Not dragons related but FMD Haas to the Bunnies is a huge move

Obviously Wayne Bennett as the coach helps recruit. Would love to know what he’s getting paid
If it's more than 1.25 million, and I'd bet it is because Broncos were apparently offering 1.2 million, I'd prefer KK for the million the Dragons are apparently paying.

KK leaving is most likely what opened the door for them to sign haas

As for the KK and Haas comparison, Haas may end up as the greatest front rower ever while Keaon has proven in a smaller sample size his output in the middle is fantastic

The only negative from a rival perspective is that Haas has played huge minutes in the middle since 18/19 YO and that will take a toll on his body.

KK has played mostly edge his whole career and didn’t start playing NRL anywhere close to the same age as Haas so in theory Keaon should have longevity even if we play him as a 60 minute middle for his entire 5 year contract

Not many people understand what you have highlighted. High impact week in week out takes a toll now matter how fit you are.

It will be interesting to see if Bennett can win another Premiership which he and Souths are desperate to win. While I appreciate his services to us in 2009 to 2011, I don't think that he will win another premiership before he retires. My gut feeling. Haas is and will be a force wherever he plays and he will help Souths make the finals/grand final but won't win.

So that's why old Wayne couldn't, and frankly speaking, with this I think we can say he may not have wanted to re-sign KK.

That's okay. Good for him. We will just have to be content with T and R Couchman, LPT and KK. Actually, I wouldn't trade that front row rotation with whatever Bennett will have at Souffs including Haas.

What we need now is this sequence of events:
  1. Donkeys let Haas go immediately in order to upgrade and extend Walsh and a few others.
  2. Souffs release KK to Dragons immediately in order to make way for Haas.
Sneaky old Wayne was saying just a few days ago how happy he is KK is still with Souffs for another year. We can take that as an admission he is working on a plan to send KK our way ASAP.

I agree 100% GCRV. Haas is a phenomenal athlete, but for where we are right now, and considering the likely cost difference, I think KK is the type of player we actually need in the short term.

Is this anything to do with recruitment and retention?
Yes.

When I started the quiz, I said it was indirectly related to SGI.

Whether it qualifies for this particular thread, it’s hard to know.

If you let me know the ambit and scope of the thread, then I will have a better idea.

But there’s been some kind & courageous pm’s.

It makes me wonder if Souths already had Haas lined up when Koloamatangi signed with us? I also wonder if we had a real go at signing Haas? We were said to be going big for Tino. As much as I rate Koloamantangi, Haas is the best prop in the game and probably the best prop I have seen play the game.

100% they did, this deal has been simmering for a while, it was only the Bunnies fans that were upset at losing KK, didn't really hear a peep from the staff. Classic WB.

Haas said in a Foxsports article, "I need a change". Who would have thought he needed a change, after winning the comp with Brisbane last year? I was wrapped about us signing Koloamatangi, but I wish we signed Haas. If I was a Souths fan, I would have been very disappointed about losing Koloamatangi, but then signing Haas would more than made up for the lose of Koloamatangi. I wanted us to sign Koloamantangi ever since seeing him fill in at prop, in a game where he started in the second row and was moved to prop for most of the game after one of their props went off injured very early in the game. I have wanted us to sign Haas ever since seeing him debut off the bench.

Since signing Roy Asotasi, Souths have made some really big signings, with Sam Burgess, Greg Inglis, Latrell Mitchell and now Payne Haas.

Signing Haas would now give them 3 players on a 950K or more on their books with Latrell and Murray both being other 2. They also have Wighton on a reported 800k and he was said to knock back a mil from Canberra. Then add David Fifita who was on 1.2 mil at the Gold Coast who is said to have taken a "pay cut" to play for Souths. So that makes Fifita and Wighton both taking less to play for Souths. I would say they have 4 marquee players in Haas, Murray, Mitchell and Fifita. Easts, Melbourne, Canterbury and Souths look to have bigger salary caps than the rest of the teams or look to "manage" their salary cap better than the rest.

We apparently have Gutho and Leilua on 900K and Holmes on 850K. Koloamatangi will be on a mil next year for us. He pretty much covers Leilua's contract. We will have another 1.1 mil with Lawrie and Slone off our books.

I guess Haas would have been better but I'm perfectly happy with signing KK. He'll compliment our pack so well. Perfect fit.
