Kyle Flanagan & the coach

He would have to be a desperate signing in my opinion.

Wow, we have certainly come to that ugly part that we have had many times in the past decade in a big, big way. Flanno not wanted now by most. I've even convinced a buddy of mine who I've known for over 52 years and is a mad Dragons supporter, and he now agrees, that the club has not been in a good place even with Flanno at the helm.

Years and years of frustration, that many of us have been patiently and hoping for better outcomes, is again with us. I was pinning a lot of hope that Flanno would be the answer when he agreed to coach the players at the Dragons after the Board sacked Griffin (I bet Hook hasn't stopped laughing for the past 2 and a bit years). I can visualise his gleeful face that the fans are turning on Flanno just as he was.

Whether or not it will be this year or sometime next year, Flanno will be gone if this current losing trend continues. In my opinion, the Board should be making a decision based on would Flanno as head coach bring us sustained success for many years to come or will it be almost making the top 8 or ending up 8th and then the following year drop back to the bottom 4. They must want someone who can deliver yearly best results - consistent wins and ending up always in the top 8. That should be their ultimate goal for success. Is there one person who can deliver us with wins consistently? Bloody hard now.
I'm not as negative as most. Club has an excellent, young pack even now but better still next year. An excellent, playmaking halfback who must come into first grade next year. Then we have very promising outside backs like Buchanan, Heidke next year in particular and then Burton the following year. Next year will still have Holmes who can play anywhere from 1~5. And finally, we are in a pretty good position as it relates to the cap.

This year is a bit of a write off already but at least we can get to see how well Halangahu, Nick T, LPT and others handle first grade. The first of those in particular is a really serious backrower IMO!

So Eric are you saying that Flanno will be the man next year with this supposedly great team. And are we to just accept that the Dragons will be lucky to win a few games this season. And we are the laughing stock of the NRL. A couple of things here we still await to see some of those juniors in 1st grade and from what I have seen of Buchanan I’m not impressed with. So how do we know anything. it’s obvious Flanno has lost the sheds and now he’s losing the fan base. The only ones that can’t see what a shit show we are the supreme untouchables, they were , are,and always will be weak as piss.

I see it pretty much the same as you do. We will be much better positioned next year than when Flanno took over and better again the year after.

I keep saying I want to see Luciano at prop. He is our biggest forward in the first grade team. I think he, Koloamatangi and Toby would form a great prop rotation, with Pacifiki Tonga if he stays. We have the likes of Sua, Egan, Hanangahu, Ryan Couchman and Nick T as edge backrowers. That should mean pushing Leilua to prop.

We do need to sign some good outside backs. I have named the ones I would want to sign if I was in charge of recruitment. From what I have heard of Burton, I would like to see him playing first grade next year, either fullback or wing. I am starting to think Tanah Boyd could be a very good signing. His form this year is surprisingly excellent. It would give us 3 halves to choose from and a back up one if one is injured or suspended. We could even play Reed at 5/8 with Boyd halfback. In Supercoach, for some reason, Reed is listed at a 5/8. If he was paired with Boyd, it could take pressure off him in his first couple of years entering first grade. I do see Reed as a halfback, but he does have a good running game and speed as well, which is required in a 5/8.

No, no. Flanno is done IMO. I can't see how he can make it back when after all this time, this is where we are. I think there is plenty to work with for a new coach. That's what I mean.

Genuinely in recent memory how many coaches have come back from a position that Flanno is in?

It’s untenable now, their just wasting time sacking him in 6 weeks instead of present day

The only time I’ve ever seen a sitting duck coach pull it out of the fire and turn it around it Adam o brien with Newcastle in 2023, they were sitting 14th and then all of a sudden reeled off 10 straight wins and finished 5th

Got himself a new contract and then sacked 2 years later because he’s not a very good coach

He’s coaching Canterbury’s attack right now and it’s the worst in the league

Gerard Condon reporting Flanno’s time is up and he’ll be sacked. Just a matter of when

The sooner the better. And it's not just a waste of time to give him more time before sacking him. It also gives him the opportunity to make the situation even worse.

Benji Marshall has done very well at recruiting. Many of the players he recruited said things along the lines of they were big fans of Marshall growing up and wanted to be play under him. Most, if not all those players were of Polynesian decent. Last year, when there was talk of Marshall being sacked. Many of the players threatened to walk out on the club if he was sacked. Then Wests extended Marshall's contract after that happened. If Willie Talau was to coach us, he may be an attraction to players of Polynesian decent, like Marshall has been.

Agree. The situation is just as bad as it was with Hook. Once again we have a coach who has come to the end by not knowing what to do with the Dragons or their junior base. We should have been so far ahead of other clubs with the juniors we have available but once again they get mismanaged or we have a coach who doesn’t believe in them and wants certain players from yesteryear to play in today’s modern game. The balancing act of trying to protect your son at all costs to the detriment of the team should have been pulled up immediately instead we let it go on with feeble excuses. No one wants to see a coach fail but the members don’t want to see the club set up for failure either, which is exactly what we have had for 16 years now. I love the Dragons and I remember the past with our history but I want to see a future, a purpose and be proud. What I saw a few days ago was a disgrace, a lifeless soul searching entity. Flanno couldn’t do it, I don’t know who can but that is no reason to remain stagnant and at least try to do something. Their has to be a sense of pride given back to all the supporters because right now it’s a sense of frustration, anger and disillusion.

There was a video clip of Marshall giving it to the players before the season started. I would have liked to see one from the Dragons, hopefully it will be of the coach getting sacked.

Why did Seibold get sacked?
I don't know why Seibold got sacked. But Woolfe and Ryles went 0-4 last year, and Payten went 0-3. All kept their jobs. My point is that nothing magical happens just because you have lost some games. Manly thought Seibold's position had become untenable. Could be because of fans and/or players, etc. being demonstrably unhappy. Or because they couldn't bear the media scrutiny any longer.

Typically coaches who’s results/performances worsen overtime get sacked

At least with Ryles and Woolf their teams look cohesive and without a doubt have improved in their time as coaches

You can also credit the administations for recruiting and retaining well to help them on an upward trajectory

There has to be an understanding that while Flanno is likely to be sacked within the next month or so, the admin need to be under pressure for their decision making, we need to ask why and how did it get to this point?

Who decided to let go of great young players and sign over the hill veterans?

Does the next Coach need to have far less influence in recruitment and retention and focus on just being a coach first and foremost?

Why do players want to leave? (Lomax/Hunt/Finau Latu etc.)

It's got to this point because enough fans (not me) were Flanno beleivers. If there had been a vocal "Flanno out" movement last year, he would never have been extended till 28 and would probably been sacked by now.
