Dragons v Dogs Round 1

I actually like Trai Fuller, age might be a factor why teams don’t sign him

We need to start thinking about the centre position

We have 2 centres who aren’t gonna be resigned beyond their current deals IMO so they’ll both be gone at the end of next season

Maybe that’s why the Averillo signing is necessary. That versatility is so valuable

This was in the DT.

It's true. This needs to be talked about more.
Mick Ennis is the one that has been hired to coach the attack in the guys. He better do something really quickly to get the guys winning by scoring lots of tries. Young needs to maintain his coaching of the defence like it was against the Dogs in every game. But, yeah, more fruitful attacking raids are needed often when in possession. Practise more off loads and doing dummies more often. Even little grubbers ahead just to vary the attack. Run the lines of half to back rower then centre, fullback chiming in to make the extra man and then to the winger to score. Do this many times in the attack with some subtle variations.

Attack, attack, attack - practise, practise, practise.

If you cannot score you don't win and if you score, score more than the opposition and make sure the points gained are defended making sure everything to be done is done resolutely.

This might have been one off due to the narrower field. Though attack was just as bad in the Charity Shield. We all know what by far the biggest problem is.

The second is the lack of speed though if Tu can keep improving, the speed situation is slowly getting better. Now with Holmes and Tu. Atkinson is no slouch for a halfback as well. If Buchanan plays well in reserve grade, he might need to replace Suli who doesn't offer much in attack or defence.

Fullback:
  • Trai Fuller does have some Ben Barba vibes.. probably more interesting than Drinkwater, Tracey or Kennedy
  • I believe the big name options r now all locked up now, Koula, Purdue etc (unless there is someone they have in mind who wants a release).
  • I do see TPH as a young Trai Fuller, but hes shorter again, much younger and if he does get there, I dont think its any time soon.. the poor lad gets absolutely laid out too, multiple crushers per game and a few head highs also.. he gets back up, but surely one of these days someone sends him to hospital.. should happen less in the higher grades perhaps where there are more cameras.
Centre:
  • Holmes and Suli both here for 2 more years.. thats a long way away.. Holmes rly starting to worry me with his injuries, he is our best back and on big coin... we need a 3rd ctr string option we can trust.
  • Heidke literally could smoke them both within 12mths as our best ctr option.. but hes been injured constantly also, and I mentioned before resilience is important.. has he just been unlucky? Dunno.. but he needs to put some games together asap.
  • Burton & Walker could end up a ctr or wing imo, but wherever it is, thats too far away to seriously consider
  • Timmins I thought was a maybe but has been injured for ages which will set him right back
  • Fale is the other, im still not convinced hes a ctr but would like to see him play some more cup.. but tbf he has played a fair bit of cup already
  • Feagai maybe is a fill-in for now.. and Buchanan if promoted to top 30 as Mug said, may well get an opportunity soon.
5/8:
  • Ah Kee has still not extended so I rly dont want to factor him into anything until he shows hes interested in having a career here.. I cant speak more highly of him, but not getting my hopes up yet + even if he stays hes too far away to factor into any 1st grade decisions.
  • I think Gutho could move in there to partner Atkinson for 2027.. assuming we do sign the fullback we want.. I guess he could also cover centre.
  • Atkinson I think is in our halves regardless.. whether its 6 or 7.. and having a 1st grade level boot is important, crazy to try and play this game without it, I would have taken anyone in a Douehi, Burton or a Savala.. whoever if they can kick long.. but maybe Atko is 'good enough' in that regard.
  • As for LKT, I havent ruled him out, he is 20y10m of age.. he will fill out a bit and get better defensively.. he looked very good in U19's... him and Reed.. but I did feel like the step up to 21's and NSW Cup, was quite noticeable that without more acceleration, he couldnt get up to full speed like he did in 19's where the defence was slower.. and it means his running threat isnt the absolute weapon it was.. combine that with an average kick length, and im not super excited about him.. but.. he could definitely do a role in say 12mths.. but I'm not anchored either way on him.

He’s too limited to even bother with to be completely honest mate. Doesn’t move the needle

Plus in a years time when he would be here Reed IMO will be ready to go in first grade

We’re just in an awkward spot at the moment because everyone knows Kyle’s not good enough to play as a half in the NRL but Shane’s gonna play him there anyway this year. His lack of threat is accentuated by the lack of strike at fullback to cover his deficiencies

LKT probably signs elsewhere for more opportunity at the end of this year (If we extend Jasais Ah Kee then I’m happy to let LKT go)

We are in a tough spot because we’ve just signed Atkinson on 500k a year and we’ve got a stud halfback coming through so DA and Flanno must be thinking fullback is the spot they need to sign a Marquee but who’s available now that Koula’s extended with manly and Bula prefers to stay with the tigers

Tricky situation
I know who is available for fullback next year and is still officially unsigned beyond this year. He played a bit there on Sunday, when Drinkwater was off the field injured and made a good run from a kick return if my memory serves me correctly. He could also be a top 5/8 to pair with Reed, if we were to produce or sign another top line fullback.

Agree with what is said in this article. W do lack an exciting X factor player who can close out a game. We have lacked this for years unfortunately. Daniel Anderson needs to sign one up quick smart. Other clubs' coaches can see where our weakness is like we can so it is an easy job to defend against us. They know that we lack pace in the backs and halves and would be an easy job to stop us from scoring tries.

To Anderson, Flanno, Ennis, Young, Watsford surely you guys can see this a mile away. Don't delay, fix it up. You have the job to do this. Spend some money and get the best, that should be your aim for heavens sake. Our 2025 signings and many of our established guys don't cut the mustard anymore - the younger ones are showing great promise but need more ammunition to help win games. Worried that Val Holmes will be missing many games and if he does play, will cop injuries as his body has reached the stage when things are not as dependable. Same goes for Gutho and Cook.

We are waiting for players like Reed to mature and the aim is to use him in a few first grade games later down the track in 2026 but a player like him is needed now. Maybe not him but some player who is sitting behind a game winning half elsewhere.

We need players with good footy playing in them but also have speed. Speed in the halves, centres, wings and fullback. We have lacked this for years - Sloan, Dufty, Field, Gasnier, Morris Brothers stand out as our speedsters.

Good post. I agree wholeheartedly. Jenkins would give us a bit more speed and agility on the wing and can cover centre or even fullback if needed and would be rather cheap. Purdue would give us some speed and X factor at fullback or 5/8 and can cover centre.

I have previously mentioned Fletcher Sharpe who is contracted to Newcastle until 2028, but I doubt they will let go, but he would fit the bill perfectly for a fullback or 5/8. He does look really good. This year, I would pick Sharpe on the bench for NSW as he can cover anywhere from 1 to 6. I would even consider partnering him with Cleary in the halves for NSW this year or picking him at fullback for NSW, he is that good.

Who else can others suggest we sign to give us more speed, agility and X factor in the backs?
