DY just needs to be his own man and work with the strengths of the team. But I will never knock Bennett, how many past and current players have you ever heard knocking him. I do agree with your last sentence, but I will be forever grateful for what Bennett did for this club in the time we he was here. One of our biggest ever cockups was not retaining him for at least 5-6 years.
He's not very popular around Newcastle. Wayne Bennett that is.

Behind the facade of the friendly old man, Bennett is a ruthless competitor. It doesn't make me feel any better about Deano as head coach to have Bennett sing his praises.

But it's done now and he obviously gets along with our young forwards so that's a good start. Now he needs to be smart and ruthless himself in order to get the team back to where it belongs (consistently around the top of the table).
Yep he said the same about Price ....... Bennett is all about Bennett , not a fan of his anymore ........

I sit here and reading the comments about Bennett and Young and think to myself yes you are entitled to your opinion but what is it based on?, the head or the heart or on practical experience.

From an old coaches perspective these are my personal thoughts. Full disclosure I have met and had conversations with Bennett through his brother Bob who was my work boss, over many years at our Christmas parties and more importantly charity functions including Police Charity golf days back in the 1990s. He actually inspired me to have a crack at coaching which I did.

Time catches up with everyone even the best coaches in the world. I would say Bennett is recognised as being at the pinnacle of coaches in RL. So what do head coaches do?

Firstly they don't take to the paddock not nowdays so to criticise coaches for the failures of their playing squad is an easy out.

In my day I was clearly told what my roles, job description would be and I had to obtain a number of KPI's.

ROLES:
I am responsible for:
Team Selection
Technical and Tactical Planning
Analyising individual and team performance
Players development, identifying each players strengths and weaknesses
Communication and Management

I was not responsible for on field individual players and team failures. I was held responsible for failures of my attacking and defensive structures.

Many a time after a game you would go back to the clubhouse there was always a standing invitation for the opposition coaches and players to join us it was part of the culture back them.

Two comment made by Bennett to me always stuck ," You always have a winning or contingency game plan, you don't always have the cattle to complete it".

"You will always be judged by your teams on field performances and not on how good a bloke you are. Never make it personal, make your judgements from your head not your heart", wise and good advice.

Time will tell if Young will be a decent coach, recruitment is no longer an issue let us see what game plans unfold.

I don't really know (the finer points of being a coach) but he did wonders for us with:
  • Darius Boyd, Broncos reject
  • Beau Scott, Shonkies reject
  • Mick Weyman, Canberra reject
But IMO we shouldn't judge him so much on the success he had with the Broncos. He had most of the QLD Origin team at his disposal.

Then there was the incident with Andrew Gee. This suggests even with the advantage he enjoyed with that whole region, the 3rd most populated in the country, at his disposal, it still wasn't enough to win fairly. I know there is no evidence of cheating but if anyone can explain why Gee quit in order to not be compelled to answer salary cap questions, I'm listening, or reading.

It's been an ongoing criticism of Bennett for at least 10 years and possibly more, about what has taken place at various football clubs after he left, and frankly I've always found it laughable. When a coach leaves at the end of his contract it's up to the club to take responsibility for everything that happens from then on. That includes appointment of the next coach, and player departures / arrivals. God knows we had a chance to tie him up for longer and we messed that up well and truly. Or maybe he just wanted a new challenge, who knows.

It is a measure of the man however that these kind of ludicrous accusations about him somehow being responsible for what transpires after he leaves are so loud. When someone who makes such a difference to your club moves on, it is a huge hole to fill. But he gave me memories I will keep with me till the day I die and for that I will always be thankful.

He left the Dragons with an aging squad but it was mind boggling that every coach after him looked for short-term success rather than a long-term plan. Or mind boggling they were allowed to do it. When Griffin came in he talked the talk about 'building the squad from the ground up' then went ahead and signed Alvaro, McGuire, McCulloch among others. Crazy stuff.

I appreciate what Bennett did in terms of adding the missing pieces of the puzzle with the squad and instilling belief in the guys. No doubt his players hold him in high regard.
But when he left he seemed to take all the air out of the joint - as well as his backroom staff and some handy players - and things have never been the same since. And I still kinda resent him for that.
Do get what you are saying, to me I remember that when it was announced he wasn't staying, the whole club deflated, so much so that we were at the top of the ladder and fell apart after that. I didn't resent him I resented the stupidity of the club, wtf was Doust thinking, Tinkler saw the opportunity and slid straight in. Was one of the worst decisions made by the club in its history, and we have made some big ones.

Yes. And his job was to win things for us when he was here, not to leave us with a squad that was old or young in particular. That's when our recruitment department should have taken over. If only we'd had a DA type back then.
Absolutely. He did his job. With the aging squad the team was always going to be for some short-term pain but that's normal for a team which has been up around the top for 3 years in a row.

100%, Penrith are living proof of that, they are not going to be the same team as what they have been. Still a good team but I dont think they will have that domination they used to have.

Constructive robust conversations and opinions should not be berated or impinged by such inappropriate language
Who gives a f*ck stop whinging about old times! We have the best squad we have had in probably 8 years with a coach who is unknown just fucken look forward to it!

With a good, young core Penrith prove that to be up around the top for more than 3 years is possible but by the time old Wayne came along, our core group were already approaching veteran stage.

We have a good young core of forwards now. That's half the battle.

He wanted 5 years Dave and that idiot Doust only would give him 3 years. You dont f$#k around with someone like Bennett, and if you are looking at shonky deals just ask mr Doust about the sale of the club to WIN corp.
Then again, he could have agreed to an extension or signed on for another 3:years.
If he'd wanted 5 years so badly, wouldn't the 3-year contract tabled by us have been a deal-breaker at the start?

Knowing the man briefly, to me he wasn't really a negotiator . He was a straight forward, up front person who got to the point with no bs, didn't suffer fools. Tabled his demands wasn't met so left to our detriment.
