Trial Game 1 v Knights

Hard to know what to make of the game, especially without most of our players:
  • Obviously rly glad Kade had a big first hit out.. will do his confidence wonders.. but you can see how easily things can also not come off.. it can turn quickly. I am thinking they will play him in NSW Cup (instead of Flegg), O'Neill to hooker perhaps... I think after tonight I dont think ONeill can lay claim to the cup 7 jersey despite his experience.. he will fill in where needed.
  • Hooker injuries now: Connor, Liddle, Fagalilo, Hjaltason.. I reckon we might consider buying one for 12mths.. maybe O'Neill can help, just on O'Neill holy sh** his confidence must be in the toilet.. hes pretty experienced, maybe Reeds game has thrown him I dunno... its not easy to come into a game cold either.. ive seen that before.. getting the timing.
  • Thought Lawrie was heaps better with his leaner body.. seemed to handle things well.. def will play a role at some stage, not sure how many minutes.
  • Nick is a psychopath, I love him.. him and Halangahu I think could easily play bench roles whenever needed.. Leilua prob in front at this stage (if hes not the starting 2nd rower)
  • Sloans body looks great.. but I cant believe he finally had his opportunity @1 against reserve graders and he just did the same stuff.. its like he goes looking for knock ons or scoop ups and misses.. it hurts so much to give the ball back like that... and unless its a clear run to the line, hes rly doesnt know how to beat someone to score.. cant stand it tbh.. just play Tu or Fale or Heidke out there, CT if he didnt injure himself atleast helps with carries but yeah..
  • Felt like Fale was strong but went missing with his workrate, honestly I thought he mustnt be on the field.. it was always Tu doing the carries.. thought Tu would be faster when he got that intercept.. but he did enough... I mean 5m closer to the goals would have been nice but he was good.
  • Bit disappointed LKT didnt do more, hes the experienced half there and didnt rly contribute until the final try assist.. but maybe partially because Kade had the whip hand tonight and mostly played right.
  • Thought Kerr was alright, u can see his fast play the balls r his strength.. but someone else needs to do first hitups, Sele strong but ofcourse dont want to pin hopes on him staying healthy.
Everyone did alright, it was a trial though and giving out opponent all that early ball, we were lucky not to be punished, but credit where its due.. looking forward to seeing Atkinson next week for sure.. I know there is going to be a lot of pressure from fans for Reed to play.. but chill and if he plays later in the year thats great.. but u saw how wrecked he was after about 45mins, errors started coming in.. cause they will run big boys at him ALL NIGHT LONG.. plus he needs protection.. and that can cause other holes to form.. its one thing about Kyle he's actually strong in defence. But look.. if Cook gets injured just imagine the mess we would be in..

Just happy to get a win though, even if the Charity Shield goes poorly, we have something positive, maybe a team song not sure.. and something incase vegas doesnt go to plan etc.
Good summary

Our wing options are not great ... it is getting to a point of playing Nick int he centres so Val can play on the wing. It is that questionable.

Get on the phone to whoever knocked us back before and ask again.
dont love any of them.. I think we tried to sign a proper one.... I mean we havent seen Fale on the wing yet.. I dunno why he did so little work tonight though.. but maybe he would if moved out there.

honestly it should be the easiest position to sign.. any bloke who didnt quite make it at fullback or ctr usually ends up on the wing.. i know there is some speciality there but its one of the easier spots.

Or Buchanan or Heidke playing in the centres with Holmes on the wing. I know at this stage of his career Holmes has more to offer at centre but if we are stacked for centres but lacking for wingers.......

A few players are unhappy.
We may pick up a couple of young OBs but more likely next season.

Let us know what you thought of Rokko Walker when you get the chance to see the game mate.

Liked what I saw, nowhere near the same level obviously but gave me Similar vibes to a teenage Reece Walsh with the agility and risky ballplaying

Wing options are really poor. Pity you can mix Sloan’s speed with Tui’s bulk. Tui is a big no from me for Vegas.

Apart from Kade who was amazing, I thought Sele and Ryan Couchman were the pick of the rest.

Here's the million dollar question, we all said we wanted pressure put on our halves, well in just one game that pressure is quite evident. If the kid has what it takes it will be extremely hard to keep him out. Agree with what TheRev TheRev has said, he will need to be protected. Either way it will be a big call when it happens, until then lets hope he kills it in ressies and continues his trajectory.

Yep, agree, I thought he was still pretty conscious of pulling those hammy's, just dont know who is likely to take his place, next week should paint a clearer picture.

lol..

Let us know what you thought of Rokko Walker
When I reflect on the game today.. Walker probably had as much of an influence as Ah Kee did last season in the same role (i.e. he was the source of every effective attacking movement).. but Ah Kee is a 'genuine' playmaker.. Walker was more of an outside back using his pace to create problems.. maybe a little bit like Sharp playing 6 actually.. rly a fullback but enough pace to cause problems.

Definitely does seem like he could make a cracking winger though, maybe a fullback.. maybe he could do it sooner rather than later, but hes 16 I believe.. would have to be 3yrs from 1st grade best case.. if we do think hes going to be a fullback longterm though, we probably should let him develop there.. but maybe they feel its just the best for the team, and he would still be learning useful skills for sure in that position that will help him later @1.

That said he would be coming through at a similar time to Ollie.. Ollie tbf might end up @ctr, but as of right now hes definitely the best 1 in the system...

Note: I dont think Saukuru will be a longterm option, hes probably in the mould of a young Trai Fuller or maybe if you saw Jack Talbott last year in the Laurie Daley Cup.. an absolute enigma with ball in hand.. but that doesnt fly in higher grades, you have to sort the defensive stuff out too... but who else is the U21 fullback I guess once TPH gets too old... maybe he fills the jersey for 1-2yrs...

Kade will develop nicely over the next year or two, as his body matures and bulks up his front on defence will improve, i thought Sele was good, he pushes through through the line every hit up,I'm also a fan of Hutchinson, no prisoner taken with his runs and good leg drive as well, he would have made some good PCM, You can put a line through Lawrie, he shouldn't see first grade again, Sloan is Sloan, again nothing has really improved, lets the ball bounce from a kick off, the try he scored he should have dived, not a one hand put down, he did the same last year i think and lost the ball after the tackler hit his arm, just before that try he scored had another opportunity, just stopped and turned back in, should have gone for it. One thing i like, start of the game we were pegged in our 20 for the first 10 or so minutes, heaps of defence but we handled it and then scored when we had a chance down the other end, all in all considering how many 6's again's Gough blew against us, we did well..
Who are your wingers for RD 1 Vegas?
