Recruitment & Retention 2027

I might sound crazy, but look at how good Benji is doing at the tigers... perhaps Young is the answer?
When Flanagan started and a certain section of the fans were death-riding him before a ball had been kicked (in every post).... I pretty much had to put those guys on ignore... so its not for any of us to now assume Young will be a failure also... he has to get a chance, and interim is the safest time for it before he is locked in longterm.

However I feel like more than ever the attacking coaches, the coaches who read the game well and can adapt.. they are the future.. the run hard tackle hard kick to corner grind guys are not the answer in this new game we play... I assume Young is in the latter, but hope I am wrong.

The other thing however, is the playing group need to love whoever this person is.. we need a huge boost on the polls so to speak to recruit the 1 and 7 and possibly 1 or 2 others... plus retain the couchies, halangahu, lpt.. thats why im not sure young moves the needle.. and rumour is the players find him far too serious also.

but dont underestimate the value of one signing and the flow on from that ...
Api was the signing.. a leader + spine member still in his prime, it all came off the back of his penrith connection with Luai, May x 2, Turuva, Stains and im sure im forgetting a few, but real talent flowed off that first and then second signing... plus their nurseries were killing it and slot in as they went.

But the key in all that was Richo was it not? Same as Souths.. same as Penrith..

Note: Api was signed at a time where the market wasn't as ruthless as it is now.. we missed that boat... dogs got in too with JAC, Burton, Kikau etc.. we were too busy signing old coaches and old players and just sitting on our hands like we always do.. reacting to things instead of being proactive... doesnt work in a comp as elite as this.

The percieved issues aroung Young stem from relationships with non waspy cultures. If Young is given interim then you 100% need a SAC with excellent rapport with the islanders ... So a coaching team of Young/Talau would have to be put in and Talau would have to have a respected voice esp in selections.

You do that you might rescue pathways a little and put some brakes on players wanting out. But if team 1 were selected and Halangahu was not in there getting decent minutes you immediately start on the wrong foot. No point playing Su'a as an edge forward anymore, he has made his bed and as flano said we are not winning the comp. Luc/Jake as the edge forwards and when Egan is back all three playing decent minutes each week.

If we are signing Drinkwater then it is into this mess and he would know Young - that would be interesting.

Yes, always be pro-active and I would not like Dean Y to be the HC. I really hope that it is Talau. He knows most of the players, especially the young ones and who would do well in the first grade team. Richo is tried and true. Needs to be able to run the show though.
