Round 3 - DRAGONS vs Eels at CommBank

TheRev

SGI NSW Cup
The season rly does kick off on Sunday.. even losing to the Eels we will be the underdogs.. but then the Titans.. if we havent won by then... the drums will start beating.. and I think Flanno will make changes around Kyle... the 2 games after that in the Cows and Manly, these are all the teams tipped for the spoon.. we need to do more than just be competitive.. Flanno knows it too..

When I think about it, dropping Kyle for LKT is just not something thats happening until were in a darker place.. for right now if im Flanno, weve been pretty much as good if not better than some very good oppositions for our fair share of both games bar that 20min faalago show, and without gutho.. now lets see if that will get us wins against other Non Top-4 oppositions.. too early to throw the bath water out.. but its coming if dont start singing that song.

How dark do you think the losing streak at present is? During that streak has Flanno dropped anyone? Not including those ruled out with injury.

Yep agree Rev, even after 2 Rd's, if you have a look at the ladder the last 6 teams are as predicted. The only abomination is the Broncs and Knights have really swapped positions. So already there are rumblings at Manly and Cows, its make or break for them this weekend and we play Parra , the top of the 6 teams running last. If we lose to Parra we will have the longest losing streak under the JV, and that has happened under Flanno's watch, they are the facts, you can have as many excuses as you like, now there are no more.
How ridiculous is it that we are calling Parra a must win game for us its only Rd 3, but it is. I really hope we can win just to get our season rolling and at least give us some hope, but if we dont, you can imagine what is going to go down.

I just don't get it. He dropped Sione Finau after one game where he wasn't even that bad. I'm fine with or support him laying down hard standards though one game when he wasn't even that bad seems a bit overboard. But then you know who can play one bad game after another after another but still gets picked every week. Not just him. Suli, Sele, Gular, Tu, CT and Kerr as well. In the case of Tu, can't drop him after one bad game even though that it exactly what he did with Finau. Can anyone make sense of it?

It is just plain poor coaching and management with a huge amount of stubbornness thrown in is how I see things. And to top it off, poor recruitment and retention which has been the hallmark of our continuing poor yearly performances for nearly the past decade.
Yes we do have several good ones in our squad, certainly, but we need better but if we cannot get better then train and coach what we have much, much, better. Get the guys fitter than fit, get them more hardened, get them to do drills over and over until they know then like the back of their hands, practise everything with more focus, work on ways to not give away too many 6 agains and short kick outs - just some of the things they have to do over and over.

Attack and defend, attack and defend, attack and defend. Catch, pass, catch, pass, kick, catch, kick, catch - boring I know but got to do it.

And have equal accountability for poor performances.

I don't know much about their pack. Paolo and JDB are passed their best. I know that. Maybe well past it. Other than that, no idea really but obviously it's going to be the area we have a chance to dominate them. I thought our pack was easily better than Melbourne's. In the last 20 min it was their backs running wild.

There lies the shortcomings of our squad Eric. We have said it so many times - here, there and everywhere (ooh another song) - we need depth in speedy players and especially ones that are evasive and quick thinking. If we don't have these fellas in the club then look throughout the world and get them. Don't muck around and give us all this be patient thing because thats been said repeatedly and for too long. Just get the players, that is all we have to do. A big job I know but people are being paid good money to do this sort of thing. This has to be a direction of the Board. Please do not fail to do this.

Yep. I don't think anyone would suggest Flanno's recruitment and retention has been good. Or has been anything but bad. But I have a lot of confidence in Daniel Anderson. A hard operator with a eye for talent. But it'll take a while for his influence to show. Deadwood, as they say, will take at least to the end of this year to get off the books.

That's the way I see it anyway but I'm not an expert.

Anyway, lets see if we can get this thread back on topic.

Yes, sorry there Eric. I got carried away as usual.

Games against the Eels have always been hard fought ones and this one coming up will be no exception.

This may sound silly to most but to my eye in the first 50 minutes our engine room was better than theres. The Storm were looking for answers and found them just before ht with Grant and after Gutho went off and we lost our defensive structures.

Otherwise I believed the longer we were in the dogfight with them the more chance we were of pulling off an upset. Alas it wasn't to be but up until that HIA/Kick out on the full we were up to our ears in that game. That scoreline flattered the Storm.

Didnt realise JDB was actually on the extended bench so may not play at all.. be a crazy call imo, it's a chance to let him rip in and make a point against his old club.. he will definitely fold a few of our boys... more than happy to see him rested.
