Great post, Dave. I remember Warren Ryan once saying that no coach wins a premiership without star players, and that some coaches still can’t win even when they have them. He was probably thinking along the similar lines as you. Or he might just have been slipping the knife into Roy Masters after the 1984 grand final.
Yes, thanks George. Aaah, Warren Ryan. He had a chequered career winning several grand finals and losing others when at Newtown, Canterbury and Balmain. He was good support in the ABC Commentary booth over many years until listeners started to complain about things he was saying so he and David Morrow were stood down which to me was a pity. That was a disappointing loss for the Dragons in the1985 Grand Final against the Dogs when Roy Masters (one of the best journalists/columnist we could have) was our coach.

I wish that we had star players now. How great would it be to know that we would have every chance of winning games if the team had several of them. We lack class which sux.

Our only other options for the halves are King Togia and Reed. Flanno has stated he doesn't want to rush Reed and when he does pick him, he wants to keep him their and not drop him. King Togia's defence was found out last year. I also don't think he will become a regular first grader at our club or any other NRL club. Gutho to 5/8 is our only other option, but we don't have a topline fullback to take his place.

So who do you think Flanno should be playing in our halves instead of Kyle?

I do want better than Kyle, but who else is there right now?
As was previously mentioned Frank, put Gutho in there, something, anything to get more out of the halves, have LKT on the bench if something happens but you have to have someone helping Atkinson, we need another point of difference or it will be just as it was with Hunt, extremely easy to shut down.

TODD PAYTEN AND ANTHONY SEIBOLD WON’T MAKE IT TO MID-SEASON

Following scrutiny across the 2025 season, Manly’s Anthony Seibold and North Queensland’s Todd Payten have failed to silence doubters across the opening two rounds of the season. Manly have begun the season winless following a golden point loss to the Raiders, before a humiliating 36-16 loss to the Knights on Sunday. Seibold’s side let in 36 points to a depleted Knights side, who lost both Dylan Brown and Kalyn Ponga to injuries during the game. The loss doesn’t help Seibold’s case given he was already in hot water following a disappointing 2025 season, which saw the side go from top-four contenders to tenth place finishers. Seibold isn’t the only coach under the hot seat, with Todd Payten continuing to hang on by a thread following the axing of three Cowboys assistant coaches in 2025. After missing the finals last season, North Queensland would have been hoping to start strong, however two easy defeats does not bode well for their finals hopes or Payten’s future with the club. Payten’s spot looks particularly precarious following a 44-16 loss to the Tigers, which could see the coach make an early exit, before finishing out his sixth season at the helm. If the Cowboys are unable to seal a win against the Titans this weekend, they will be in serious danger, especially as they are set to face Melbourne the following week. The big test for both coaches will come in round seven when the Cowboys and Manly face, in what could be a battle for their jobs.

Flanno's superpower isn't in being a coach like Bellamy or Cleary but in avoiding scrutiny. I don't get how these 2 are under pressure but Flanno isn't.
