Dragons v Dogs Round 1

I have to say, that refs call saying it was a strip has to be one of the worst calls ever. As Flanno said, it was a loose carry any day of the week. If we had a challenge up our sleeve, I am certain the bunker would have deemed it a loose carry. It has been said many times over many years now, but we seem to not get the "rub of the green" in so many instances. It has also been said the clubs who are less successful often don't the the "rub of the green". Just imagine if a grand final was decided with a decision like that. I know the challenge was brought in after Canberra had a call go against them in the grand final against Easts several years ago.

I mean, sure but first and foremost don't we need a half or 5/8 with some decent ball skills? It's not as if Thurston was the biggest, fastest with the best step and etc half or 5/8.
As we cant lure a elite play maker here, we seem to always put the wrong guy in this vital position, instead of a creator with vision.
WE sure as hell do. I saw one such #7 in a Saints U18 Development trial match. As no nongs bothered to supply a team list and there was no commentary, I had no idea who he was. That is so irritating. It may be Xavier Farr chosen in Matts original squad but missed out to a Shonkies import. Hopefully he'll be in Saints Ball next season. Reckon I could recognise him.

To highlight how hard that game was for us to win ...

One yardage penalty (the Crichton high shot) which was so deep in a corner we grabbed maybe 8m max from it.
Three set restarts all in the first 15 minutes of the game.

One penalty and no restarts for the entire second half (the penalty for passing to a forward still coming back onside).
That penalty Atkins would have been told by assistant refs to blow as well .. He gave us nothing.

2 penalties in possession for being what a little bit firey? FFS.. gotta be something serious for a ref to be giving penalties like that..

Again though, plenty of chance to win the game, not sure what it is about our fieldgoal setup but we dont do it well.. we know Atkinson can shoot them.. im a bit annoyed with Vals attempts as he appeared injured and wasnt even getting the distance..

I remember Humphries fieldgoal against us last year, the dude just snapped it without any winding up or anything.. annoyed me no end how easy he made it look.

Need real, lasting punishment. Like not one week in reserve grade but suspended for a month and then under review in reserve grade for another month and only back in first grade if the 4 weeks in reserve grade were good.

I agree Frank with your - "If we had a challenge up our sleeve, I am certain the bunker would have deemed it a loose carry".

Last year we used our challenges early in several games and lost and therefore we had no chance then to challenge other decisions by the ref later in the game. I prefer that unless the players/captain are 100% sure of not being in agreement with the refs decision then let it go and hope that they can keep things intact (if the decision meant handing the ball to the opposition in a good attacking position). I didn't watch the first half as I was out with the missus so I don't know when we made the challenge in the game on Sunday night.

I know by me saying that unless the players/captain are 100% sure then don't make the challenge, I mean if there is any hesitation whatsoever, then don't challenge.

It would have been befitting if the game had ended in a draw.

Anyway, all the water has passed under the bridge now, so case closed.

When was the last time the Red V put on such a brutal defensive display, with our middle and goal line like impregnable brick walls. The only time the grubs saw space was when they went wide. I say the credit must go to Dean Young who cops so much undeserved flack on here.
A couple of comments I want to make on your post RVH, firstly as you mentioned "brutal", can our boys keep that up all year? And secondly will our brutal defense last if we keep losing by the odd point. Agree kudos to DY for that effort but they were injury free and pumped up for Vegas, will they be flat in the next RD, great effort but I'd like to see it again next game, that's where the bar has been set.

As was said after the game Rev, Bulldogs trained for that GP obviously we didn't.

St George are going to write to the NRL over the referring. I agree with that ! The referee was so bad I would almost say the game was rigged. Plus,, to rub salt into the wound, not even citing Crichton for the high shot, which was pretty solid contact. They must be kidding !
And what we will get back is "yep sorry the ref f$#ked up" V'landy's already set that agenda when he was questioned about it after the game.

So how can V’Landy be head of the NRL AND racing NSW. Surely you cannot do both jobs ?
Being the "head" of different Organisations takes place significantly. If V'Landys is doing a good job in both, then he maintains his high position in the Orgs he is involved with.

Reasons for Multiple Top Positions
  • Broadening Perspective: Serving on multiple boards allows directors to gain diverse perspectives across industries, which can improve their ability to navigate complex challenges.
  • Networking and Experience: Board members often meet through conferences, consulting, or previous roles, leading to nominations for other positions.

  • Expertise in Demand: Highly skilled individuals are often sought after to bring specific expertise (e.g., in AI, governance, or restructuring) to multiple companies, particularly to aid smaller companies looking to scale.
Good luck to him. I only wish he helps the Dragons in some way - seeing that he has been a Steelers fan but I suppose he can't be seen showing any favouritism.

St George Illawarra’s anger towards Grant Atkins over some controversial calls in their loss to the Bulldogs hasn’t impacted his standing, with the under-pressure referee set to be retained for Round 2.

It is understood Atkins’ performance was given approval by the NRL and he will be back to referee in the top grade next week.

Just to repeat myself, since the JDB farce and the meek acceptance of the NRLs diktats from our head office, we have become the whipping boys of the competition. Or at least when he was found not guilty the club should've sued the NRL for all its worth.

If Rorters teed off on a ref for good reason, there would be action.

Apparently other refs are privately saying the calls were 50-50. The last one more was more like 80-20 against. As if that ref or any other would rule against the Rorters or Broncos or Storm for that in gold point. They wouldn't. But lets be liberal and say, "yeah, they were 50-50". So the 50-50 calls went against us 5-0!!!???
