2025 Round 1 vs Canterbury

Saying the Grubs were “noticeably” better. I cannot agree. Has anyone mentioned that Tupouniua’s two tries for the grubs were forward ? Even Matty John’s said his first try was obviously forward. So take them away and we win !….But the intensity for a season opener was awesome….If they play in Vegas next year it will suit them as they like to throw “gridiron” passes.
Forward or not, they created the space to score, passing the ball slightly forward wasn't the difference in scoring, coaching group won't be looking at the ball going forward, they will be looking why the defence was all over the shop...

But the line speed of the grubs….i thought they were offside most of the day…Lots of wrestling and slowing the play-the-ball down…And a few forward passes into the bargain…

The highlight of the match was Liddle’s try ! What an effort it was ! I loved how when he broke into the clear, he then changed direction to score.

So last year we won round one and hope sprang eternal in Dragon Land—-only to be brought crashing back to earth the next week at the hands of Wayne Bennett’s ‘fins.

This year it’s Bennetts bunnies !
Line speed of the dogs was good, i paid attention to it at the game, i noticed especially in our half they came out hard, they were not offside, just more enthused than us, on the other hand we took a couple of steps and waited, we gave them cheap meters, also especially in the first half when we tackled them we were rolling off them too quick, we could have held them for slightly longer, where as dogs held us for that fraction more.

I will be so happy when they finally get gps ball tracking sorted to measure forward passes... so many hookers (such as harry grant) make their careers on throwing the ball very flat, regularly floating forward but not called.. letting their ball runners get an extra meter or 2 every time.

And those short forward passes to rampaging 2nd rowers.. I hate them so much.. the catcher is already through the line, its totally different if they have to catch it before the line... anyway.. life goes on lol.

Our forwards were again so disappointing. It might have had to do with Couchman's injury. Also why was Cook on for so long? In the first 20 he was excellent. In the next 20 average. In the second half before he went off, he was outright bad. For me, Cook starts and plays 30 min then comes back on, maybe as a forward for the last 20 and possibly moves back to hooker if Liddle needs a rest.

Couchman injury through a spanner in the works for sure

Hopefully Stewart takes the opportunity with both hands because he is quite big (tall). A much different body shape to other guys in the side ala Guler and Sele

Sele isnt actually listed as injured (though assumably he is), it certainly is some hella bad timing on top of Frank, Ryan, Lawrie..

Even if we get Klemmer, we are still going to be sh*tting bricks on any future suspensions or injuries..

Really could do with an AFB or a Terrell May right about now 😅
We’ll feel a lot better after a win, it changes everything.
We really do have to get the recruitment spot on for the middles moving forward. If a quality front rower becomes available for 2026 we have to get it done

Last year we had a pretty good run with injuries, this year already we have lost RyanC and both Lawrie and Sele have yet to appear, Frank has gone awol, VFifita is another missing, thats 5 of our middles out already, i said it a few weeks back that we needed 2 props to come into our squad, at the time we didn't have any top 30 positions available and still don't, hopefully Klemmer comes in tomorrow and then we bring in another one, or somehow Sele, Lawrie & ,VFifita recover from injury and find some form or this will be a long season..

Yep I'll be watching really closely to see Flanno does here.. once Franks gone does that free spot go to Lawson (was it promised to him previously?) or does Lawson need to wait for Ravalawa to go first..

And then there is the middle situation... Does Flanno think we need to replace 2 props with 2 props (i.e. Klemmer + 1)?.. the problem is that the +1, is either a 12mth filler (which would almost certainly be someone very average) or.... its a 2-3yr 'who can we find short-term' purchase which is very risky potentially.. taking up a Top30 spot.. which may take us out of the arms race for the next gun prop on the market.. or making it difficult when that next group of CST, Weatherall, DMeafou, Liu etc are needing a spot.. its a real bind we are in.. which Ryans injury has just twisted a knife into..

Is Rava also injured or can't even make reserve grade now?

I think just no room for Ravalawa, too many wingers.. even with Lawson playing ctr..l ben rumble didnt fit either.

1-2 injuries could change that.. but for now..

journos saying Rava has a medical at souths this week.. wouldnt that be wonderful.. rly come out of nowhere also.. after finally 1 week he wasnt in nsw cup.

feels like none of these rava/mmolo/fmolo deals come off by 4pm today.. might be the reality that we have to deal with what we have this weekend, but we will have Klemmer for the storm game (which I am not looking forward too lol).

They've lost Munro for a month, so I can see them needing Rava now. Saw Rava at Kogarah, he's legit bigger than BMM but looks 40 lol. Well they both do lol

I dont think there is a better rig out there! But Rava missing NSW Cup has hopefully triggered something in his psyche to buck up and get better.... but he still has to meet Bennett and prove he has the mindset to be given a souths top30 spot... so im not counting my chickens until that deal is done.. potentially we will be paying a big chunk of the 2yrs but I reckon its worth it to us tbh to clear that spot up... and remove probably a 6th choice winger.

As talented as the young guys are, they aren’t ready for first grade just yet ( Maybe Loko but not Latu/Halangahu)

The dogs reserve grade were cutting through them at several points. Can you imagine that against top 8 sides in the NRL? It would be 40 points a week like tigers last year.

As annoying as it may be, long term we will be much better off by letting them play 20+ games this year in cup against men learning the trade and improving without first grade pressure.

Maybe a late season debut for one of them if they are carving up in Reggie’s
Agree 💯 I said in another earlier post or on another forum, probably the latter that Tonga is a young man growing into his body still, he needs time to grow and more importantly learn his trade so the longer we can keep him in ressies and he continues to improve the better the team and club will be in future years.

Speaking from the view of an old coach you are spot on. You look at how the try was scored, what led to the opposition being in that position to actually score. So I use to look at the time the obtain possession of the pill and how they structured their attack to be in a position to score. Was it eyes up footy or a structured attacking set. Its not just the last pass it's the overall set or sets, and if any player used the excuse but coach the pass was forward then around the field they would go.
