Round 5 v Eels - 3pm

I’m more concerned about the defensive systems than anything else, the systems of the top teams are so elite that when there’s 2-3 changes to a lineup it’s almost seamless and there’s no real drop in quality.

Our system in defence is woeful, they wait at the defensive line instead of pushing up and then when the other teams let the ball sing the retreating defence lets them make 20-30 metres minimum. No wonder parramatta made 70-80m a set in that second half when they spread the ball.

We know the rosters not quite there yet but I expect more from a coaching perspective.
Not baying for Flanno’s head or anything but it’s a big concern for most people I’m sure.
All this is true but still ignoring the elephant in the room. That is, does anyone believe the coach isn't blinded by his love of one player? One player who I'm sure is the best bloke in the world but isn't a first grade RL player.

The issue starts with our previous set in possession. If your making 30 - 40m whilst in possession of the pill then kick from well within your half of the paddock the opposition usually have the upper hand in the next set.

So especially in the 2nd half about the 50th minute mark Parra started rolling down the park. Their play makers especially Brown suddenly found time and space to not only to execute their attacking structures in field position but also play eyes up footy. His stat's showed he ran 19 times for 164m his best effort this season.

When you are back peddling in defence you just can't set your defensive line hence you see either a staggered line or more often than not a defensive line that has not got the time and space to move forwards and meet the ball carrier. Once again our weakest defensive edge is the Su'a/Illias side who missed 9 tackles between them. Last week against the Storm it was only 4.

The running stats show me this is what happened around that 50th min mark. 6 minutes later Iongi scores and the Eels gain confidence and superiority. The rest is history.

Shocking we can't defend a lead against 2 average teams.
Yes that appears to be an issue, yet the previous week we were outstanding. So the trick for the coaching and playing staff is to achieve last week's performance on a consistent basis, make that the norm and not the exception.

Don't forget beat Melbourne without their halfback and reigning Dally M player of the year. Maybe we got a bit over-excited by that win. Flanno did as well.

Watching replay and a loose carry by Klemmer from the kick off and a Holmes fumble both in our end zone plus shoddy middle defense on their best, Dylan Brown, were the reason we lost that.

Contstantly losing the field position battle every game is why we are 1-3 so far. You lose that and more often than not you’ll lose the game.

That’s on coaching, yes the Klemmer/Holmes/Tuipolotu mistakes are costly but we need to take a holistic approach to seeing why we lose rather than blaming referees or ‘errors’ IMO.

Having to defend our tryline for 30-40 tackles a game is not sustainable for long term success

Ditto. And I ask again why does Flanno keep Cook on after bringing in Liddle . For mine we are short a strike weapon when that happens. I'd not have given Cook anymore than a 5/10 from his four games
I thought Cook was good for about the first 40 min in all 4 games. I don't know why he was recruited. I'd be going with Liddle for about 60min and a stop gap solution for the 10min either side of halftime. Even Muhleisen isn't going to do much in attack but provides good service from dummy half and tackles everything that moves.

No way I'd rate Ilias same as Flanagan. Still finding his feet as chief play maker but is trying his guts out. I specially like his affective tackling. 5/10. Know you have a hate on Sloan but like Ilias he is still on training wheels. Not sure if Sloan knows his role. Does Flanno want him as a roving wing by going inside to create something. He did run 135m so better that 3/10.

Absolutely right. RL basics has not changed much from my days. I was taught, and as a coach I passed on the following:

IN ATTACK
1. Complete your sets
2. Obtain field position
3. When tackled in possession land on your stomach, get up quickly play the ball
4. Get to and execute your attacking structures
5. In attack you can play eyes up footy, play what unfolds in front of you
6. Support the ball carrier

IN DEFENCE
7. Keep your defensive line and structures no matter what side of the ruck the opposition is attacking
8. Move up together and communicate with each other
9. Maintain defensive line speed if possible
10. Trust your shoulder defender
11. Minimise missed tackles
12. The most dangerous player is the one in possession of the pill

May have missed a couple but im getting old and forgetting things.

1 of 4. Not a very good start by Flanno. He is the head coach so much of the blame lies with him..
Flanno needs to talk with Benji Marshall to get some tips about being a head coach. They were all over the Broncos last night until a try against the run of play and their halfback being injured. A young team with loads of confidence and speed. If the form of both teams holds, they are going to put a cricket score on us.

Su'a/Illias
Sure you dont mean Sua/Flanagan. I saw him fall off at least three tackles. Ilias defends across the paddock with most of his tackles very affective, specially his last ditch grass cutters. Is this the same edge as Suli whose defense and reads are shoddy, with one poor tackle leading to one of their tries. Is a weapon in attack but a defensive liability as his lateral movement is too slow, ditto CT btw..

I don't hate Sloan or any other Dragons player. Can you honestly say Sloan played ok yesterday? It's more that Finau needs to be in the team so Sloan or CT needs to make way.

As for Ilias, his kick out on the full made him lose a point. Otherwise I would rate him better than Kyle. As for his kicking, gee it would be nice if he had some help with the kicking.

No Su'a/Illias side they stand next to each other in the defensive line. Flanagan/Leilua on the other side, I'm sure it is. Suli well his jersey grab led to a try that was U16 defence. So right edge defence Su'a/Illias/Suli/Sloan = Fox try
2nd try- Iongi same edge their 3rd try was an up and under lottery which CT decided to try and slap it over the db line and failed. Apart from the Storm the Dogs, Souths and the Eels targeted our weakest defensive edge Su'a/Illias.

The issue with Sloan is that his strengths are speed, ball in hand and attacking or as a support the ball carrier.

Being on the wing hes not involved, doesn't go looking for the ball in the middle of the ruck and as we saw didn't finish when he really should have. In my opinion he's in 1sts only because of those strengths.

So if your not playing to a players strengths then the question needs to be asked just why is he out there?

Posted this earlier. Not sure if Sloan knows his role. Does Flanno want him as a roving wing by going inside to create something. I have seen him trying to be involved by following the ball carrier as he used to do at custodian. Hook now Flanno have messed this guy round, so much his head is probably spinning. He needs to be told precisely what his role is.
