2027 TOP 19

Btw I just joined this forum and it is excellent. None of the ego and rubbish of the other forums which are less about facts and more about poster egos. Keep up the great work - also for the oldies here my Sheridan Stand name is from the fact I used to stand at the bottom of that stand at the SCG and watch the great saints teams of the 70’s with my Dad - rarely we sat in the stand itself but either way I sung with the dragon army who packed the stand full of red and white and we would sing all day long. Simpler and better days back then imo
Welcome

tbh I would like to know who is the natural leader within the group.... both on and off the field.. potentially its one of the guys coming also... there might be a really obvious candidate that will emerge.. however unless they are stripping it off gutho.. its a tricky one cause he may not be in the 17 potentially... makes it rly hard for a new captain.. but pretty sure gutho will do everything possible to make it work.. proper gentleman.

But yeah I saw a video of Hamish a while back being quite annoying to a teammate.. which is all good but just maybe a reminder that hes still a very young man... and might be a couple of years off being a genuine captain.. NFI.. just curious what he would be like as the head honcho.
From an old coaches perspective its far too early to be giving that responsibility to any of our young rising stars.

If its not Gutherson then for me its KK.

Welcome to this Forum S Sheridan Stand. We do our best to maintain being Gentlemen and Scholars and keep the Dragons flame burning. The 70's of course was a very good period for the Big Red V.
In answer to your query as to who the captain of the winning 1977 and 1979 premiership sides were - they were Steve Edge for '77 and Craig Young for '79.

There is no guarantee that Gutho will be on the field full-time. KK stays on for a good deal of the time and so does Drinkwater. To me the captaincy should be given to a well spoken person who can articulate well with the refs and also can be strong enough to hold the team together and be accepted by the individual players. Would those two have those qualities or would Hamish Stewart have those traits?

Some names/ages/games

Isaiah Katoa - 58th game aged 21
Nathan Cayless - 36th game aged 22
Tino Fa (insert remainder of name) - 50th game aged 22
Craig Young - 44th game aged 23

If he plays the remaining 4 games in the season then game 1 next year will be
Hamish Stewart - 44th game aged 22

There is precedence for that that level of experience ... Craig Young especially telling given JoDragons comment above and the fact that in that first year as captain 1979 we won the premiership - also Dean would be very aware of that one.

The limited success of our team this year is down to our young pack and to see a leader emerge from that crop would be fantastic

Love precedence, when the time is right to promote from within my front runners would be T Couchman v H Stewart in 2028/ 2029. Just my views

Last few weeks have changed my mind

1. Drinkwater
2. Tu (R)
3. Suli (R)
4. Holmes (L)
5. Sami (L)
6. Nikorima
7. Metcalf
8. Koloamatagi
9. Liddle
10. T. Couchman
11. Egan (R)
12. Stewart (L)
13. Ryan

14. Watson
15. Loko
16. Halangahu

17. Webster
18. Nick
19. LKT

I still would prefer we recruit a new 12 and play Hamish at lock but for now this is my round 1 team.
Recruitment/replacement of the likes of Gutho/Atkinson/Kyle/Kerr/Suli would change the 3/4 line
Threre is no place for Gutho in the 19
I know Tu played well against the Sharks but I just think we need to inject another player with genuine speed on that wing or in the centre. We would be much more dangerous and able to take advantage of the playmakers that are coming.

Personally I think it’s ludicrous to even be mentioning any of the young forwards as captain for 2027. Let them continue to grow and get more experience, their football can do the talking for now and set the standards off the field too.

There is a number of them that could take on that role in a couple of years time but 2027 is way too early in my eyes. Drinkwater or KK would be the logical options if Gutho isn’t in the side.

i think the club are keen to cement local culture into the squad - they are big/vocal on it ... linking a lot of recent press/statements around our catchment and local juniors etc. I expect the next captain will be local.
If Gutho plays next season and there is a role for him in the team then he keeps it and the decision holds for 12 months which may be ideal

None of the incoming 6 have obvious captain credentials ... Drinky has 4 games replacement captain, Kodi 3 ... the others nothing in 1st grade.

So you have either a new dragon a bit older with minimal leadership credentials
or a longer term dragon but less experienced player but deeper connections to club/culture
It is a decision with pros and cons ...

Young as mentioned before has family heritage of young inexperienced but ultimately successful captain stories via his dad
There is precedence in the club and across the NRL with multiple current club captains coming into the role as 22/23 year olds - Katoa/Ponga/Crichton

Yes the likes of Stewart/Ryan are young .. i just think the writing is on the wall - Stewart as the song, a role that was traditionally the captains before changing in recent times.
