Dragons v Dogs Round 1

Credit them for great line speed and towing the line of what the ref accepts

I’ve been begging for us to defend like that and pen teams in their own half

Look at the tackled in opp 20 stats, it’s a great indicator of who’s going to win the game based on dominating field position.

I think Canterbury had 36 to our 9.

4 times as many tackles in our red zone!!!

In a one off game it’s fine but if we allow that over 27 rounds we aren’t gonna win 13+ games which is what’s required to make finals

So disappointing, I’m not gonna bash Shane Flanagan today because the reffing was genuinely awful
I was gonna rant about him and his boy but self-control got the better of me. I'll just say I hope he has some new tricks up his sleeve because if they play like that for the whole season, won't lose many games by a lot but won't win many games.

So the stats tell the story, a 9 - 3 penalty count against us which ultimately cost us the game. We didnt get much change from the referee today.

On a positive note our completion rate was excellent 85%. However we most definitely lacked penetration in attack, the Dogs ran for 500m more with ball in hand, possession was fairly even.

Negatives, our kick return again very poor 102m v Dogs 298m so no improvement, in fact the least of all teams playing today.

In attack once again our new halves combination just won't run the ball. 9 runs between them for a very paltry 51m compared to the Dogs 31 runs for 296m. So again no improvement in those two very important areas whilst in possession.

In my personal opinion you can't be a competitive top 8 team if you are so predictable in attack that the opposition knows you are not going to straighten your attack and take on their line on the edge of the ruck. Cook tried from dummy half 9 runs, 89m to do so, but our 6/7 shied away from that responsibility.

Positives, in the forwards, Toby Couchman was outstanding, this kid has a big motor, 18 runs , 171m, 53m post contact. The backs Gutho and CT were the standouts. Gutho 23 runs for 204m and CT 22 runs for 216m.

To my eye we just lacked attacking structures in fact it was about the same everytime we held the pill and this allowed the Dogs to compress their defensive line.

An arm wrestle in the end which very nearly got us an unexpected win. But until we can offer more variety and speed in attack we won't be playing semi finals football again this season. Can't fault the teams effort or commitment but we need more in attack.

Defence was good missing only 29 tackles. But unless you can turn defensive strengths and have a good balance with our attacking strengths we just won't win enough games.

Next up doesn't get any easier at home against the Storm.

Good appraisal, as for our attack well once again we are at the halves to create, which no such thing today. So how many games do we go with more of the same before its too late to make a change ? Would LKT have made a difference, who knows ? Well, we will get to hear how we competed and you know if we play like that we will win more games. I asked for us to be competitive and we were, where to from here I don't know.

Unfortunately Jodragon it's the same old story, yes we try damn hard in defence and guts but you cant keep doing this every game it wears you out.

The 1 to 7 overall needs a big shake out, we need difference and speed. Reed has that difference, let's see how he goes in the cup side, we cant wait much longer or we will end up like last year.

That 1st try Preston scored should never have happened, far too easy like last year, too many dumb penalties and still we lose by 1 point.

I recall the coach saying in the interview with Matty Johns, " Atkinson has fitted in very well, one of his main strengths is his running game and I will be taking advantage of that strength ". 7 runs for 36m. Your halves need to compliment each other. It should get better but until one of them run the ball we are going to struggle in attack

I think Atkinson was running the ball from 6, maybe that is where he should be, I wont say who should be 7.

Agree , you make your own luck in games and sometimes you get lucky but any luck we had was extinguished by that display by the ref and the lop sided penalty count

T Couchman, brilliant today and our best on ground for us.
shout outs to Cook, Stewart, Sele, R Couchman, Leilua, Su’a, Gutho.

Guler and Kerr, need more from both of them.
Should have found a way to win that one, shame cause it was 2 points that were there for the taking.

Any finally, G Atkins can go and get farked. Still can’t believe that NRL golden boy Critchon didn’t get 10 in the bin for that high shot on Tu. The penalty on Leilua was soft and don’t get me started on the strip penalty on R Couchman with 1 min to go

Be interesting to see what comes out of the referee review performance meeting. He should be dropped
