2027 TOP 19

i think the club are keen to cement local culture into the squad - they are big/vocal on it ... linking a lot of recent press/statements around our catchment and local juniors etc. I expect the next captain will be local.
If Gutho plays next season and there is a role for him in the team then he keeps it and the decision holds for 12 months which may be ideal

None of the incoming 6 have obvious captain credentials ... Drinky has 4 games replacement captain, Kodi 3 ... the others nothing in 1st grade.

So you have either a new dragon a bit older with minimal leadership credentials
or a longer term dragon but less experienced player but deeper connections to club/culture
It is a decision with pros and cons ...

Young as mentioned before has family heritage of young inexperienced but ultimately successful captain stories via his dad
There is precedence in the club and across the NRL with multiple current club captains coming into the role as 22/23 year olds - Katoa/Ponga/Crichton

Yes the likes of Stewart/Ryan are young .. i just think the writing is on the wall - Stewart as the song, a role that was traditionally the captains before changing in recent times.
What you say makes sense but I can tell you from my 1st hand experiences that making someone captain can definitely go either way especially at a young age and lack of 1sts experience.

Captain in 2027 is a dilemma for the club for sure and as I read all the posts I can’t pick a path yet:

1. Gutho - logical choice but I just can’t see him in the 13 unless major injury. I said in another post I like him on bench regularly but can’t captain from the 🌲
2. Stewart - love the update that Albert took captain role in 79 - I had forgotten that and means they moved on edge year before he left us for Parra (which devastated me as a boy and proved costly loss). I like Stewart as captain just not sure if shouldn’t be 2028 for him
3. Drinky - seems logical choice but isn’t home grown but not sure that matters tbh. Funny I got to meet Drinky in Vegas 2026 as he was playing at Wynn Golf Course and my caddy also ran his bag and introduced me - I thought he was a great guy and my caddy said he was a pleasure to caddy for - those caddies will speak their mind if someone is an idiot or big ego
4. KK - I know nothing about him as a captain materiak
5. Toby - that was a good laugh
6. KF - I heard Shane recommended him 😂

I'd be giving Tu a run at centre in the last few games to see what he's got.

Could be a goer there I reckon too, Tu, as well, perhaps, even, maybe...

Based on how we went this season & players on our list atm for next year

1. Drinky
2. Sami
3. Holmes
4. Suli
5. Tu
- I hope we get a centre, so holmes moves to the wing. Please find a good defensive centre.

6. Kodi
7. Metcalf
- No brainer

8. KK
9. Lidds
10. LPT
11. Stewart
12. Egan
13. T. Couchman
- For the balance of our pack I want Ryan to start on the bench, he provides very good leg speed against fatigued defenders. Imo KK & LPT as big body 1+2 punch would be more helpful with early conservative play.

14. Watson
15. R. Couchman
16. Jacob H
17. Nick T
18. Webster
19. Atko
- Bench covers middle, edge & spine. Watson covers hooker & small ball lock. Jacob H provides size, R. Couchman workrate & mobility while Nick T gives us explosiveness & 2rf cover. Webster for added size & Atko for 1-7 coverage.

Potentially forgot some players, I prefer Atko over Gutho.

makes a lot of sense ... anyone who knows me knows i am an advocate for one couch starting and one playing from the bench .. either or doesnt matter to me ...

I think in that bench 14/15/16 play and we react to the game ie Tu yesterday with the remaining three ...

The 3/4 line is our weakness but hopeful that a better spine can do something with that 3/4 line

I am hopeful there will be off season changes to the three quarters though.
