I mean Souths reserve grade are playing the shield tonight, and their flegg is playing our flegg team at the same time.. so like I dunno who we are playing against exactly in this trial, nonetheless:

Match Notes:
  • First try was TPH darting thru a gap and almost going himself.. but off the back Kade Reed puts in a kick out wide to find NickyT who falls over.. Reed kicks from out side.. 6-0.
  • 2nd try was an insane (I think very risky) pass from ONeill across 2 souths players into the hands of Hutchinson who steps thru the line and gets a flick ball behind his back to Finau for a try.. hollyyy sh**. 12-0.
  • 3rd try was just the halves shovelling it onto a short ball for Halangahu to carry a few over. 18-0.
  • 2nd half 24. took over from Finau at hooker.. dunno who he is.
  • 4th try is another nice pass from reed to oneill with a cut out pass to the winger (im pretty sure its Hammoud its just that hes not a winger..) who spins out of the tackle and scores.. reed converts again 24-0.
  • 5th try was Coutts just moving thru traffic and holdind players off and eventually crashing over.. hes obviously a very skillful unit. 28-0.
  • Souths finally got one late with a very late offload... 28-6 (final score).
Nothing particular to report.. class mismatch so u know.. but nice to see some of the combinations we will see in a few weeks time... nice to see guys like Reed & Heidke at this level also finding their way.. Reed and ONeill combined well.. Hutcho was awesome... so glad we managed to keep him patient while the bigger names moved up a grade... definitely going to be interesting to see how they fit the guys into the squad for Round 1.

Match Notes (Jersey Flegg Trial v Dogs)
  • was 0-12 before the coverage started working.. dogs look very fit and fast and really drained our energy.. took us a while to get into the contest.
  • Kilisimasi the winger I mentioned last week as being the first guy to go vertical for a putdown that I think I've seen in our colours.. was playing right ctr instead, didn't look like he'd done any passing before so I don't think its his natural spot. Just updating this.. he did go on later in the game to put his winger away in the corner.. pretty conventional pass but he still made it... and Kye did get the ball down while going vertically, so perhaps I need to take it all back.. I like Kye Andrews.. I feel like he's a flexible outside back that has plenty of skill.
  • Borg has rly bulked up over the off-season, very tall too for a fullback, sort of the forgotten man came thru a strong steelers SG squad with Reed, LKT etc... but not rly seen in Flegg too often... he can definitely play footy, but at this stage I just think you'd need to be braining it to keep jumping up the grades.. but will keep an eye on him.
  • Joey Touma while a live wire, all sorts of rando errors.. bit like a smaller Saifiti..
  • Tomo looked sharp when he had opportunity late in the game.. could just be that he's fresher.. but keen to keep an eye on him, was a bit of a let down in U19's previously.
  • Carmichael again as strong early.. the early defence knocked him around though, hands on knees after 9mins.
  • Not too much rly to add tbh, we scored a few late tries to make the score respectable.. but dogs were ultimately a bit faster and fitter than us.. some fringe players had some moments but noone had a barnstormer.. very much a trial. Final score 16-26.
