Mixed feelings. Sign yet another veteran but him and Reed in the spine will pile on the points. So it's good but I just wonder how it will affect us with the cap.Drinkwater done deal - 3 year deal worth 900k a year.
Turning 29 in a few days, turning 30 shortly into his first season with us. The definition of a veteran.is 28 veteran?
Seems like a plan! I couldn't believe Flanno signed Gutho for 3 years at the stage of his career he is at but as a bench utility and back up hooker, he might be very valuable. Energy boost around the middle just as the enemy forwards and ours are tiring.Mixed feelings. Sign yet another veteran but him and Reed in the spine will pile on the points. I guess Cook won't be re-signed, Gutho the utility/hooker next year then Drinkwater becomes the backline utility in his 3rd year with Burton taking over as fullback.
Yes that is my concern as well - he is going to be 30 next year. I know we are "desperate" but he could be in for a slide in form over the next couple of years. Two years would have been better but I assume he wouldn't come for that.Turning 29 in a few days, turning 30 shortly into his first season with us. The definition of a veteran.
Its a start the guy is still quick off the mark , this is the next guy I would go hard for ........... AverilloI heard an NFL gm say when drafting if you make exceptions for players you end up with the a team full of exceptions
I find this to be the case signing players over 28 constantly, how often do NRL players that move elsewhere on big money still produce at a high level at 31/32 YO
While I don’t mind signing Drinkwater due to the lack of options on the market, I think if you continually sign older players it will bite us in the ass like it had with Gutho
Easily the best OB currently availableIts a start the guy is still quick off the mark , this is the next guy I would go hard for ........... Averillo
Used to play him.when he played for Bankstown sports, can’t believe he’s made it as far as he hasIts a start the guy is still quick off the mark , this is the next guy I would go hard for ........... Averillo
I flow between being super excited and super concerned about signing Drinkwater.. we aren't a front-running team, so he needs to show up when things are tough.. I think we really wanted him because we had Kyle/Atko so ineffective at creating points.. Drinkwater isnt just a running fullback like most of them.. hes a genuine playmaker.. you'd play him @6 even.. except then he has to do 20+ tackles..... hes prob best @1.I heard an NFL gm say when drafting if you make exceptions for players you end up with the a team full of exceptions

Thats the key.. we cannot afford to keep losing.. we get a reset this week, and if it doesnt go well, we will get 1 more reset when the 2027 head coach is announced.. but thats it.. we have to show that the style of footy we are playing is on the improve.. even if its another wooden spoon next year too.. we have to show things have turned, that we can win games.. perhaps Reed is a longtermer.. perhaps we lock in our young forwards.. give reasons for players to extend or sign with us... that positivity.I don't think we can afford to have another horrible losing season next year & we have no one that will be 1st grade quality for fullback, so the signing is a positive imo. Who else was a fullback option for next year? I'd push to get him this year if we could, unsure the type of players NQ need. Maybe someone in the fwd pack?

I would have thrown 900k-1mil @Koula, I think he is better than Tommy and prob plays origin this year or close too... I think thats the guy Flanno wanted too.. but the gamble is Koula is more of a runner rather than a playmaker.. so it was a gamble.. everything ofcourse is a gamble.
But we do need a 1 and a 7 for next year.. like we need them.. the only qn is what level of 7 do we go after i.e. how ready is Reed, how man rounds can he play?
We're in a bit of a happy bubble this week, but the reality is we still havent won a game in 8mths.. a lot still needs to happen to be sure we're on the way out.. but atleast Flanno is gone.. sounds like he pretty much resigned, we werent going to axe him this week... we were just going to keep doing the same thing.
