SGI NSW Cup
Match Report (NSW Cup):
  • Had to watch this on replay.... I was super excited to finally see TPH get a game at fullback (with Sloan in 1sts), but a lot of forwards missing from the squad due to 1st grade injuries.. NickT also seems to have dropped out.
  • Haven't watch us play the bears in ages (storm feeder club), Jake Toby their #1 always scares the bejesus out of me.. as much as Faalago, seems far too good for this level... always wondered if he could have been a 1st grade fullback for us...
Key Moments:
  • 4min: Bears hooker with a lovely dummy and change of direction set up an easy 2on1 against Fale (who is on the wing again), nrly got him but he reaches out and scores.. 0-6.
  • 12min: Some good hit-ups from Webster and Hutcho got us on the front foot and Reed to Quinn to Fale on left wing who makes the break and maybe could have went himself but passes back inside to Feagai for a try 4-6.
  • 16min: Blatant hip drop on TPH not even penalised ffs.
  • 19min - Bears too good with an attacking raid, was after 3x6-agains called on us in the same set.. 4-12.
  • 26min - Bears are too strong fast and skilful for us today.. were hanging on for dear life.. eventually 1on1 Quinn is unable to stop his man close to the line 4-18.
  • 31min - Campbell Lyon looks to have dislocated his shoulder in a relatively normal tackle.. I did notice previously the defender almost had Lyons shoulder in a jiujitsu arm bar.. probably a coincidence...
  • 33min - Ok after a few dud kicks... Reed hits a 40-20.. a few centimetres from going out on the full.. but a big play cause we were struggling.. Reed then with a short ball to his 2nd rower in CST who is on from the bench.. 10-18 (HALF TIME).
  • 41min - Flick from the halfback on the ground but the tackler had fallen off grrr.. Toby tears us apart.. but hes been toying with us all game.. though hes not the only one 10-24.
  • 51min - Fale at right ctr now cuts them open and picks up Reed.. who looked like he would score himself but sadly tackled and we waste the opportunity.
  • 53min - TPH breaks a few tackles and gets Feagai in the clear but hes easily rounded up from behind... again unable to capitalise..
  • 54min - Quinn geta repeat set but the bears catch their short dropout without anyone contesting.. waste of all that good momentum..
  • 62mins - TPH nearly zigzags across the try-line, and from that quick play the ball Reed has plenty of time and space and selects CST who easily barges over 14-24.
  • 66min - Unfortunately we make an error and invite the Bear back.. another 6-again and the massive bears winger out-wrestles Toby to get it down.. 14-30.
  • 80min - Reed attacking bomb on their line.. TPH catches it but is held up.. game over.. disappointing day for sure.. seems a bit of a mis match I suspect with the forward pack, but their spine was brutal also. 14-32.
Some specific notes on players:
  • Reed struggled a bit early kicking in the strong wind.. and a grubber that was far too deep etc.. but he got better as the game went on and created most of our points.... hopefully a good learning experience.. also first time without a dominant pack. These games I am sure will be good for his development.. he has a lot of things to learn ahead of first grade.
  • Lawson been rly average sadly.. Feagai has had moments though am looking forward to getting Buchanan or Heidke back at some point.
  • TPH was solid under all the high balls.. he created in attack.. would like to see him with a stronger forward pack though it was a tough afternoon.. he does genuinely get hit high, crushered, hip-dropped, rag-dolled, today a prop picked him up and threw him down then jumped on him connecting with his head.. no penalty.. he is essentially using his body to get penalties I'm not sure how long he can keep doing that.. it would be a lot better in 1st grade where they will call a lot more of the foul play on him.. the refs done give a sh*t at this level.
  • CST I think tried to pick up some of the slack left by the missing forwards.. 2 tries was excellent.. couple of errors though was unfortunate also.

SGI NSW Cup
Match Report (Jersey Flegg - U21's):
  • Another one on report, just a few key highlights... noting this game was in Fiji, I saw us play a game here last year where the Silktails recorded there first ever win (of course it was against us), snapping a field goal with 4mins to go.. they were big strong lads and I have no doubt it would be confronting and painful for a young dragons side.
  • This is mostly the same squad as previously, maybe a couple are up a grade due to injuries.. CST and DMeafou missing for example.. but they rly should be playing cup.
Key Moments:
  • 5min - Lovely fast long ball from Hammoud to Hodges who steps back to beat his defender and gets an easy pass away to Langdon to score first 6-0.
  • 14min - This set Fiji were smashing us into oblivion. stuck in our own 20.. Hammoud swung around and I thought it was a clever little ball inside but I was wrong because it was intercepted.. 6-6.
  • 19min - Hammoud's speed is a real problem for other teams.. he puts Hodges through a yawning gap.. the 2 are forming a great halves partnership today. 10-6.
  • Some issues with the coverage, but we have scored 2 more I suppose.. says were up 18-6 at half time. all the scores are scrambled on NSWRL site also.
  • 43min - Head Clash for Langdon (Cant get up, Fijian got up like it was nothing but looked after him)
  • 45min - Had to watch this a few times, grubber into our in-goal was a ping pong and they came up with it.. 18-12.
  • 63min - Finally we get to attack and Hodges is quick to get into 1st receiver and easily steps his defender to spin and go in again.. 22-12.
  • 73min - Hammoud swings left from a scrum.. our speed got us an overlap pretty easily.. Hodges was out there who I thought was gonna get it.. but luckily he didn't throw that ball cause their winger had come out for an intercept.. instead of played it short to Afu who breaks out of a tackle to crash over.. again nice play from the halves. 30-12.
Some specific notes on players:
  • This game was in the balance until the 63rd minute.. Fiji run harder and hit harder than us (the boys will be bruised this week), it was really the halves that were the difference.. Hammoud was fast and Hodges seemed to be in the right place at the right time.. whether it was at ctr or first receiver.. he sensed it and attacked.. Ive always liked Hodges, has a big boot.. but has struggled so far this season.. maybe a break out game for him.
