Round 1 team so far in 2026

Can't see any possibility of Reed being considered this early.
If I was coach, Reed would be one of the first picked to start in the number 7 jersey. I think we would be a better chance of winning with Reed than Kyle.

As you all should know by now. I had Kyle there up until Saturday night, as it was the first game I had seen Reed play in grade. So I am not anti Kyle, I just think Reed is already better than him. I don't think King Togia is currently better than Kyle.

We are in a deep hole with Liddle out.

Wonder whether any of the top 36 have played Hooker as a junior.

KF may have to play 20-30 minutes at Hooker.

LKT has more experience.

Reed has more ability. If you are good enough you are old enough. Has a good kicking game. Speed, step, footy IQ.

Also opposing side won’t have much film on him.

His grubber and chip kicks were a sight for sore eyes, ala W.Smith.

One of LKT & Reed should be on the bench for round 1.

Leilua has the hands to play dummy half but will not keep up with the play.
W Smith a club legend

W Smith a legend and I watched him and Changa combine for many tries

what clubs have a 3rd string hooker capable of playing 1st grade but happy enough to play reserves. Cannot imagine it being a huge list.
Finau and LKT didn't have good games but weren't that bad either. Though I don't think Finau is in the top 30 or on a development contract so LKT in the team and he or Kyle to fill in at dummy half if Cook can't play 80 minutes. Flanno would prefer Cook gets a rest but I think he can play for the full 80 minutes unless he is injured.

Look, my views, yes Cook could play 80 minutes but his effectiveness will not be as good. He will be 35 yrs old during this season . I think it's too big an ask. It really all depends on the recovery of Liddle and from my past experiences with hammy injuries he may not come back as good. Time will tell.

I didn't see anything from haele to warrant a backup hooker spot but we might not have a choice.

If kade gets picked for charity shield then I'd like to see Kyle at hooker for 20-30mins and kade in the halves with atko. It might somehow be better than haele at hooker with Kyle in the halves.
Yeah, to me that is exactly how I see it. Cook isn't an 80 minute hooker anymore, Kyle some game time at hooker and there to cover an injury to a half if needed, with Reed and Acko in the halves looks our best option now. If Reed was to perform, he would then keep his spot when Liddle returns and Kyle would be back to NSW Cup. But thinking about it, I doubt Flanno will drop his son after him being first choice 5/8 all pre season. If they did what I just said to do, Liddle's injury could prove a blessing in disguise. Give Reed 3 or 4 games and when Liddle returns then re-assess the situation.

I think he'll be fine for a couple of games and if liddle injury is something more long term then we can scope the market for a legitimate hooker. We shouldn't rush into selecting a back up hooker or recruiting for one.

I doubt that will ever happen and there is also no better way to stunt the development of a young player than playing him out of position. It just isn't feasible to throw Reed to the wolves. He is a talent that fulfils our 7 position for many years to come hopefully after he debuts in 1sts

Our quality depth is in our forwards, not so good elsewhere

Yes .... based of trial and those who didnt play.

Middle forwards - actually look reasonable .. not top tier but not shite .... 7/10 ... will be even better in 2027
Edge forwards - our strength - looking forward to what we can do with structures around them ... 9/10 .. Jake/Ryan very good in the trial and still have SuA/Luc/Egan to come back.
Centres - good first two - depth a bit meh .. 6/10
Wings - What a festering mess of pus that is ... 2/10
Spine - the kind that makes our wing quality look palatable

You have to be realistic when analysing our squad. Especially our current spine.
1. Gutherson, 31 years of age, will do a great job again as cpt but offers little in broken play especially kick return metres. Good quality when injecting himself into a attacking structure.
6. Flanagan, much maligned, played out of position last season as a 7 which wasn't a success. Solid in defence not creative in attack.
7. Atkinson, has not played run on 7 for the last 2 years that I can find. Has a big job ahead of him because of his lack of 1sts minutes especially last season when the Sharks shunned him.
9. Cook, 34 yrs old still has dynamic pace off the mark for short stints. I personally thought Liddle was a better player last season. Cook showing signs of wear and tear but he will put in.
14. Liddle unknown how or when he will come back from that unfortunate grade 3 hammy tear, time will tell.

Realistically that is why we are currently joint favourites for the wooden spoon according to the bookies.

I don't believe for a minute we will get that wooden spoon. Im hoping our young forwards can lay the platform for our go forward and we finish much higher up the ladder than the current professionals are tipping.

Just my views.

Not sure if I've missed something in earlier posts, but can someone say definitively when Kade Reed could be selected in First Grade.
He's been mentioned in a number of suggestions around our hooker problem eg. Kyle to hooker, Kade to half to give Cook a rest.
Good solution for Shield, but from Round 1 .... can we, or can't we?

It's either we buy a veteran for 12mths whos not going to play first grade otherwise.. just has to be serviceable...any injury to either cook or liddle and its first grade game time here...

Or.. we sign a younger one still developing.. harder sell though with Cook looking to extend..

As for whos on market.. I cant be bothered going thru it.. I know Raiders had 3 quality hookers on their books last year, could be a dev position hooker also and we clear a space by promoting one.

All 36 contracted players can play from round 1
Kade falls into the 31 to 36 supplementary group

I wouldn't be playing Reed out of position. I would be playing him halfback with Acko 5/8 and Kyle on the bench to play hooker and be cover if there was an injury to a half. I also don't like the term "throwing him to the wolves" lol It is over dramatic. I have pointed out many a time 17 year old and 18 year olds playing first grade. Look how small Kini is and he excelled at fullback aged 18. If he was in our system, there would have been many posters saying the same thing about him, when he was 18. Reed showed on Saturday night he is ready for first grade. I think he is our best number 7 and would give him first crack at it. If he performs well for the first few games while Liddle is out, then Kyle would be dropping back to NSW Cup and Reed and Acko would be our halves pairing for the rest of the season. A year in first grade this year, would mean he would be more seasoned by next year.

I would be playing Kyle out of position.

After watching Reed on Saturday night, I’d love to see him wearing the 7 in first grade, he already looks like he’d be one of our best. But every opposition coach will send their biggest forwards at him, and I worry that the benefits of having him there now might not outweigh the risks to his longevity. Let him spend some time in NSW Cup, get used to the physicality of playing against men, and once he’s handling that comfortably, then bring him into first grade.
