NSW Cup and Jersey Flegg, 2025

On other sites everyone that knows nothing about football were complaining about how Sloan should have taken on the fb with a kick and chase and that cost us a win against the Warriors. So yes it's hard to explain to the so called armchair experts.
I’m of the belief that Sloan should have backed himself and taken the fullback on and try to get past him with his speed. He definitely had the momentum in that play against a flat footed fb. Even if unsuccessful, back yourself son and have a crack. Not blaming Sloan at all

Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

I'm cranky about the try they were awarded.
The joys of 2025. Whats disallowed one week is a try the next!! Not sure if you watched Manly v Tigers. The try to Taylan May with Samuela Fainu running ahead of the play!! Like wtf. I thought NFL started in a few weeks. A team is going to pay a huge price in the finals with these bird brains in the bunker

I saw it. That was ridiculous but Tigers were always going to win. Not the case in our game.

  • Is the bench hooker, #3 really going to start in the centres?
  • Is my count off saying 8 Flegg eligible players are in Cup this week and 4 more are in the NRL team?
  • Disappointing loss last week but with half a team moving up from SG Ball against a lot of Newcastle players who have played NRL was always going to be difficult.
  • Slipped to 3rd on the table now but hopefully recover to be 2nd over the next 3 games.
  • For me this is a case of who's who. Not in the sense of full of stars but who are they. A lot of them anyway.
  • It'd be good to see what #6 and #7 can do behind a good, steady pack which isn't bringing in a few new ones every week. Guess we'll have to wait until next year.
  • Another disappointing loss last week but they are only playing for pride so remaining healthy is more important than winning at this point

Cup need to finish 2nd or 3rd no different to give themselves second chance in finals.

The 18th/19th men from tonight can drop back for NSW Cup also, not sure if thats a huge improvement or not.. if it was Sloan for example, maybe Ramsey could play ctr.. but maybe its not worth the mess.. RFM you would think will take Sloans spot we shall see..

I guess finishing 4th means playing Warriors in NZ which is not a great result.. but ultimately we just want some form before finals.. we (and the eels) will get some players back which Warriors/Jets/Panthers wont in early finals weeks.

No home game finals in cup
1 bye
2v3 winner v 1
4v5 loser out

Heavyweight v bantamweight battles for most of our Flegg encounters this season. Apart from a couple of future stars, Charlie, Kade, Lyric, Corey we have struggled with a small pack against some behemoth packs, such as the Panthers are fielding today. Result, another hammering.

Super comeback by our boys, but all too late, game went in the first half. Neat lay off by Lyric sends Andrews in for another. We aint finished yet either with Cooper Hale finishing off a midfield break by, was it Fitzgibbon? We won the second 40 comfortably, so some compensation. Newcomer Kye Andrews nabs four. Has some toe this guy.

They've had a lot, especially in the forwards, play NSW Cup or NRL all year. I don't think Buchanan, Halangahul, LPT have played a Flegg game all year.

Flegg has been a hard watch (32-44 loss)... notes:
  • Penrith bit too big and strong in general.. that said it was once again us not holding our own early.. penrith scoring in the 1st minute, and some ridiculous fluky stuff came off the entire first half... compounded by some terrible D from Toby Rumble, obviously not just him but almost gifted 2 tries to his opposition winger on his own.. its not good enough.. basically not even a hand laid on.
  • Penrith are being real niggly dawgs, game has threatened to explode constantly.. ref is just giving them everything also.. much like in 1st grade..
  • I think we could have stayed in the match if not for those early tries, but reality is we were outgunned.. when we have the ball we just are really clunky thesedays, its changed a lot since mid season.. I know its just 1 player but the Reed <> Heidke combination on is always 12pts a game... and now its halves and fullback (Reed, Hodges & Fitzgibbon) who have never played as a combination.. the outside backs aren't crazy threats and then the defensive stuff.. though tbf Lyric has some real xfactor moments including a flick off the ground for a try which was ace.. and bat backs in the air.. im not sure he is a future first grader.. but I am still hopeful.. I love his athleticism.
  • Actually shout out to Kye Andrews who actually ended up with 4 tries... he was good in the air and working outside Lyric was a nice combination...
  • Rubie good again... Weatherall had moments... Ackers I recall a couple of runs, 1 dud error.. and he actually sold a try where he was held up but the ref couldnt see it and took his word for it.. which was nice given we didnt get much else go our way....
  • We scored a few late tries.. but I wouldnt read much into it.. other than we need to at some point learn that 1st half defence is crucial.. and dammit as I write this with 2mins left, Lyric has gone for a miracle play and either done a Neck injury or what i think is a Cat 1 HIA.. but theyve left him on.. but id be surprised if he plays again this season.. surely there was concussion...
Reed really isnt gonna learn much else in the grade though, esp in the team he's in.. he needs a better quality system.. but with 2 weeks to go.. maybe this is 2026 challenge now.

Bummer if Lyric misses the season ending games. But he can be a bit of a dare devil trying to pull off the impossible play at times. Most times he succeeds, not this time. Looking forward to seeing how he and others handle the step up to Ressies next season.
