Not the Perth Bears….

The Chicago Bears !

The team I support in the NFL. They have won one Super Bowl in 1985. In recent years, like the Dragons, they have had hard times. A succession of poor choices as head coach and an overly defensive outlook based on their traditional style of play. They drafted Mitch T. their number one draft choice who was not up to scratch. Then they had the number one draft pick two years in a row. The first year they traded the number one pick to the Carolina Panthers. But part of the deal was if the Panthers finished last they got their number one draft pick the next year.

And that is what happened !

So they drafted Caleb Williams as quarterback. He was patchy the first year but after sacking their head coach they appointed the Detroit Lions offensive coach Ben Johnson as their head coach.

They are currently top of their division and the number one seed for a first round bye in the playoffs.

I am writing all this cause the Bears beat their hated division rival the Green Bay Packers today in one of the more epic NFL games that went to overtime and involved a successful on side kick recovery.

So Dragons we can’t suck forever, eventually things will turn around, we need a more positive mindset and we need some quality players. I would let

Simply put we need a draft system in the NRL and whilst we are it the NRLW, you can see what is happening in both comps.

I'm optimistic Dragons are close to turning it around. Though probably won't be until 2027.

haha I'm a Bears fan too. That OT TD is the best (only?) highlight we've had since Devin Hester's superbowl kickoff return TD. It's been all shit since that moment

I tried watching American football a few times. Just didn't do it for me.

I hope so DC, but you are dealing with a fanbase that has been fed a whole bunch of crap for a very long time. In my heart I believe maybe we are starting to recognize what we should have 10-15 years ago, but until I see results starting to appear then I will truly believe again. ATM im still in the hope zone.

Dont worry mate you are not the only one, We got invited to a game when we were over there. To them its just as about the hype than it is about the game, even their college football is a whole day of entertainment if you could call it that.

It might require another coach. This one is barely even trying to look professional. I know he did very, very poorly at the Titans but if things in the first 6 rounds go as expected, with team selection going as expected, I think Watsford needs to get in contact with Des Hasler. But same as Flanno, strictly as a coach with Dan Anderson having the final say on who is recruited and who isn't.

As for NFL, seems entertaining but just so stop-start. I was told a game takes a couple of hours but with only around 40 min of play. Also they do it that way on purpose to accommodate TV advertising.

It will take a disastrous first half of the season for Flanno to get sacked.
Des did well with Manly but was a disaster for Bullgrubs and Titans. I know he got the Grubs into the grand-final by front loading half a dozen contracts ensuring years of pain in the near future. He left them in an even worse mess than the Titans. We can thank him for that but don't need him returning the favour for the Grubs.

If it was a disastrous first half of the season leading to Flanno's sacking late in the season...... Ben Hornby has served a pretty decent apprenticeship. Don't know if I'd be in favour of that. Undecided right now and it's not as if it will be on the agenda anytime soon.

There has been a real changing of the coaching guard in recent times. Bennett will surely retire soon and Bellamy has been talking of retiring for years. If Flanno was sacked, it would almost certainly be for a new or relatively new head coach. In my view anyway.

The Bears are in ! Aaron Rogers did the Bears a favour leading the Steelers to victory over the Lions, so the Bears will either get a wild card or win the division and may still be the number one seed and get a first round bye.

They lost their first two games but since then have launched a series of fourth quarter comebacks ending in the overtime win against the Packers.

The comeback kids !

They sent the game into overtime after recovering an onside kick, which does not happen much any more. Onside kick recoveries are less than eight per cent.

The Packers’ player took his eye off the ball and fumbled…

The last ten years have been bad for the Bears. Much like the Dragons ! But hope springs eternal and hopefully Saints can turn it around next year.

A bit like the dragons the Bears had a succession of really bad coaches. First was the Fox era. He was hopeless. Then Matt Nagy, who was equally bad, though he did make the playoffs with an 8-8 record. Then Matt Eberflus who became the first Bears coach to be sacked mid season.

Looking forward to the playoffs….

I used to float around various forums. One of my favourite was the Kennel Forum, the Bulldogs forum. The meltdowns were hilarious. I swear every singe one of them hated Hasler.

Ryan Carr? I honestly liked what I saw in the couple of months he took over. But maybe it's a bit soon. He needs to cut his teeth as a head coach in England first.

Billy Slater is another but he's penciled in to take over from Bellamy.

Other than that, no clue whatsoever. Can only hope Flanno can turn it around. The fact is that so far he's only taken the club backwards. I don't know how it is he doesn't get WAY MORE criticism.

On an NFL style draft, it must be a no-brainer! Though how does it work with juniors? If a junior wants out, he is subject to the draft otherwise not? So extend and stay or good luck with the draft? I like that. I think it would suit the Dragons.
