2026 NSW Cup & Jersey Flegg

Toby Rumble ahead of Lyric CT, give me a break. Nick Quinn was given measly mins in the trial, so how is he supposed to impress Talau. It was Flanagan evidently who wanted Quinn to return.
Seems to be a fair bit faster than Lyric and probably bigger as well.

Intersting that Hajw Ty David and Lyhkan have been named in Cup but not Mat, maybe 18th man will play Cup
What's the story with young Nick T Mug Fan Mug Fan is it because we are lacking genuine centres coming through and we have an excess of youngsters now playing in his favoured position that someone has decided centres might be his go?

Is there a more reliable team in the club than the NSW cup side?

Felt it last year and it’s continued into round 1, they just feel so hard to beat. The defence is superb. No silly tries conceded but more like intercepts/deflected kicks or crazy individual brilliance etc. that are the only real way sides can score against them

Biggest Factor is it’s probably the best side on paper in cup + should improve with a crop of young mainstays like Buchanan/Halangahu a year older + a star young 7 to lead them around

Barring mass injuries if they don’t make a deep run into the finals it’s a disappointing result

Wonder if the coach has anything to do with it :)

We missed glover last game but that was because Reed was taken out and O’Neill is not as good as glover

The pack looks good - worry on the outside backs but that’s to be expected
Sloan isn’t Ramsey either

Ramsey was a bit of a cheat code (particularly with his weight loss his acceleration was insane).. I do wonder whether TPH could grow into that player though... its why Im not sure about retaining Sloan in reserves.. he literally is the chink in that defensive wall.. but had a good game in rd1 to be fair.. but i doubt coach Talau can drop Sloan.. I assume he is still our first grade cover..

And while Reed is out, id seriously consider dropping in another winger or someone who can goalkick.. I mean hopefully its just 1 week hes out.. but who knows.. we cant be having guys missing from in front.

Just on our NSW Cup coach (and genuinely not meaning to start any debates about flanno), but how close is Willie Talau to a possible first grade coaching gig do you guys think? Would he actually want to apply in the next 1, 2 or 3 years coming, or would he want to go away and do his tour of duty as an assistant at some other clubs, or head coach in the super league?

Hadn't really considered him before.. but his pathway wouldn't be too different to Demetriou would it? JD had I think a few years in the super league but just 1 year in NSW Cup and I don't think he had any of the lower grade stuff.. I don't think..

I do not think he is close to a first grade gig. That is good news for us. He is a fantastic development coach.

It's great for first grade, too. We really do have better depth (in most positions) than many clubs. Also, winning mentality builds good habits, and when players who are used to winning in Cup come up to firsts to cover injuries, they will be confident (and thus play better).

Agree about the young mainstays being a year older. I would throw guys like Webster and Hutchinson into that boat. These 2 will play every game (Halangahu, Buchanan, etc. might miss games playing for firsts or as 18,19th man). I think these two have both gone up a level this year. You don't usually win NSW Cup because of the first graders in your Cup team (but they do help), rather it's guys like Glover, Muhlheisen, etc. who are not in the palns for first grade but are very solid at this level and provide the stability and glue that NSW Cup teams usually lack. (Cup and Flegg are the least stable grades).

You just have to look at his results on the park. Being a ressies coach is actually a tough gig because of player turnover .

You have to manage the team consisting of young men about to play against seasoned men and those seasoned men who have tasted 1sts but are no longer considered capable enough to continue to play 1sts.

Its not easy especially handling those rising stars of your club that so much time, effort and money has been spent on them.

Then you have to deal with internal and external influences and noise. Talau is in my personal opinion good enough for a 1sts grade assistant coaching position now.

Yes, he is good enough. In fact, I'm pretty sure he already does help with 1sts. I think he is NSW Cup coach/assistant to 1sts. He has done a tremendous job with Flegg, Ball, and now Cup.

Well unless the systems have changed from my day the 1sts coach would have a weekly meeting with a number of people including his ressies coach and assistant coaches.

I think these days the Cup squad only gets a session a week to train as a team and work on their game. The rest of their training is in the service of getting first grade ready.
