Round 13 v Newcastle

Good game last night and I was able to watch it live without the blood pressure rising too high. It was pleasing to see our forwards (with help from the backs) consistently reach the opposition 40m and beyond, taking the pressure off our kickers to come up with a miracle kick from within our own forty. Conversely, our defence generally held Newcastle within their own half. I'm interested if other members saw a change in Saints' tactics or was it just ordinary play by the Knights.

Good you were able to watch it live George, I think a line in the sand was drawn against the Bronco's about giving up leads or at least fighting it out. Whilst it was generally a lackluster performance in the 2nd half, it was a generally solid defensive effort, mind you the Knights were not that flash either. Tough assignment next week, the phins will test us on the road. I would really like to see who the wingers are going to be.

Yes Justadragon, it may have been pressure applied by coach Flanno to improve their overall defense, the effort was definitely there. The only other game I have managed to see live at the ground this year was the Anzac Day massacre, so this game helped to partially erase that nightmare.

I was there too Anzac Day. I hope the coaching staff keep replaying that game to the group. In an effort to ensure it doesn't happen again this season

Rewatched and a few main points, why was Jack given such pissweak mins and why did'nt our giant debutant have more. A sound debut by Lawson, strong carries but a bit suss defensively. Again our halves failed to move the ball wide quickly to take advantage of the speed we have to burn now with Sloan and Lawson. The odd occasion it does find its way out wide Holmes and specially Suli hog it.

Did not see much wrong with Sloans game, took pill up as hard as some forwards, contested all bombs within his region, unlucky on the one that was stolen from him and again unlucky with his last no try with the ball being knocked from his grasp as he dived over. Is still not going infield in search of the ball, only reason I can fathom is because he has been told not to. No wonder he looks frustrated, not disinterested as Jodragon says.

KF as the prime play maker makes a good centre. Tho credit where due, his double pump was neatly executed. Must've been watching old footage of Thurston. His long kicking game ordinary, swallowed every time by their f/b or wing under no pressure. Short kicking game better. LKT did a couple of good things but mostly took ball and passed. Is a bit slow with no step to split the defense, missed a few tackles too. Not sure what future position he will play to be honest.

They should just stick with these halves to the end of the season, no more mucking around

let them form a combination, if LKT plays like he did in the second half and runs more (Flanno mentioned this on triple M yesterday) than it challenges the defence and keeps them in 2 minds

That was JDB’s best game in years, he was fantastic. I like that punch of him and Loko or Toby off the bench after 20 mins or so.

Holmes and LKT had a Barry Crocker defensively despite us conceding only 1 try, Gagai and Pearce Paul gave them a bath

Needs to improve because the dolphins can score points unlike Newcastle

Good performance overall though, the kick chase needs to improve too, should be tackling Hamiso/Isaako and Co. as soon as they catch those bombs. Give them no momentum on their play 2 carries

If it makes you feel better at least you didn't splurge on a box for the family to watch them get spanked... Can confirm the hospitality is significantly better since the new stadium at least lol. But still didn't make the drive home any more enjoyable.

I hope giving CT an extra week pays dividends. Him, Lawson & Gutho give us a back 3 who should be strong in the yardage game which helps with our territory game. It'd also help our middles save their energy for defence & more impactful carries. I really hope it's CT for sloan. Lawson to swap sides imo.

Replacing sua is a bit tricky. I think the safer move is replacing him with rfm but he isn't an 80min nrl standard edge either imo.

Maybe have toby playing both edges? Intial 20 on the left then luch comes on and he shifts to the right with rfm taking a breather?

Looking forward to having CT back and seeing him and Lawson go to work, can't see Sloan keeping his spot and Lawson has a great left hand fend I'd like to see him unleash on the right side of the field.

Your probably right about RFM being the safe option but with Toby playing 80 and Luch doing like 50ish I also don't see why we can't give another young fella a crack for 30min on that left edge. Might be asking a bit much but with how they're going I'd like to see it.

This is likely. KF didn't have a really good game but much better than usual. As a result he's safe for the rest of the year.

Kyle’s had 2 ‘good’ games all season, Newcastle and the titans

he’s been mediocre or poor in every other game

Liddle/Couchman/Holmes have all had great seasons. Egan and Tuipolotu before their injuries too

I don’t hate Kyle I just don’t think he’s good enough to make the top 4/win a comp with him in the halves
