Trial Game 1 v Knights

Reed is rightly getting all the accolades but I thought Ryan Couchman was good. So too Tsugranis and LPT when they came on. Buchanan was also much more dangerous in attack than whoever he replaced and defense looks to have improved. Wasn't bad before but his size/strength meant he was beaten a few times. He's bigger and stronger now.

All the young guys were really good aside from LKT who was just ok. Looked like he was trying to match it with Reed in the first half. Flanno might have told him to calm down, make his tackles and play his normal game at half time which I think he did in the second half.
Reed did have a terrific game, and he competes on every play. And Edward, credit to you, your call that Reed is ahead of O’Neill in his development looks spot on.

Kid goes good but minimum 12 months of cup won’t be a bad thing for his development
Totally agree mate, I have just watched the replay again, and as we all know trials lack intensity of proper games, the Shield would be the closest and sometimes even thats debatable. As well as Reed played, him getting smashed every week in 1st's would be a tragedy. He really does need a year in ressies. I really dont want to see another Sullivan on the horizon.

Happy to get 2 wins a bit of confidence going into the season, no injuries would be great. Interesting our defence I thought was pretty good yesterday, they only score a couple of dodgy tries otherwise our unpredictability in shooting up or holding the line on the wing proved to throw them off their game.

Doesn't really matter but watching the replay, I was really surprised the Newcastle player was given the last try. On the replays he looked clearly short. I think he sold it well and the ref was like, "Whatever. It is a trial game after all."

I'm all good with Sele and Leilua having fantastic years, even if they are leaving, Flanno likes the 2yr deals.. likes to keep them hungry... Guler is also on market.. so is Lawrie, thats 'all' of our experienced middles bar KK/Kerr... im sure we would one more experienced hardhead..

If they go too well though, the way Frank Molo did in 2024 when he was on the market.. the offers/headlines start rolling in and it can become a bit of a distraction (esp with Bears/PNG too).. tbf I think we would be happy to extend Sele on ability.. but the injuries probably create too much risk.. I'd back Ando to figure that out.. hes pretty good at assessing value.. question is can we sign better.. I assume we still want 1 more, curious if we are still after 1 middle for 2026 also..

Obviously later in the year we will have a rly good grasp on where guys like CST, LPT, Halangahu, Nick, Coutts etc are at.. maybe some of those are middles by then... all young though.

I'm afraid I can't take credit for that. I don't think Mug Fan will mind me saying it was his tip.
There have been many who have rated Reed very highly and spoke of him being our future halfback on this site on the other forum, in the coaching ranks, and whatever other social media forms. I was one of them. On the other forum, some are praising a very vocal forum member for saying Reed is our future 3 years ago. I do like that forum member too. Now we have the likes of Foran and Cronk and other media personalities talking him up.

I think he is so good he should be our starting halfback in game one of the season. But many on this site want to keep him in cotton wool, so to speak. lol

Many on this site are saying if we get off to a bad start to the season, then Flanno's job will be under pressure or he should be sacked. I say Flanno should be playing Reed at halfback from game one. Play your best team. I am pretty sure Flanno sees Reed as our future halfback, by the start of next season at the latest. Flanno has had to build his team and it was always going to take 4 or 5 years and he also needed a bit of luck. Signing Koloamatangi and Holmes. was a bit of luck or good fortune. The emergence of T Couchman, Egan, Stewart, Reed, Halangahu etc are all a bit of luck or good fortune.

I was talking about Mundine being our future 5/8, when he was playing centres for Harold Mathews, but I can't take any credit for him being one of the two best 5/8's we have had in the last 46 years. The other being Trent Barret. How did I get that one right? lol

I will bet you Coutts doesn't become a middle forward. What are the traits that makes you think Coutts will become a middle forward?

Kade Reeds guts and determination to chase down a runaway Sandon Smith, proved to me he will play Firsts some time this yr. Why wait another yr, the kid is ready for the big stage now. I was one of those that has been pushing his barrel for past two yrs since I saw his emergence in the Red V jumper in Ball Cup. I have seen a heck of a lot of footy players over my yrs and the first yr I saw Kade play I knew he was special. Only very few players know how to take a game by the scruff of the neck, he did that plenty of times that first and the following year and at such an immature age.

Some harsh on LPT over the Smith intercept. I am on Lokos side as he was motionless when he received the ball so he had to think quick to either keep the play alive or be tackled. He chose the second phase play option, only trouble was Smith was on the same page. Our promising giant remains a work in progress and is still young.

Still to watch the full replay but have seen extended footage and jury is still out on Kerr, spilling the leather on his first play did not endear us. Be fair to give him more game time before passing judgement.

How good was it to see a gut flab free Blake Lawrie out there, ran more freely but still lacks the power and agility needed for Firsts. We wanted you to drop 10kg two yrs ago Blocker, so sorry old son time has now passed you by.
