SGI NSW Cup
2nd Half Flegg (26-10 Win):
Another try disallowed.. anything thats not straight forward the ref is just calling up... thankfully we scored a few minutes later with Hjalatason off the bench putting a nice grubber through for his hooker teammate in Fagalilo to carefully put down under the sticks... 10-10.

Leikvoll #22 is a big boy, seems hes 21 already so I guess he hasnt until this point been part of the top tier grade. Another guy ive never heard of Braith Plecas #18 has been solid in the middle also.

We had 6 blokes drive a raider back in a tackle and force the ball free.. only problem is Reed came out with a limp left wrist.. either a finger or wrist injury.. trainer saw him and hes staying on.. hope its nothing serious.. he still managed to get a pass on to TPH in the next play who strolled over to put us up 16-10.

Talking about Kade.. he rushes out while defending our goalline, takes the intercept and runs 80m to score under the posts.. great stuff.. 22-10., 19mins to go the half has been all us, we have come out with more energy than the raiders (so far).

We've been defending well all game, we held them up a few times etc... and when we got down their end, Reed got the ball to Hammoud who engaged the line nicely with speed and ball out in front and generated space for TPH to run into and easily put Saifiti away in the corner.. that should be game 26-10 and it proved to be the final score.

The Reed show as normal but his spine was good, all of them contributed the points scored today.. his forward pack wasnt the big name pack but the late callups were all solid.. still not seeing the star in Wetherall we were hoping for.. but its good experience for him.. Ackers has been ok too, very hard to say if any of these guys r the future.. but against a much bigger side it was a great effort.

Wet weather footy is always an unspectacular arm wrestle with poor visibility.

Looks like a second crap game on the trot by us against a side listed as weaker. Only just hanging onto second now. All this chopping and changing must drive Willie Talau up the wall. Cant use that as an excuse, more a lack of depth. Comes with playing guys in comps above their ceiling.

NSW Cup Notes (14-32 Loss):
  • 2mins into the game and on his 2nd run, CT is already limping.. but he plays on and is still there so hopefully ok (he played 80mins in the end).
  • Tough contest.. ofcourse we give Chevy space and he makes a great first run.. plus a few penalties we have given away for ill discipline... and eventually they get to our line and a big 2nd rower Noah Martin runs right past Lawson.. and slips through his tackle in wet slippery conditions. 0-6.
  • Ilias not finding touch by about 10m, right into the wingers breadbasket was quite something
  • Kinda made up for it though, put up a bomb which gave us enough time to compete on their tryline.. in the wet conditions Lawson causes the opposition winger to mess it up and CT picks up the scraps for a try. omg Jonah drills a low one from near the sideline just over the bar 6-6.
  • Webster got wrong footed and lets 1 thru under the posts.. 6-12. Half-Time.
  • 2nd half we start well.. Hutcho to Ilias to Lawson who runs a good line, carries a few over and has no need to pass it to CT.. 12-12.
  • Were up 14-12 with 14mins to go.. but a crazy messy ball going everywhere try from the raiders has them back in front 16-14.
  • More penalties and Lawson goes for a big leap to catch a bomb and misjudges it over his shoulder and they r in again.. 14-22. 8mins left.
  • Well there is no comeback as Noah Martin strolls through Glover, Ramsey and a couple of others to put it down again.. hes the Raiders #11, hes been the problem all game actually, hes too big and strong and slippery in these conditions. his legs just slide right thru our grasp... 14-26
  • 1 last try right on fulltime with a nice grubber thru to Chevy.. not our day.. 14-32..
Trey Mooney having a big chat with a lot of our boys.. either hes just a big extrovert or who knows :p

How sweet it was to finally get one over the much hated Sharks in our decades long local derby.
Allan with weak ball security gifts them their first try, then after Sloan was robbed of a spectacular try saver I was thinking, oh no not again. But then by channeling that Dragons spirit from the past at their spiritual home, LKT splits the line onto Gutho then Hayden for his first NRL four pointer. Then in the 50th min LKT goes to the line lays off a beaut to Hayden onto Gutho and over in the corner for the one that told the Shonkies they were in for a battle. Those two match winning plays showed me LKT is now maturing so am expecting big things from him next year.
As good as LKT was, the win was off the back of mistake free footy, strong in your face defense and a powerhouse engine room led by Jack, Luch, Klemmer, even Blocker turned back the clock. If only we played this kinda footy more consistently.
Hayden did all expected on debut but wondering if he is too small for an outside back, while Jake not given much time to impress. We will see more field time from him next year.

A bit of nostagia at the break with Dragons and Shonkie oldies having a fun game of touch footy.
Like us to keep this jumper for our away matches, more style.

  • Disappointing loss last week but with Parra (3rd) playing Newtown (4th) this week and Newcastle sitting 2nd from last, should be able to get the win here and move clear of Parra or Newtown.
  • #2 is the latest winger to get promoted. Am I thinking of the right person? Do we have two big, fast, teenage wingers a bit too prone to mistakes at this stage? Mistakes or not making them can be trained for and taught but their raw talent can't.
  • Nice to see #12 playing in the backrow and also #15 on the bench. Probably not from round 1 but at some stage of next season, they might be the latest to do what Halangahu and LPT have done this year. Hope so anyway.
  • #13 and 10# also in that boat.
  • What a win last week. Against the runaway top team with a lot of newcomers due to so many moving up due to injuries and won easily. Though it's probably all for nothing. Can't see them making the 5 from here. Though it continues to look promising for next year. Reed and Hammoud in particular will be a strong halves combo in NSW Cup.
  • Still a pretty decent backline. I continue to beleive #5 might go places when he packs on a bit more muscle onto that frame.
  • I know #8 has been given permission to look around, i.e. tapped on the shoulder but I wonder if he might prove them wrong with some big games to close out the year. Hope so anyway.
  • Other than that, #13, 16 and 18, never heard of them before now.
