Old Farts Memories

Quite a story, quite an upbringing mate.
Is your given name Polish or Italian? Is Jo short for Joseph (Giuseppe)?

So even tho you are on hols still finding time to log in.
Mum wanted to call of the children the Italian version but my Dad said we live in England we need to bring the children up as English. So yes Joseph won the day over Giuseppe.

At the International Airport as we speak. On our way to our first stop Cape Town the start of our African safari adventures.

Safe trip and happy hunting on your safari Joseph. Have a great time. Hope you can get to places where there is wifi so that you can check out the forum and put your tips in.

My wife and I went to South Africa last year Jo and did the Tripadeal safari tours of Kruger National Park. We had a FANTASTIC time. Cape Town was also beautiful. I hope you get some good weather and can explore Table Mountain while you’re there.

If you like a tipple, I recommend you try the blueberry gin and blueberry tonic you can get over there. Barman at our resort put us onto it and by the end of our stay everyone in our group was drinking them!

My other red hot tip for Cape Town is book a night out here: https://goldrestaurant.co.za/. A group of us had a great night out there eating the local cuisine, playing djembe drums and enjoying the dancing and singing of the locals. Well and truly worth every cent.

After finally leaving that hell hole of a school my mother, step father and us two kids moved to Cronulla where I finished my education at Cronulla High. As we lived near Gunnamatta Bay us kids spent countless hours in its tidal pool. In addition we and mates spent a lot of time at Cronulla Beach. After all I had a lot of living to catch up on.

Welcome to the thread and forum @Gouley's Socks. Feel free to post. Btw your username does refer to the Dragons Scott Gourley, was one of my favorite players of the 90s. Was picked for only the one Test, should've played more.
Thanks Ritchie. It's nice to see a few familiar names (you included under your preferred name) - indeed some of the nicer, more respectful folks from a certain other place on the internet.

Yes my name is a reference to Scott. For some reason it always tickled me that his socks would be around his ankles and he generally looked dishevelled by the first tackle of the match.

Simple things I suppose!

:) I agree. But what a player. We could use another of him this very moment. Is GS ok?
Saw Scottie running along the pathway from Shelley Beach to Manly Beach many years back when me and the missus were doing a stroll along the same path and my wife commented on how physically well he looked as he loped along. I said that he used to be a player for the Dragons but now plays for the bloody Roosters. "By crikey" she said or words to that effect at the time - "if he still played for the Dragons, I'd become a member of the Dragons like you". She isn't much of a league fan unfortunately even to this day. :p

Me and mates had some great fun and thrills sliding down the Wanda sand hills (next door to Cronulla Beach) on home made sleds only a year before the Wanda Beach murders of two teenage girls. Had we known we'd have kept a wide berth of the place. But then again he was a predator and his victims were young females walking alone in isolated locations. To this day this horrendous crime remains a cold case.

Born in Sydney Darlinghurst at the Woman's Hospital as it was at the time ......... The Mum and Dad moved to Wollongong and opened a cafe in Crown st ........ Grew up there roaming the streets and playing footy ........ Then moved to Sydney at the age of 18 to play with the Dragons ....... That's all I can say ........

No Ritchie. Would have been nice to have grown up and be living in the area called by Peter Peters as "God's Country". But I was born in St George Hospital in 1947, the year in which the mighty Dragons finished in 4th position securing a spot in the finals but were beaten by the Western Suburbs Magpies in the elimination match.

My parents migrated to this Country escaping a war torn area overseas. My Mum and Dad travelled with my sisters who were 5 and 3 via a sea liner and arrived in Sydney and two weeks later I was born and I proudly call myself an Australian.

I lived in the Hurstville area (a Dragons area) initially as a babe and then the family moved to an inner suburb of Sydney called Pyrmont (a Tigers area) and I grew up in that area and attended the Ultimo Public School to year 6 (1958) - The one thing I can still remember when I was 8 or 9 at Ultimo PS, the deputy headmaster gave me a kick up the arse for not looking hard enough to pick up any litter on the ground at assembly (the bastard). We then moved to a mixed business shop in Camperdown which my Dad and Mum ran (so I do really know the goodies like triple treats ice cream and chiko rolls as we had them in the shop) and by the time we arrived at the shop there were 6 siblings in the family ( 2 older sisters, myself and 3 younger brothers) and I went to the Camperdown Public School for the balance of 1958. For High School in 1959 I was enrolled at Newtown Boys Technical High up to the Intermediate Certificate level - the really one bad thing that I experienced there was getting the cane for not passing a business studies test (another bastard of a teacher) and in 1962 went to Enmore Boys High to obtain the Leaving Certificate which I completed in 1964. I had a gap year in 1965 helping out in the family restaurant in King St City and in 1966 started working full time with the then Postmaster General's Department.

I started following the Dragons in 1958 (aged 11), a couple of years after the start of their 11 straight grand final wins. That was the beginning of my die hard love of the RedV, through thick and thin up to this day - 68 years later.

.......to be continued..
