I think the answer will become apparent against Newcastle, im expecting a far closer game and more connection with our attack.. and led by Gutho at the back.. I cant be sure that we're gonna win it though..

Conversely if we really don't show any signs of improvement, it's hard to imagine we could slide any further backwards.. but like if its clear that Dean isnt have cut-thru.. and then into Penrith etc.. that's when I think we can have conversations about 'risky' coaches... I dont think the board will have a bar of that while Deano is still a real option.. I dont think they would be ready.

And TBF maybe the illusion of Cheika is an illusion.. but what I actually hope we would get is 'Richo light' i.e. if we cant have Richo, I want someone to come in with a lot of charisma, the ability to cut thru the bullsh*t, articulate what he needs, convince the right assistants and players to come onboard.. sell his vision to the board.. I want some gravitas, I want some pulling power.. I dont think were getting that with any of those other options.. like young, hornby, wallace etc.. I do love the idea of Talau but he probably needs to be assistant first... and I dont know what to think of Arthur..

I do hope they atleast wait till after Newcastle.. surely we have to see something from him... or 1 or 2 yrs absolute max.. farrrrkkk.

at the very least make the payout f*** all if we dont win a few footy games.
Needs to show something to warrant the full time job ......... They can wait until the seasons end then make the call ........ Yes he has taken the team that has hit rock bottom , but they have to not make the same mistakes as they have before ........

Surely they are going to at least do a serious recruitment process for a new coach. Not the worldwide kind just to find the answer was right here all along as per Brian Johnston for CEO. We need quality and change.

Why is anyone surprised, I have said all along the job is Young's :) I was right it would be him last time and im 99.9% sure im right this time :). Just give it to him anyway, hes probably the best of a bad bunch.

Funny that the best available coach from around the world to coach our club just happens to be an old boy who’s already in the building and dads still kicking around at board level

Poor organisations make poor/lazy decisions like this and wonder why it doesn’t work out 3 years later

For our own sake let’s hope young’s a genius and we don’t burn another 3 years with a bum HC

History reveals that ex players coaching has been disastrous for our club. Young is not the answer.

Agree Joe. Who do you think we should go for?
I mentioned on another post that if the club wanted a clean slate and wanted a person with an aura around him and could possibly attract other players because he is an unknown x factor and take a leap of faith then Chieka could be the man.

If you after a tried and true coach who is coaching well at the moment in the SL then Arthur's is your man. He is coaching Leeds Rhinos and they are currently 1st.

If you wanted a ex player then I would rate Hornby above Young as he is learning his trade from St Benny.

Agree with those, thanks Joe. Just hoping that whomever is the chosen one that he is given a decent chance to make us great again. We cannot afford to fail again. It will just be demoralising and heartbreaking for us all if that happens.

If we are honest here who was the last coach we had that really had the ability to attract quality players who were not past their prime? Was it Bennett?

Pathways will produce quality players but very rarely in all positions and all at the time needed.

Who can our current interim coach attract? Time will tell. Otherwise we are doomed from the unlearnt lessons of the past. Just my views

Bennett didn't "attract" many. He brought in several but they were on the outer at their clubs. Gaz was really the only one who was in demand.

To support your post Chris (which I have googled) -

"During his tenure as head coach of the St George Illawarra Dragons from 2009 to 2011, Wayne Bennett reshaped the roster, bringing in several key players who were instrumental in the club's 2010 premiership success.
His key signings and recruits included:
  • Darius Boyd: Brought over from the Brisbane Broncos to play fullback, becoming a pivotal part of the 2010 premiership team.
  • Michael Weyman: Recruited from the Canberra Raiders to strengthen the front row.
  • Jeremy Smith: A New Zealand international forward signed from the Melbourne Storm to add toughness.
  • Nathan Fien: A hooker/halfback signed to add experience and versatility.
  • Neville Costigan: A forward who followed Bennett from the Broncos to the Dragons.
  • Ryan Hinchcliffe: Signed for the 2009 season.
  • Luke Priddis: Joined from the Panthers for the 2009 season.
  • Adam Cuthbertson: A forward who joined during the perio
Key Personnel Note:
Mark Gasnier: While not an external club signing, Bennett's influence was key in securing his return to the club from rugby union in 2010.
These additions helped the Dragons win the minor premiership in 2009 and 2010, and the club's first NRL premiership as a joint venture in 2010."

So while Bennett as we know has superior coaching skills, because of his skills he didn't need to sign marquee players to get us winning games including our only joint venture grand final victory. He was able to identify who we needed that had all the attributes to help bring success to the club and Bennett did not "overpay" to secure these guys.

If we can sign a coach that can identify exactly what type of players we need and is able to manage them like Bennett can then maybe we have a chance of success in the future.
