Some news on the Manly scrimmage today, along with a few things that hopefully wont effect round 1:

'Dragons host Sea Eagles in Kogarah scrimmage'

''While no score was kept in the opposed session, the Dragons' backs enjoyed some of the attack scenarios with Mat Feagai and Christian Tuipulotu crossing for "tries" on the end of shape and Holmes touching down late in the scrimmage.

The likes of Tyrell Sloan (foot), Jacob Liddle (hand) and Corey Allan (knee) sat out of the scrimmage as they target a return to play in the upcoming trials.''

Theres also a nice DT article for us about the scrimmage today as well, havent been able to archive it yet but heres the bulk of it for those like me who dont want to give Murdoch media any cash:

St George Illawarra v Manly pre-season scrimmage: Clint Gutherson shines

Clint Gutherson's impact on St George-Illawarra has been immediate with the experienced fullback poised to prove one of the buys of the year.
Gutherson's leadership and communication was the glaring takeaway from a scrimmage session against Manly held behind closed-doors at Jubilee Oval on Friday morning.
The crucial 60-minute hitout was held under game conditions with almost all of the Dragons and Sea Eagles big guns including Valentine Holmes, Lachlan Ilias, Daly Cherry-Evans, Tom Trbojevic and Jake Trbojevic taking part in the session.

SAINT GUTHO

With only staff members from both clubs, injured players, a couple of security guards and The Daily Telegraph allowed inside Jubilee Oval, the bellowing voice of Gutherson reverberated across the grand old ground.
From fullback, the former Eels star marshalled the Dragons around the field like a relentless cattle dog, barking directions and raucously applauding his teammates every tackle and carry.
His defensive line organisation was relentless, still screaming at his middle forwards to shift left of the ruck despite there only being two seconds remaining on the clock.

WATCHFUL SLOAN

Standing behind Gutherson for almost the entire hitout was 2024 fullback Tyrell Sloan.
Sloan has been nursing a foot injury and was held back from the game simulation.
From under the goalposts, Sloan watched and listened eagerly at how Gutherson guided the Dragons back, forth and sideways with his voice.
Gutherson arrived at the Dragons declaring his desire to make Sloan a better player and the latter is clearly taking notes.

LOCKED-IN LACHIE

You could see the confidence of Dragons recruit Lachlan Ilias increase as the session wore on.
In his first serious hitout since suffering an horrific leg injury 10-months ago, Ilias looked sharp on the right-edge for the Dragons.
He combined perfectly on several occasions with right-edge backrower Jayd'n Sua, while he also was happy to test the line with his running game.
The new-look spine combination of Gutherson, Ilias, Kyle Flanagan and Damien Cook was far from stuttering, but instead fluent and well-balanced.

Seibs also giving us some credit for todays efforts which is always nice:

Matt Lodge returns to Manly in deal that combines construction, boxing and footy

“It was good to get some work against different opposition,” Seibold said.

“I was really impressed with the Dragons and their new spine. They looked very, very good. I also thought the Dragons had a real physicality about them and probably won that physical battle this morning.”

I reckon Illias is the key this year. We know what Gutho and Cook will bring. It'll be good. Illias is the big unknown.

Who were the Dragons starting wingers?

So Gutho directed the team around well. Illias was good, laying on a few tries. Who else was good in attack, which forwards were standouts and who was at fault for Manly's tries? Was it missed tackles, poor reads, mistakes or just very good Manly attack?

Unknown apart from the few allowed into the ground and reporters and of course those peering over the fence alah ' The Skull' for those old enough to remember him.

I'm told the young forwards especially Latu and Tonga looked not out of place in 1sts, time will tell if that is the youthful exuberance and adrenalin.

Multiple tries were scored by both teams,. The new spine appeared to work as could be expected for their first real hit out.

Gutho could be heard in the next suburb. Looking forward to our 1st named team against the Rorters next Sunday.

Don't forget it was minimal contact 4 x 20 min quarters. In boxing it is akin to what we use to call ,'' Shoulders down' sparring.

Yea I'm very keen to see he combos with Sua on that right edge, side note imagine having Sua and Suli both running at you lol no thanks.

It was CT and Matt on the wing in this one with Sloan watching gutho from the back while he's resting that injury.

Quick wrap
We played 3 times about 15 min, full contact game play, this is were we used our top 20ish. They weren't holding back there was even a scuffle
3 times 5 min, set practice stop start shit etc our young ones Loko Latu got about 10min in this.
Game play when best 13 on we looked the better team
Was impressed with Lachy kicking.
Val is class not just talent or skills top shelf class. It's been a while since we had that in the backs.
Tries Val 2 Mat Si Suli Ct Nau

Not only does he have that, but he gets it right, makes the right decision at the right time.
Zac was probably always a bit overrated. He was better when he was 19-20 than he is now. Relied more on footwork to beat defenders rather than just running hard. Won't surprise me if he ends up in the forwards at Parra.

Lomax 100% was better when he was younger because teams hadn’t figured him out yet.
He’s a very average centre who’s slow but good winger because of the physical attributes ie.Height and catching ability
Much prefer a Holmes/Suli at centre who can create something out of nothing

100% Agree, but we will hear about it from opposition fans and journos on those days where Moses kicks it perfectly for Lomax... to leap and crashes over.

We will miss him, but I think its a better situation for the squad.
