2026 pre-season

Ryan

SGI NSW Cup
We said that last year as well but they have gone a few steps beyond that as well. We need to hit the ground running from game 1 in Vegas, that will set the tone for the rest of the year. I really dont want to hear any excuses of why we lost several games by less than 6 points, and being gassed is one of them. Line speed and kicking, that has to be the focus for this year.
Would make us a 12 point better team to have a good, long kicker.

Flanno suggested he kicks about the same as Kyle but I think it's actually much better.
If what Flanno says is right in that Atkinson kicks about the same as Kyle, then we are in trouble. I hope your thinking is right Chris and that "much better" equates to "miles better" - distance - get it? Height and length.

He said Atkinson and Kyle both have good kicking games. I believe/hope it was just his "blind spot" again. In fact, Atkinsons kicking is much better.

The lads look very lean and happy

The art of kicking is just that an art, people confuse a long kicking game as the best type of kicking game . In my view it is a string to the bow of variations to your kicking game.

That is the key to a good kicking game, variations. A long kick 40m plus to get you out of trouble, a short kicking game 1 - 10m, a chip kicking, the up and under high kick again 40m min with hang time.

Well said, Jodragon40. I’ll be thinking of a kicking game less as a single note and more as a full chord from now on.

Cheers George Sancti George Sancti it was something that I learnt from my mentor. What he did was identify those players with kicking abilities.

Then did a number of different drills including all I have mentioned and further kicking with and against a breeze at training.

He was not looking for our longest kicker but the player who had the best control of his kicking and also had variations in his kicking game.

Worked well for us

I expect Ryan to be in our 17 for our first game in Vegas.

I dont at all ...

More likely to see Lawrie there than Ryan ...

Guler/Cook/Toby
Sua/Luc
Stewart

Liddle/Lawrie/Kerr/Sele

Sele will be there to cover 13 for stewart
Kerr there obviously for impact middle ..

The last bench spot is the Lawrie one .. i think he will surprise in the off season and take that final spot

Flano esp overseas will go for our most experienced pack

I think Lawrie is now well down the pecking order when it comes to middle forwards. I think he's behind every other forward in the top 30.

If I was with you in person, I would bet you even money that Ryan Couchman will be in the 19 over Lawrie, but if neither were to be in the 19 the bet would be neither has to pay. I can't see Lawrie being picked in our 19, unless injuries to others opening the door for him. I think the other 9 you picked will be there, with either Pasifiki Tonga or Couchman being there instead of Lawrie. Or Pasifiki Tonga and Ryan Couchman could even both be there with no Sele, which is what I would probably do, if I was in Flanno's position I would be picking. (I just remembered there will now be 6 on the bench)

8 Guler
9 Liddle
10 T Couchman
11 Leilua
12 Su'a
13 Stewart

14 Cook
15 Pasifiki Tonga
16 R Couchman
17 Kerr
18 Feagai
19 Halangahu

Cook could cover an injury to the halves. Feagai could cover an injury to an outside back. I would rather Halangahu and Couchman over Sele and Lawrie. I think Sele will be in the 19, but I don't think Lawrie will be. Just remember we have been trying to offload Lawrie for years. Flanno doesn't see him as part of our future, while he does see Couchman and Halangahu as part of our future and probably rates them higher than Lawrie. as I do too.

has the bench size of 6 been ratified?
If so given you can still only use 4 these will be specialists not utilities ...
You would expect LKT there to cover 6/7 and someone like Feagai or even CT (if Fale/Tu are wing) to cover the 3/4 line.

Three forwards a hooker a half and an outside back is probably the makeup you see there.

I think you're right though Cook can play in the halves, can't he? Might go with a hooker, 4 forwards, an outside back.
