Aye we can’t be prisoners of the moment and react based on winning 2-3 games over the next few weeks

At the same time it’s a difficult set of fixtures so we can’t completely rule out young if there’s 4 losses in a row but the performances are much better

That's true. I don't think anyone expects Young should lead us on a 10 game winning streak but much improvement should be a realistic goal.

Deano has 2 big problems:
  1. The roster Flanno saddled him with.
  2. What has just gone down with the former head coaches son and the position of Deano's dad in the club.

I don't think Hornby will come back just to be an assistant.
Do you think he might get the Souths job once Wayne retires or another club will snap him up? Can't really see him being a head coach for at least another few years unless we take a chance on him for 27. Club has some really big decisions to make it will be interesting who they choose

Yes but if not, he'll want a head coach job elsewhere. Otherwise he'll stay under Bennett until Bennett retires.

Was thinking it probably helps that the cowboys and Payten win some games to prevent them making a call on potentially getting Dean Houng as their new HC

Gives us more time to assess and really cast the net far and wide. Wouldn’t be helpful for us if cowboys lose 3 in a row and Payten gets the Bullet and by round 13-14 they’ve decided Dean Young is their guy before we feel comfortable deciding on that
100% Cows winning games takes pressure off us doing something silly.. honestly I think if we win today (and it would be quite the upset) that will set in motion events that I dont think will be undone with him as our HC...

My maths is over the next 6 weeks.. 2 wins and the job is his, 1 win and it will be hard to undo the media narrative, 0 wins and hopefully sanity prevails.

See that's why im concerned about him, seems like Souths dont see Hornby as head coaching material.. and that could be unfair because they want someone with gravitas like Bennett and seems like they want Sam Burgess next.. and maybe Hornby is like a Steve Price.. a rly good assistant.

It would be a gamble to pick him up, as it would be to hire Dean, but this was my fear unfortunately that once Dean became interim, its going to be very hard to get an unanimous vote from the dragons board to replace him with someone else.. that's why I pray that the team either thrives or struggles under him.. but does it quickly.. to the point we can make that decision...

I also harp on about it.. but I rly wanted a different 2027 HC to the interim.. so we could announce it and enjoy 6-8mths of absolute media hope/bliss/joy/optimism, thats when u do ur best recruitment and retention work... players want in... the new HC is unscathed by this years losses.

Anyway not meaning to sound negative, I rly do hope Deano surprises me (and many of us)... and shows us hes the man for the job.. and I rly do think its actually Talau who will allow Dean to thrive.. Talau is the one with all the relationships with the young ones, he's proven his tactics work in cup, if hes open to letting Talau do a lot of the heavy lifting, it might end up being a good coaching partnership.. but tbh until Deano has 2 or 3 straight losses, I dont think we will see how he coaches under pressure, which is the reality of the NRL.. the coaches are always under pressure.

Talau should definitely have a spot in our first grade coaching staff fulltime. You said it correct he knows all the young guys well and that is our biggest problem, we need to keep these young guns positive and happy or we will set ourselves back 10+ years. I'm not sold on Young to be our head coach going forward but the fan in me wants to see us turn it around starting today. What a win it would be

All the Souths fans I’ve seen think Ben Teo or Burgess will be the heir to Bennett once he leaves

The more time goes on, the more I think Dean is the right man. Look at Benji & Foran, they have NO experience but are respected club legends - Young is experienced (NSW & Tonga too) and is arguably one of the biggest names ever to play for the club
