NSW Cup and Jersey Flegg, 2025

SGI Jersey Flegg
These are the notes from the first trial, still watching the second now.

NSW Cup Trial 1 (v Souths) Win 16-12:
  • Silky pass from Ramsey for our first try (he's at fullback), threaded it through the defence into BRumbles handles on the wing.. who passes back inside for Allan @ctr, who i deadset would never have recognised with flowing locks... Ramsey is goalkicking which is a first.. misses an easy one...that try came off the back of plenty of early powerful carries from our forwards but tbh.. were 1min into the 1st trial they should be energetic.
  • Souths score next, just burrowing between Ramsey & Latu.. Ramsey is a bit of a target in the defensive line I imagine.
  • Ramsey with a 1on1 try saver after Webster is penalised after the guy playing the ball fell over with noone touching him.. deadset..
  • Webster looks huge.. been good in D, talking and some good hits.. only had a few hitups nothing special so far.. Ramsey there getting the ball knocked out with a good hit attacking their line... then giving away a penalty in frustration.
  • Boys are getting tired now 19m in havent seen any subs.. souths slice thru, I think it was Nick who didnt move laterally quick enough but this is some shocking footage tbh.
  • Another attacking movement, Ramsey chiming in again, getting the ball out to Allan with a very quick catch and pass to put Benny Rumble into the corner for his 2nd. It is windy but Codys goalkick this time finished about 4 posts to the right.. he made it hard for the ingoal officials.
  • Next try was a weird one.. they dropped it cold after a 20m restart off their line.. NickT picks it up and they get it out to Gudgeon and a simple pass to Ravalawa in the corner..
  • Alhazim has a very similar frame to Halangahu..pretty fearless ball carries.. Kyle Stone was also on the set before though he got picked up at the end.
  • Ramsey gets picked up and carted over the sideline with minimal help.. great.
  • Try on the buzzer.. kick from Tikinau bounces off opposition feet, Gudgeon picks it up back to TPH and out to Ravalawa for an easy 2nd try to finish.. literally zero conversions lol.. trial over we win 16-12.
How did Gudgeon go in the centres?

NSW Cup Trial 2 (v Bears) 6-6 Draw:
  • Tikinau missed a tackle which almost led to a try but Cody & Rav did a good job to shunt him out near the sideline.
  • Latus been strong esp for I think 18yr old, good PCM there but gave it away with a foot on the ball penalty, a dragons specialty.
  • Sh*t try there, Finau the 9 was involved in the tackle, Halangahu was pointing to the gap that needed to be closed as a result.. nobody did and they scored a try right where he was pointing.
  • This Noah Lester fella is trying to do a bit much, had a few errors now
  • Nearly a thing of beauty.. NickyT finally got room to get some pace up and had a good run and got it back for BRumble who puts a kick ahead for Gudgeon who fumbled it.. but I think he was tackled before he caught it so wait..ok we got a try out of it, maybe a penalty try... because our goalkick is in front....looks like cody was sacked, Haele goalkicking from in front 6-6.
  • Kyle Stone looks alright, not sure where hes come from.. I dont like assessing based on small sample size, Webster and Liu been good, Liu my pick so far in big minutes, looks dynamic and strong, MMolo has been off the back fence in his minutes.. he will be good for cup this year.
  • Oh BRumble is at fullback now, looks like the right edge is Lester @ctr, and a kid called Bohden Barrett on wing.
  • Nice little interchange betweeh TPH to Halangahu who turns and bats it back to BRumble.. Halangahu been quite so far, has his burrowing runs but like I feel if thats his game he could prob do that in the middle maybe.. I think its just an evolution year needed for him, probably he is dropping back once Egan returns also.
  • Defended a lot in that last 10mins.. good to hold on, both sides were tired and not playing particularly well.

How did Gudgeon go in the centres?
um he was alright.. very similar to Allan, not big bodies kind of a little on the slim side, he passed it when he needed to pass it so he did his job.. i found it hard to get a rly good readn a lot of them.. the camera angle and the short games and personnel changed.. BRumble is noticeably bigger/taller than the other outside backs.

I thought Finau Latu was the standout from the 2 NSW cup trials, looks so silky and damaging at the same time.
My only concern with him is he sometimes takes ages to get up off the deck when making a tackle, noticed it a few times now. It’s a problem that can be ironed out especially for a guy that’s not even 19 YO yet

This is my view.. like I thought Liu was our best forward overall, and hes only 20 tbh, and im not sure if hes played any cup yet.. if he has its maybe 1 game.. hes young.. and not sure what were going to do with his contract moving forward. there are not many dev spots left for next year, all the kids have taken them.

But probably next best was Latu, and given he is 18 and only played half a season of flegg.. if you could add 2yrs to his development, you could imagine how he would compare.. that said we'd have to get thru that 2yr period first.. hes already using up a Top30 spot and assumably wanting a sizeable upgrade and perhaps 1st grade expectations.. hes still got to earn that imo... I dunno whats going on in negotiation rooms currently with Crown Sports.. and hes 1yr younger than Tonga and Stewart I believe.. so fair that hes behind them in the pecking order to play in the charity shield.. but i feel like were just guessing around the conversations going on.. it could also simply be they wanted Latu to play cup and do bigger minutes and prove his worth, or even prove it to other clubs if hes determined to go to market.

Yeah I can see why the club maybe want to wait and assess how he performs before extending.

He’d be on minimum now and probably asking closer to 200-250k I’m assuming to extend and multiple years. If we didn’t have a shitload of good middles coming through we might have caved but with Meafou/Weatherall/Stewart and co. Around the same age he’ll have to knuckle down. Hopefully he can string 10-15 games in NSW cup and then in 6 months from now we are all saying about him what we said about the Couchmans 6 months ago

The Couchmans were absolute standout cases also.. debuting at age 19 (and they were a bit green that first year though), before them I cant remember a player bar someone like Aitken being first grade ready that early.. most of the forwards took YEARS to come good.. it felt like 22-24 type age before they come of age (could be wrong with this list, but its my rough recollection) but names like JDB, Ford, Host, Leilua, Sele, Lawrie, im trying to remember them all.. felt like we were trying to cover them for a long time before they were holding their own... and I might say the same thing about Liu, and Coric..and its not abnormal to be 23-24 before your first grade ready.. thats when middles are supposed to start their careers... but these days its very hard to hold players back that long with limited contracts and other clubs circling. But Hazleton is an example of a player that did come on later...

This new wave of kids though, they seem a step up, hard to imagine Tonga, Latu, CST & Couchies needing more than about Age 21 to be properly first grade ready.. not sure yet on DMeafou and Weatherall yet, would like to see them play more ball and flegg this year.

Yeh not heard of him either. Impressed me in first game, yet to see the second.

Another who impressed me on the weekend was Flegg centre Te-Moananui, was a stand out in the backs, fast, skillful, busy, safe under bombs, the same attributes he showed in his Ball Cup Premiers year. Make a good f/b too as he is also bigger than back then....

Halangahu
Like you I want him in the middle, prop as he must now be tipping the scales at about 110/112kg. Needs more involvement instead of waiting for the ball. Not certain that he is still 18, Finau Latu 19, made some awesome carries, even popped one after making 10pcms. I see him taking Jakes spot on the edge as he looks more of an 80 min player than his Aussie Schoolboy mate..

Was a few interesting selections today:
  • Weatherall isnt named in SG Ball?
  • JHalangahu starting 2nd rower in NSW Cup
  • Jett Liu back into Jersey Flegg (didnt realise he was so young)
  • Buchanan named in Jersey Flegg
  • Latu starting lock in NSW Cup
  • Hammoud named on bench for Jersey Flegg, that has to be a good thing re: his injury? Weird bench with him and Afu though.
  • Fifita already back on the NSW Cup bench
  • Allan not named.. ffs those injuries...
  • Sele not named (see Allan above)
  • Kirk named Steelers fullback (a: injury, b: I dont think its his right spot)
Getting to watch the Dragons v Steelers weekend is so good though, many hours of time saved! And guaranteed a win in all games.

  • Very young pack! I wonder what will happen when a few of the extended reserves drop back. #10 and #11 back to Jersey Flegg?
  • #10 being fast tracked for NRL?
  • Now we know why Finau wasn't selected for first grade.
  • #3 playing at #3 is an interesting choice.
  • I think this might be a position #4 excels in.
  • Impressive centres though I thought #4 might have been promoted to NSW Cup.
  • I don't know who #6 is but he must be good to keep #14 on the bench.
  • Speaking of which, is #14 going to sit on the bench the whole game unless there is an injury in the halves?
  • Hoping #5 goes well. Big, fast and seems to have some pretty good skill.

Maybe because it's round 1 but there seems to be errors in the line ups.

Allan will play centre
Si should pass protocols and push Ben to bench.

Shadi won't be playing

Leeroy should of been named too.

So it was a case of Finau not being selected. Maybe he ran over Flanno's dog after all.
