Recruitment & Retention 2027

The truth is Flanno hasn't had the cattle. As the saying goes. Don't let the truth get in the way of a good story. Remember no other prospective coaches even wanted the job to coach us, besides Young and Hornby. They didn't want the job, because they knew they didn't have the cattle to work with and that taking the job, was probably coaching career suicide. Flanno took the job, most other coaches didn't want. It is all about putting things into perspective. We made the semis once in the 12 years before Flanno took over.
Made the semis in 2015 and 2018 so twice

I think it would be a good move for both us & Su'a to trial him in the middle to gauge his effectiveness. If he can replicate Keaon performance then interest in him goes up from other clubs which increases contract $$$, he's a known commodity as a 2rf. It would also open up edge spots for the likes of Jacob, Nick T, Egan etc. I'm very confident he would perform better as a middle than the likes or Guler, Kerr, Sele & Lawrie.

I'd mainly want to see it for contract purposes, I'm happy to extend him if he's effective through the middle.
I rate Su’A as one of our best players and a top‑tier second rower. At the same time, I feel he has the physical presence and skill set to handle the middle just as effectively. I’d like to see him trialled up front to get a genuine read on how he goes there. If the switch works, we should be ready with an extension before other clubs start circling.

I rate his as well but I saw it mentioned yesterday, a good club would let him go in order to save money and bring in the next generation of second rower who we seem to be growing on trees at present.

Agree. He's a good player. But unless we retain him at a bargain price or a short contract, we should use the money elsewhere. Already have Egan, Ryan C., Halangahu, Nick T going forward. With the NRL salary cap, you don't want to spend too much on backrowers. It's probably OK to overpay him slightly to keep him till the end of 2028. But don't want to tie up too much future cap.

  • Egan & Jacob are only signed till end of 2027.. which is 2yrs away.. a lifetime.... but means they can talk to agents from Nov 1st.. so either could be the prime candidates for an extension.
  • Nick we believe has been in the Top30 for months, but for some reason hasn't been officially announced..
  • CST is still making his mark.. Coutts could get a contract at some pt, but long way to go on that front.. Treweek been good early rounds also.. but again way fown the pecking order

Need your favourite junior, Heidke signed long term. A big, fast elusive centre. How badly do we need one of them?

You have to spend on spine and middles. Have to find value with OBs and backrowers.
Couldn’t agree more, I think that with the pace of the game now Hooker is more important than ever.

Harry Grant and Blayke Brailey arguably the best players on their teams. God I’d kill for one of them.

Mason Phillips/Chapman/Coelho hopefully one of them can be a stud at 9

Phillips has looked pretty good in a struggling Steelers team, get him in the flegg side and maybe even cup later this year with a strong pack and I think he’d excel

I like Chapman. But he's still in short pants. We'll need a bridge between Liddle, who turns 30 this year, and our current junior reps. Right now, we're OK because Liddle is a gun. Cook is good too.

I reckon they’ll let cook go at the end of the season and play Kyle 14 with liddle starting

Great hookers are rare, I like Healey at the warriors but he wouldn’t move to play backup to liddle

That’s why when you get one you lock em up, Can’t overstate how good that Canberra spine will be 12-18 months from now with Owen Pattie in the fold

Asher wants to be a 6, I think he'll test the waters, we have a 21yo 9 in our sights
