2026 NSW Cup & Jersey Flegg

I know there’s a long way to go, but it does make me wonder whether any club has ever topped NSW Cup and finished with the wooden spoon in first grade in the same season.
I don't think it'll come to pass because before the end of the year, the new coach will load up on those high quality young players in reserve grade now which will make it hard for Talau to motive all the nonperforming veterans Flanno has recruited.

But if he replaces those called up to first grade with the best from SG Ball and Jersey Flegg....... All bets are off.

And this clown says there’s no one in cup to replace these players. Top of the table, play a beautiful style most weeks. The Cronulla joker needs the bullet now. Not in 3 weeks, not at the end of the season. NOW!!

Agree, the only problem I have is our cup players come into a losing team with not a hope in sight. When was the last time Stewart, Couchmens and Halangahu won a game and sung a song. It would have to start playing with your mind sooner or later. We really are between a rock and a hard place and Flanno has put us there.

You’ve outlined a strong argument, R redv13, that the State Cup coach should replace the current first‑grade coach.
I mentioned Willie Talau after the GC debacle. He’s coached and mentored some of these kids through the grades over the last 3 or 4 years. Won SG Ball comp. Moves up to NSW Cup last year and takes them to the GF. Top of the table again this year. But we all know D Young will take over as interim at the very least.

Does anyone know if Talau would actually want to be a HC. I remember Demetriou, excellent cup coach and assistant, but we all know what happened when he took over at Souths.

I dont think that will happen George, there would be a lot of drama in upper management if that occurred. I would like to see him as an assistant though.
It is unlikely Justadragon, and it would probably mean Young and Ennis exit with the current coach. Even so, the squad would rally around Talau and respond far more decisively to his on‑field instructions.

All in all a multitude of decisions are to be made by those in charge at head office. This season has been a disaster so far and will get worse in the games against Souths and Roosters. Zero wins from 8 games already is a train wreck and there will be lots of suffering, pain, stress, anger and frustration to go through.

2026 for us will be a year to forget in many ways but also a year that when we reflect back to it in the next 2-3 years we will be glad that it happened.

You do know NSW cup & Jersey Flegg (this thread) have only lost 1 game each?

Course he knows. He is talking about Firsts and this clubs continued short comings in both our coaches and our roster. Now we are losing another of our most experienced forwards, Jaydn S'ua.Thankfully we have replacements as promising forwards we have in abundance. Jake will slot in their seamlessly next season.

Wrong. I have seen him play outside of the halves plenty of times, lock, centre and full back. The guy is a genuine utility with natural ball skills. Willie Talau needs to acknowledge this.

Sorry are you saying that i am wrong in stating that quinn is only being used when a half is backing up into 1sts or that it is wrong of talau to be doing this?

Whose spot does he take in the team? Why does Talau need to acknowledge this? The team has only lost one game this season (the one Quinn played 80)

WE dont need another defensive liability at full back in Drinkwater. This young Burton seems to have been given plenty of space on this thread. Hang fire guys, he is only 17, a mere baby. We need a new custodian for at least the next three yrs. Fleggs Lucas Borg has impressed me, may be worth a gamble if we wanna recruit internally.

Thanks Random, good luck to them and of course I hope that they will win the big prize. It is just a shame that it is not first grade.

I hope that Willie Talau is recognised for all of the good work that he has done from Juniors to Cup successes. He, in my opinion should transition into either the Head Coach ( he has coached nearly all of the players in first grade already and they would play for him for sure) or as an assistant to a prominent Head Coach in first grade either this year or next.

Watched the cup game back, gheez that halves combo looked unreal

Wish LKT could play like that more often, looked so locked in and demanding of the ball.

Dovetails well with Reed because their both so naturally inclined to play like the 6 and 7 respectively

I genuinely think it’s not all doom and gloom with the roster despite what many say, couple tweaks and introduction of some talented young guys into the fold and 18 months from now we could be much better off.

Side note - I think Drinkwater is a massive catalyst for the attack if we sign him, stats the last 5 years are incredible

The thing with a new coach is they get that first year grace period so the pressure is quite low
