Recruitment & Retention 2027

  • 100% and tbh I cant imagine we are moving Suli on unless we are pretty confident of landing a decent replacement..
  • I am assuming that Buchanan and Heidke and maybe Lyric are the OB's in reserve grade waiting for opportunity and not likely to be one of our 2 starting centres (could be wrong).. and tbf we have injuries allllllll the time in our outside backs.. like we never have our full strength backs on the field... and a few of these guys could handle wing... Williams maybe the 4th one, lets see who can stay fit and push up.
  • I am still waiting to 100% Confirm Sloan is moving on, and if so we do need backup for Drinkwater... that seems the hardest one to me.. the only path is if sign a Votano or an Averillo or someone who is rly comfortable moving between ctr and fullback.
  • I did think Gutho must have agreed to retire and take up coaching, but the thought of him in the centres next year may mean thats not the case.. and if its not the case, thats a bunch of cash I thought we had for 2027 which we now don't.
  • And Val, who rumour is has also been tapped.. hes probably on like 700-800k for his final year.. unlikely another NRL club picks up more than 500k of it.. so tbh unless we rly want him out for cultural reasons, hes probably on the books to cover ctr or wing.. and hes still a weapon if he can get anywhere near his best.,, but this is why I dont love the idea of buying DWZ or Taulagi.. I mean I'm excited if they came but along with Sami, they can only play wing, so that mean Val or Heidke or Lyric rly need to play ctr.. it just limits us... Averillo would be reeeallly good for protecting us in terms of depth.
  • I guess the rumours of chasing a Herbie or Bostock...they would be 2028 anyway.. so both Gutho and Val are finished by then.. so we would be cashed up in theory.

Mick C/ Readie floated medical retirement for Gutho
Gutho amongst the coaching staff would be great
Does it even need to be a medical retirement or can he just retire? Either way that was the rumour that it was actually Manly who have offered him a coaching gig for 2027.. if not them we could maybe offer him something for 12mths.. but Mug hinting at him playing centres makes me think thats no guarantee... its not the end of the world, but its just 800k or so of cash we could have bought 2 young OB's instead who are faster.. unless Gutho is also our fullback depth.. I hadn't considered that..

I think Fale will end up a winger.. maybe in time he could improve @ctr though, that said hard if hes not playing there... but the time on the wing will not hurt at all in his development. I only saw 1 cup game of his @ penrith, he made some dud reads, but he was a weapon in attack.

Its funny when you think about Centre depth being: Fale, Buchanan, Lyric, Heidke, most can also play wing + Williams.. it doesnt seem too bad.. its just that none of them seem fully-formed, certainly not at first grade level... but they will be a year older, another pre-season etc..

If you can’t get a crack in the outside backs consistently by the time your 25 at NRL level I’ve got some bad news for you

Your probably not a first grader, Buchanan/Heidke/Tsougranis all early 20’s and still have 2/3 years before its make or break in reality

Yeah thats why wing in theory should be such an easy place to recruit.. any fullback or centre who is missing some attribute needed, usually they can fall back to the wing where the game is much simpler defensively and they just worry about themselves in attack.. which is why its so weird that we have struggled for wingers for so long.

Can't rule out Fale who maybe could have played more for penrith if not for talent in front of him, but he is 26 next month, so agree its unlikely to see a lot of development still to come.. hes a big athletic body though that I would have thought could make a real fist of wing, its rly just errors (and injuries) I think holding him back.. at ctr its tricky.. he obv looks good @ training.. he was going to be first guy selected iirc to start this season.. so maybe he gets there..... BUT.... Imagine a world where Heidke is fit, Buchanan is fit, Val is fit, Sami, DWZ/Taulagi, I mean.. you wouldnt put Fale in front.. hes probably injury cover which we do need for sure.

the scare we have with Guler and the 6 others who are off contract is that in a fit of insanity we extend them.
Guler yes was off contract, but that doesnt mean we wouldnt extend him (the track record of derp speaks loud).
Better off confirming someone else has him ..

Now for Lawrie/Lawson/Leilua/Sele/Sloan and Tuipulotu

I can see a world where we give Lawrie and/or Sloan another year on probably 50% of their current contract, if those blokes rly dont want to go to Super League.. just to fill a few slots with depth that im not sure we will be able to source otherwise... and free up coin for another gun OB and what not..

I need to know if Gutho is staying or not.. cause if hes staying he does give us fullback coverage.. all be it hes not rly that player anymore, to go from Drinkwater to Gutho would completely nullify our attacking game.. but end of the day we still have him signed for 1 more year unless he's agreed to the retirement/coaching-gig.

Look if your happy that your strike centres are scoring on avg 2 tries a year sobeit, to me professionally it is unacceptable but that's just my views.
Yep. In the game today with the current rules applied I reckon your centres are just about THE most important positions on the paddock. They need to be able to score tries, compete in the air for attacking kicks, set up their winger, read the opposition attack and make the right defensive decisions to shut it down. They need to be tall, fast, agile and durable. They need to be able to play 80 minutes every week and make decisions in attack and defence that turn games.

McLean is the archetype centre for today’s game. Suli is a middle forward who accumulates good metres playing wide.
