You know sometimes just sometimes being likeable is not a good thing being respected is a far more better quality for a coach to have.

So based on likes on social media Young gets the gig. I say wow just wow. In my day you had to have a resume which included experience and success.

You had to tell management how you could and would improve the club, the team, the players. You basically had to sell yourself.

I wish social media was around when I was coaching I would have had a real shot at coaching 1sts. I was liked a lot. Seriously
It is hard not to respect Dean Young.

If the players love him that means they respect him and won’t question what’s asked of them, they will do it for him. Same thing mate. If players are wishy washy with a coach= no respect, and like pulling teeth

My issue is not personal against Young its based on facts and history. So in the last 36 years we have had 4 previous players who became our head coach.

Craig Young- 41% win record,
Nathan Brown - 53% win record made the semis 4 times in his 6 seasons by far our most successful
Paul McGregor - 46% win record made semis twice
I'll throw in Shane Flanagan- 34.5% win record
Currently Dean Young - 25% win record.

There is an old saying , "Those that fail to learn from history, are doomed to repeat it." (Winston Churchill ).

I hope history doesn't continue to repeat itself. If it does I hope we can rewrite history.

History lesson over, time for a bottle of rosso vino.
My problem with Dean Young becoming coach isn't the fact he's an old boy and for one reason or another, they have proven abysmal as head coaches. This will always be true until, it isn't. I remember when we couldn't beat Canberra until....... we did. The only thing I care about is frankly speaking, as far as I can see, he has proven to be a poor coach. Interim head coach or assistant.

My view is that this should preclude him talking the head coach position for now.

Agree 100%. And the other issue will be if he proves to the world that he simply can't coach, his old man and his old mans mates holding positions of influence at the club will make it very difficult to sack him. Conversely, they may also be influential getting his contract(s) extended when not warranted, which as we know , has happened in the past with other "favourite sons" at the club.

Does it? Peer pressure could also be playing its part we really don't know. Selecting our next coach based on the number of likes he gets on social media, to me, is ludicrous.

Look if Young can have a more successful season from now on than we all expected then I would say he would be entitled to the opportunity to become head coach.

But not based on 1 game and 1 win it has to be a consistent improvement in both the team and individual performances over the rest of this season.

To me Manly are talking a big risk on their new head coach, yes he has been initially successful because of his new structures and being able to get the best out of his squad. Next season when other teams become more accustomed to Manly's structures then that will tell the real tale.

I hope he proves me wrong and becomes a great coach , but this has been my fear for along time and know it's coming ....... 1 win and a lot of people forget he has been around and part of the coaching for a while ....... Yes I like that he isn't scared to play the younger blokes ( something Flanno was scared to do only for injuries forced his hand ) Comes back to this will he be influenced by who is at the club ? Anyway time will tell .......

You just watch the outcry if he gets the job and is no better than any of our previous coaches.

Fans being fans will come out and suggest he may have been given the job based on internal influences such as his Dad, the word Nepotism will again rear its ugly head. Can we afford that bad publicity again?

NO! But going from reports the players love him and they have a lot of respect for him. If appointed, he cannot show any favouritism nor any of the Board or father show that of Deano as well. We cannot afford to disregard any other coaches who would be better than Deano and if Deano is selected will we get to know who were the other candidates?

Our poll, which does not have any bearing on the outcome, shows that both Deano and Carr have a paltry 2.1% of the votes. Do we see anything that the Club doesn't? Will Watsford ultimately let us know the reasons why a particular applicant was appointed to the head coach position and why the others missed out? We need to know why so that we can judge the club's level of standards that they have set.

This is make or break for the future of the club as far as I am concerned. Failure again will be catastrophic in my opinion.

Well we can scratch Brad Arthur from the poll as he has re-signed with the Leeds Rhinos until the end of 2028.
I'm not saying that the Club didn't consider him but there was nothing said that he was sought by the Dragons for him to apply.
Looks like all systems are a go for Deano to get the job.
I don't think that the club has gone too far searching for the best when they probably think that Deano is that best.

I heard somewhere that Drinkwater was looking forward to Deano coaching him ........ So if he has signed because of that he will be the coach ....... Not a big fan and didn't think they would go that way again after all the disappointment of previous ex players ........ Anyway let's see how it pans out .......

"The St George Illawarra Dragons' next long-term head coach will be stripped of absolute control over player signings and retentions. Club powerbrokers confirmed at a recent members' forum that future recruitment will be a collaborative effort, aimed at preventing the roster mistakes that have plagued the club.
Instead of giving the head coach exclusive veto power over the roster, the Dragons are restructuring their football operations to rely more heavily on the recruitment committee, management, and a dedicated list manager.
The club's hierarchy, including Chairman Andrew Lancaster and CEO Tim Watsford, outlined this strategy to nearly 100 members. The decision was made to ensure long-term, sustainable roster management and avoid the pitfalls of handing absolute control to a single coach."

This is what I have read - can anyone who attended the members' forum confirm this?
