Where else do you fit Nick T in Eric Eric. Either he or Stewart will have to make way if Flanno wants to continue his policy of testing our young guys for Firsts. LPT will replace Toby I am thinking, in team numbers, still be off the bench for his first year. Jeez we really lack quality bookend depth, without Toby. Do our coaches even rate Liu and Fifita our two biggest guys. Jack will always be our workaholic, pack leader but do we have him for even a further year. Klemmer shud be making more impact than he does, Guler is a good worker but a bit small, ditto Mike Molo, Sele is too injury prone. We need to go on a big prop shopping spree in the off season.

NSW Cup - Match Notes (34-4 Win):
  • We went up 18-0 early and we wasted a lot of opportunities after that to really put them away, we dominated the entire first half.. and went on to dominate the 2nd.. even defending with 12men at the end.
  • There isnt a lot of silk or skill in this team.. but there are beasts across the park, physically dominant, and at no point were the Jets looking like coming back into the match. I barely cracked a sweat...
  • CST on debut injured his ankle in the first 2minutes, but came good and was wonderful on debut, easily cutting it with his slightly older colleagues... he got a 2nd row position but he carts it up as hard as anyone in the middle.. very thick body and doesnt get pushed back. Hes not going back to Flegg, he belongs at this level... his only flaw is he keeps trying to pop an offload 'every' time, and it costs on a few occasions, hes gotta settle that down.. I think hes a middle long term anyway, focus less on the fancy stuff and more running over and between defenders with his footwork.
  • The whole pack though destroyed their opposition, its so weird to see us rolling through teams.. makes everything so much easier.. every set we pick it up on our own 10m line and finish with an attacking play at the other end...
  • Ilias was trying hard, but I dunno.. he needs a yard of pace so that he is more of a running threat, he always ends up passing in traffic, and so many balls were knocked on, not all his fault, buchanan really struggled to work with him, his hands were pretty gross, he dropped heaps of balls in attack.. actually both sides struggled in attack tbh (i.e. left and right).. its a bit like first grade.. I prefer when we dont throw passes cause were better off going thu them with more size and strength.. we dont have silky ball handlers in this side.. Buchanan one cntre dropping heaps and NickT is an animal but his passes are average, hes really not a centre... so really 0 gun centres in the squad.
  • SFinau was a beast with his PCM, honestly runs 15-20m on many of his carries, Cody was electric, over and over again he beats the first tackle.. took an epic contested bomb.. ive got no problems with the way flanno picks his squad, except for the wingers, I think hes cost us 2-3 wins by choosing the wingers the way he has. Crap.. 15mins to go and Sione has been carried off with a lower leg injury.. gg.
  • Lawson isnt the complete package yet (he needs to add a jump to his bomb catching cause hes gonna get belted in first grade), but his intensity is so much better than Sloan and his speed so much better than Allan.. I am nervous that hes gonna make errors in 1sts.. hes got work to do but I just think we play him and wear the errors.. atleast he has a ceiling still above him and the right attitude.
  • Sele was solid, he is probably close to being returned to 1st grade, problem is he doesnt have long minutes in him with his lack of fitness thru injury, neither does Tonga, so if Toby is injured we could be in strife for minutes moving forward.. even Jack is doing shorter minutes lately... Klem will need to do more.
  • We've got a rel dilemma with 4 2nd-rowers in this squad, I feel like its time to move RFM on early, we have no use for him.. as it is we have NickT playing in the Centres which is tbh a waste of a centre development position.. and once RFM comes back, 2 of these guys are missing out on their preferred position.. I also think Heidke should move up in weeks to come, genuine strike centre who should be in Nicks position and coming on fast... lets lean in, we have 0 centres otherwise, Buchanan is filling a gap and ill be interested where he gets to in 1-2yrs time, he has speed and skill yet his physical size puts him in a weird spot where hes not really big enough to play wing or ctr, nor skilled enough for fullback... and so I think hes a filler for now, Dev Spot @most for next season.

Flanno dropping a winger because he’s had enough LMAO, blokes coaching is seriously in question, I’d love to see the consensus on flanno at the end of the season because if we keep going the way we’re going we’ll finish bottom 2 or 3 easily

We ain’t lucky enough to play a reserve grade panthers/broncos during origin like last year

Lawson and Hame in for Sloan and Toby should be the only changes

Same old Fifita. Good in short bursts. Too short. Liu was very good again. As far as I could see anyway.
yep this is accurate, but I always feel when watching lower grades.. you can only judge so much when its that 1-sided, because everyone looks good.. the real test is when its tough going, because thats what they are going to be facing in 1st grade, no retreating defence... esp a side like us who is struggling a bit.

Thank you Rev for that amazing summary. I was wondering how Jonah Glover played. From second grade games I saw earlier this year he appeared to be a Sandon Smith style of player.

I will say for Glover that he is full of energy.. he competes, hes backing up.. there is a lot to like.. kicking game isnt wonderful, and that alone I think may be a reason not to pursue him further.. but there is a lot to like.. but as a 7, its just a huge call to play him in 1sts.. like a rookie 7 is such a tough job.. and next year its almost certainly Atkinson+LKT as the halves combo.. so its a temporary gig.. and Kyle is in the jersey also.. who atleast tackles well which is something Glover has been criticised for, though tbh ive never noticed him missing tackles...

I just dont think we will go that path.. but part of me is curious to see how he would go...

Id also be curious to see how Gutho would go in the halves, but it doesnt seem feasible when we dont have a standout fullback replacement.

Jo what in your opinion is the reason for a bloke with limited stamina. Specially a big, strapping guy like Vili. Is it physical or mental or attitude?
Every player has their own level of stamina. To play in 1sts that stamina needs to be increased to match the intensity of the game. Injury certainly can affect stamina, as can the mental capacity to increase an individuals stamina.

In my day we had a decent physical trainer. He was actually the NSWPOL academy head instructor.

The best way to increase stamina is to actually have a mixture of strength training and cardiovascular exercises in our gym routines. So 3 days a week officially in the gym, weights 1 session, cardiovascular 1 session and a mix of both in our 3rd session.

The one that hurt the most was the mixed session. So we had a metal flat bottomed tray on wheels. On that tray we placed weights and we had to pull and push that wheeled metal tray over a designated course within a time limit.

You had to have the desire to achieve what you initially thought was unachievable.

We did and those available didn't want a bar of us, ADF and RCG to name just two

Gutho is 30 yrs old been playing 1st grade for 12 yrs, last time he played in the halves was 2018. In that time he avg a try every 4th game. He is not the answer. If Gutho was injured or suspended my next choice fb would be Holmes. Just my views

I actually watched the game and agree with what you have said. We had no trouble rolling down the middle of the park our pack was simply to big and fast for theirs. They had 5 players with limited 1st experience we had 7.

We set the tone for this game in the 1st 20 min with 3 unanswered tries on the back of a pack rolling forward. 3 of the first 4 tries were scored by our front row, you don't see that happen very often we were just far superior to their pack which was a bit surprising considering their position on the ladder.

The quality of the actual game was not up to 1sts standards and in reality most of our team would struggle to hold a permanent top 17 spot.

In saying that I believe NT playing out of position for reasons best known to management scored a try but his sin binned at that time of the game was a bit silly.

Finau reminds me of how Tamale developed and we know what happened there, the same fate may befall us with Finau. I didn't mind how his brother when he came on sparked the dummy half play and he scored shortly after replacing Muhleisen.

Young Glover well his defence worries me. He can manage a game and this year he has run much more than previously. Do you take a chance on him in 1sts?

Ramsay has come back from his life threatening illness better than I thought was possible. But will he ever play 1sts again? Lawson also scored and I agree with your assessment of him, he could with time play a role in our 1sts with experience.

A pleasing win that if we could reciprocate in 1sts would make us a top 8 contender. Now 2nd on the ladder behind a very good Warriors team who touched us up . I'm confident this team will play semi finals football this season.
