2025 Season - The season that was

I wonder if the total silence regarding even possible Dragons signing targets is a good thing or a bad thing. Are Flanno and DA satisfied with who is already contracted and the young players coming through? Are they keeping negotiations secret? Or can't they get past square 1?
They have gotten off first base Chris and I am batting, sorry betting, that there is something happening or will happen this year - I don't know when but we still have 4 months left in 2025 and I think that DA has finished his exhaustive review of all of the players from top grade to lower grades in collaboration with all of the coaches, the positions needing greater improvement and the players that would meet the needs have been identified (we know a marquee half and props and I feel a fast winger).

They already have signed Josh Kerr, whoopee! They failed with Adam Doueihi. So who is next? Wait around and you will find out!

Its been another season of disappointment again, no matter how anyone wants to make this look, its been 15 years since a look at a premiership and 7 years since we made the finals. It sucks now that we may even finish the season with 2 more thrashings which could end up 3 in a row, definitely in the bottom 4 with less wins than last year. The only saving grace is KOE in finals representing the only Dragons team, makes up a little for no teams in anything for the last few years, embarrassing. Once again I'll be cheering for some other team and probably taking a greater interest in the AFL, how sad. With both men's and women's teams finishing nowhere near where they have to be, the club needs a good long hard look at itself, no doubt we'll get to hear about the review of the football department and all the excuses to follow. We may as well all come to the realisation that without something major happening, the once mighty Dragons are an also ran club, very sad and highly embarrassing.
Once again I look forward to hearing about next year and how we all ran up some hill, and the hardest preseason ever, blah blah. at least Flanno did apologise to the fans this year after some horrific performances, but personally if I have to endure another year where on a very proud day (ANZAC DAY) we get absolutely smashed, that we be it for me, 2 years in a row was disgusting enough. So yeah as the thread goes (the season that was) well we can finish off by saying "forgetable".

From my personal experience momentum is a really important factor coming into the tail end of a long season. Another big issue is how physically and mentally well off your team is, injuries and suspensions can cruel your season.

With those issues in mind do not be surprised if the Panthers make another GF.
I wouldn't rule out Panthers making the GF because other than Melbourne no team stands out. I don't really care but I guess I hope Canberra wins. They don't really compete with St George for juniors or sponsorship money even though I guess their catchment area finishes at our southern border. I just think the way Melbourne have beaten high quality teams without their Dally M halfback recently is very impressive.

Blooded a lot of young players who are going to be that much better next year. Hired Daniel Anderson to get the salary cap and recruitment in order. Those are positives. Along with the recent defeated of near full strength Sharks and Raiders.

yeah agree with you Edward that they may be positives, but if thats the benchmark for another year to beat those 2 teams, then well and good, but this club needs to stop coming up with bullshit excuses and start to get our illustrious owners to spend up big with what is required, a shakeup of our crappy board wouldn't go astray either. I think with a couple of weeks to go after a dismal season wouldn't be the time to ask any Dragons fan how they feel or how bright the future looks. I for one heard it all before with Amone , Sulivan and Sloan on the horizon, the golden children and yet here we are. Yes having the juniors perform for a full year with some progression will be when my belief will start to return, until that happens its just a pipe dream, yes seen and heard it all before.

Analysis = true

I'm still stunned they didn't have enough money to make JDB and offer had enough to recruit Josh Kerr.

But I believe DA, a proven salary cap manager and recruitment specialist is a big step forward.

Agree with you Justa. We were never going to finish the second half of the comp in great fashion even though we beat the Raiders and Sharks in succession a few weeks back. When we lost Holmes, Suli, Couchman brothers, Egan, Stewart etc we more or less have had to battle on with so many reserves which was good for their experience but just not really up to the rise in the level of competition of first grade teams.

Each ended year, which we are nearing, we have been left very deflated for want of a better word. What was thought to be a good year coming up when we had the trials with the new players etc has now fizzled out to what looks like a worse position than last year as far as the ladder is concerned.

I really hope that we secure several better players for next year and that our coaching staff can get the side to do what is needed to win games. Same old story each year unfortunately and is forgettable.

An also run club is hard for me to digest but in reality we have been disgusting the past decade or less. But long live the Dragons.

Very well put Dave, we have to accept who we are and what we have become, any resemblance of years gone past or the good old days is just disheartening and leads to disappointment. I really hope that people who are able to can change things around, but yes indeed, long live the Dragons !!

Thanks Justa. Our glory days are fading into oblivion and what we should now focus on is not the past, which will never be bettered, but to look forward always to the future. We do have many young chargers coming through the pathways and development process and the players in the lower grades will blossom as time allows. Our nursery is the one key element in our go to success programme.

We nurture the young ones, the best of of course, and we will end up with a few marquees one day in the not too distant future. This is what I am predicting and then we will leave the past in the past.

Well my 2c worth, and I disagree with your comments about the past. The past creates history, history creates lessons.

History causes you to look ahead. Someone once wisely said that what we learn from history is that no one learns from history. Let us do more than remember our history – let us learn from it.

What made us once the most feared football club in the competition and how we can reach those dizzying heights again.

The history of any sporting organisation is extremely important and should never be forgotten. History is about us and how we got here.

It's also important to look at how we've changed for better and worse, and having something to reflect on so we don't repeat the errors from our history.

You can't connect the dots looking forward you can only connect them looking backwards.

I love history especially ours.

Remembering history is fine, trying to match it again is a problem, especially ours. But I get your point.

I love our history too Jo don't get me wrong. We know what those great players that we had during those straight 11 premiership wins did. That will not be forgotten and yes we can learn from history and how those premierships were won without tackle counts and salary cap constraints and when the players were totally loyal to the club and every year from 1956 for 11 years because their aim was to win premierships and not in it for the paltry fee that they were paid.

The Dragons we know, managed to win a couple of grand finals in the late 1970's as a separate entity until it merged with the Steelers. As a joint venture club we won the grand final in 2010 ushering in a different kind of history for the Dragons.

With the salary cap constraints, which were introduced since the inception of the NRL in 1998, every club was seen to be on equal footing insofar as recruiting, re-signing and retrenching players to fit into the allocated cap which from 1998 was $3.25 million per year to in 2025 an amount of $12.3 million. More rules and so much change that to apply what we had in years gone by to now would not be possible.

The principles of winning consistently like we did in the glory days cannot be applied to today's principles in my opinion. However, I suppose we can learn a lot from what winning meant to those former grand finalists (not many if any still here on Earth).

I have been a person who constantly reflects back over time on many issues. I don't know if other older folk on this Forum do the same. My shrink is trying to get me to look ahead and not in the past - as part of cognitive behaviour processing. That is why I have said that we should focus on the future Jo but you have strong reasons to not forget the past because of our great history and that is fine and good thinking.

Nobody is going to ever emulate what we did, ever. The game has changed so much, salary caps etc but we should never forget our achievements. Forgetting positive achievements usually direct your energy into our negative achievements and that is never a good thing.

Sorry, did not want to start another thread. Just watching the Warriors v Eels game tonight. I can now see why Ryles didn't want Gutherson. The Eels fullback, Iongi has speed to burn in scoring a couple of tries.

Whilst I’m hopeful Dragons Chris that DA can conjure up a marquee signing (or two) for 2026, I believe his main focus is on 2027 and beyond. The strong clubs seem to have a conveyer belt which delivers talented players required for each season in the positions which need filling. However, the work required to identify and acquire many of these players likely occurred two or three years earlier. Coach Flanno’s focus needs to be on bringing the best out of the players he has at his disposal. DA, and his assistants, need to ensure Coach Flanna has top quality resources at his disposal.

I thought the CEO or Anderson himself said his focus is on recruiting for 2027. I might be wrong.
