NSW Cup and Jersey Flegg, 2025

GCRV

SGI NSW Cup
When SG finishes up, plenty will filter back up into this Flegg side, but if last year taught us anything, its not that easy to suddenly make magic happen.. and the players get breaks and have injuries etc... so its not all at once.

Dragons SG though wont be in finals, so CST and maybe Smythe will come up soonish... but the Steelers hopefully go deep.. eventually Borg, Kirk, Heidke, Reed, Fitz, Timmo, DMeaf, Weatherall, Saifiti and maybe Taufa or Phillips are going to move up.. not that they can all fit tbh.. but injuries in higher grades might make room by then.
Reed will be the big inclusion.

Need a good pack though in Flegg, Hutchinson I thought was as good as anyone last year, but they need a few more, I thought Liu was named in Flegg this week, and hes not here.. so either hes injured or hes up in nsw cup because someone else is injured..

Jesse Williams beat a few tackles but threw a ridiculous pass into 3 dogs players.. i thought maybe he had broken his hand, but hes still out there.

wasnt a bad fightback, got within 6pts there.. but too big a lead to be giving up early in the game.

anyway got a break now till the big games start, might watch HM and NSW Cup, and catch up on SG Ball late tonight.

Note: CMeafou out for the HM game.

Better second half after a shocking start. Our right side defence and through the middle was very poor. Much improvement needed to be competitive.

Jesse did make an error or two but also had a couple of strong runs. More involvement would be good though. Hope his head knock is not too bad.

Harold Matts (U17) Dragons v Steelers:
  • CMeafou not named for the Steelers.. shame.
  • Dragons have had all the running in the first 20 minutes.. Ah Kee is the conductor in everything.. every pass with a touch of class, looking long and passing short, holding them back, double pumping.. hes probably if im honest trying harder to impress than he needs too, few wild passes too... but he is the x-factor in this side.
  • Despite all that possession though, the dragons only landed 1 try, and then gave a length of the field intercept from the 7 Charlie Jones to Ballinger the winger. That will probably come back to hurt them because this Steelers side has been really good at staying in games for 80 minutes (currently unbeaten).
  • Tries in the corner have been disallowed by both sides, very willing contest, a little bit of rivalry I would imagine between the 2 feeder squads.. but nothing nasty like last week.
  • 6-4 Steelers @ Half-Time, neither side has executed well in attack, but good physicality has kept them both in the game.
  • Steelers looked to run the length but I think its been bombed, Burton involved in setting it up, but regardless Dragons scramble well.
  • Back and forth continues.. but off the back of a penalty the Dragons are attacking the Steelers line... Ah Kee has setup Phoenix Johns who runs an inside line for a pretty easy try. Steelers 6 Dragons 10.
  • Biggest unit ive seen #25 McGuiness for the Steelers a classic hip drop on #12 Elmasri.. hate that.. the 2 sides are basically teammates and u pull that stunt.. cant even move his leg or put weight on it and hes carried off.. only got 10mins in the bin for it.. I would have sent him off.
  • Ah Kee with the individual brilliance to leave 3 defenders in his wake and run 70metres.. he has bulk and speed this kid.. I keep saying hes nuggety but hes clearly athletic.. Burton has wrapped him up in a brilliant 1on1 tackle over the goal-line.. I actually wonder if he got it down.. but its been ruled held up by Burton. Probably our 2 best U17 prospects coming together on the field there.
  • These are 2 really evenly matched teams.. been duking it out with no points all game.. but after repelling the steelers for ages.. noone gets into dummy half after the winger catches the bomb.. and finally the steelers manage to spread it the full width and 'just' get it down in time.. dissapointing for the dragons who are every bit as good as the steelers today.. despite only having 2 wins this season.
  • Conversion from sideline from Humphries.. kicked well today.. Steelers 12-10 3mins to go.. wow. game over.. unlucky dragons honestly.. but the Steelers march on.. Steelers didnt seem to have any crispness in attack today.. stayed in it defensively, and tbf the Dragons defended well also. For the Dragons they are almost a 1-man machine in AH Kee, Field ran the ball back well tbf, but the points scoring is really just 1 man.
  • Onto NSW Cup, they have scheduled SG Ball at the same time.

Better than Buchanan?
Lyric had some good touches today, hes definitely not in front of Buchanan.. but he doesnt have to be.. he will however have serious pressure once those U19 kids in Heidke & Timmo step up.. I like Okusitino too, but realistically hes not going to beat out those others if they are healthy.

Heidke and Kirk are both now removed from todays SG Ball squad.. Kirk seemed obvious but Heidke is a new injury I didnt know about.. esp with no Timmo that hurts and even with both out Tomo is on the wing.. obviously theyve had a rethink on him... Kye Andres @ fullback is what I was asking for before, I thought he had really nice touches last week, very fast.

only playing the Dragons though.. will it matter who they play I hate to say.. Weatherall is back in the teamlist also..
