him.

Match Notes (Knock on Effect Cup):

1st Half:

  • Couple of changes, O'Neill/LKT the halves with Reeds concussion, Nick to Ctr, Fale to LEFT wing that has to be significant for first grade (TPH right today), Hutchison starting lock with Webster to prop and Coutts into the starting 2nd row.
  • Fale had an epic first run.. bout 50m cutting them open..
  • Big charging run from NickyT into their 20m zone including a 360deg spin which was impressive.. and off the back LPT with a big charge and just reaches out and plonks it down.. in front thankfully for Sloan who is goalkicking again.... 6-0.
  • Holy sh*t, Sloan actually ran through and competed on a kick.. his presence forced a Storm error.. wonder if Talau has had some words with him over the off-season... and it leads to a try.. nice wide pass from Finau, O'Neill to LKT to Sloan who gets it away quickly to Buchanan who doesn't need his winger to score in the corner. 10-0.
  • We're punishing them atm with our pack.. and oh my god, Sloan has competed on another bomb.. what the.. even more he's caught it, and off his knees got a pass back to LKT to Coutts to O'Neill to score again! Goalkicking is once again killing us however.. 14-0.
  • Oh baby.. NickT destroys 3 tacklers once again (how is this guy not in 1st grade honestly) and gets a ball out to TPH who is nice and quick and lines up a kick to beat the fullback with Sloan trailing on the inside.. Sloan picks it up and scores... what am I watching.. nearly misses it from 10m out.. but slides it in.. converted 20-0.
  • I mean everyone is motivated today and we are dominating so they all look good.. but LPT is off the back fence all game so far... hope we don't start being silly with the ball as we are prone to do if we get a lead.
  • Got lucky here.. the consequences of NickT at ctr is moments like this.. they send a much faster fullback that burns him.. Sloan did the right thing to stay on his winger.. Nick unable to make the tackle but thankfully as he slipped off the bloke drops the ball as he slides over the line. 20-0.
  • LKT also looks like he's more pumped up this week... and trying to get more active.. possibly a rev up or possibly just cause Reed is out.. ran himself once, just has more energy.. hasn't led to any points yet but a good sign.
  • Given away a head high penalty and multiple repeat sets and its cost us.. they've managed to isolate TPH 1on1 with a rly big winger who is able to run thru the contact and get it down.. put his body there but wasn't gonna be able to stop him that close. 20-6 as he converts from the side-line.
  • But we get the ball back and do some damage ourselves... some nice runs in there, Buchanan and Fale have been good on the edge... O'Neill to LKT with a nice late ball to Coutts who is in a yawning gap... draws his man and just just gets it backwards to O'Neill who catches it basically behind him, and is able to get to the line 26-6.
  • 20 secs before half time, Sloan is taken exception to something in the tackle.. the storm player looks he's had a few swings to get him off which was totally outrageous.. and ofcourse the ref bins both of them.. moronic stuff but hard on Sloan imo. Our penalty but no goalkicker.. TPH has a crack at a goal with no other kickers.. kicks it legend 28-6 Half-Time.
2nd Half:
  • Nick has had a couple of moments where we probably could have scored but he is a 2nd rower playing in the centres...
  • Sloan's back from the bin.. he's sat there and watched TPH compete 1on1 with a massive storm outside back in his own in-goal while he was 2m away.. fark me. 28-10.
  • Man oh man.. storm strip us and TPH has missed a 1on1 tackle with said flying storm winger.. they go the length.. Sloan isn't able to stop the 2on1 that followed.. its again a reminder that TPH needs to be fullback really or nothing moving forward.. but taking contested bombs are always going to be the problem. 28-16.
  • TPH goes on to save a try in the next play which is nice for his confidence... the penalty comes soon after and we're able to go back on the attack.. well done O'Neill just sells the dummy and goes over himself near the posts... 32-16, we needed that try to arrest the momentum they had. FFS Sloan has had 4 kicks from the exact spot 10m from the posts.. and he's missed it again...
  • Looks like Quinn is in @ 5/8 atm, maybe LKT extended 1sts? Anyway Tonga with a nice big pass and Quinn, Sloan, Buchanan and Fale scores in the corner.. decent finish, didn't need a dive but had to beat a tackle.. 38-16. ok Sloan has kicked it from the touchline... 38-16 with maybe 13mins to go.
  • Bombed a couple of tries here, 1 was Sloan who's thrown an intercept of sorts but we defended it and another been called a forward pass from Buchanan to Fale in the corner.. it was on replay but looked fine live, they usually let those go..
  • Storm end up attacking our line again.. their 5/8 beats Coutts and Sloan is sitting right in front of him and doesn't get a hand on him.. doesn't even move to try.. 38-22 with 5mins to go.
  • We force an error and get 1 more attacking set.. O'Neill > Sloan > TPH, from 15m out the kid pins the ears back and with an epic dive somehow gets it down.. tbh I would like to see a replay of his leg but it was some effort.. I'm not sure any of our other wingers score that try. 42-22.. ffs 30secs left and we let them get all the way down to put pressure on with yet another bomb over TPH's head which the storm winger again just jumps over him and not even a competition.. damn it.. but 42-26 and we are 2from2 to start the season, good day so far!

Yes, Flanno has already told him to look elsewhere. He's still only young. Could become a good player. Just needs to set high standards for himself.

He's had enough chances, and when he should really be trying hard he lets himself down by looking and being disinterested. I'd like to see where Gus would put him.

Dragons should be putting their foot on the throat of the Storm, not letting them back into the game.
Infuriating Jd how after leading teams by say 10-15 pts we do not apply the foot on throat more, instead of the opposite. Happens in all grades and not only today but regularly. We lack the killer instinct, comes from too many years of loss after loss.
