NSW Cup and Jersey Flegg, 2025

Missed the game how
Wow, we let 10 and 12 point leads slip away multiple times in the game, ended with a Draw, could be costly in the big scheme of things.
No live coverage. Bummer. Bar says they will replay it and show this evening.

Yes Jd but losing some back line firepower in Lyric, Charlie and TPH. Again with all this chopping and changing Flegg is lacking team cohesion. Still pleased those guys have been promoted and have some time there.

Another sin bin, is discipline starting to take a back seat with this team? Still we should hold on with 5 to go . The Roosters did us a favour beating the Eels earlier this afternoon.

Charlie Heidke is a stud man, liked what I’ve seen from the young guys in cup today
The fact that he is playing NSW Cup for a few games now is a good indication that we are looking at him.. but ffs upgrade the guy, hes so much better than anyone else coming through, and I think yet to have a preseason with the main squad..

Did do 1 or 2 things I thought were a bit risky.. a ball he threw after breaking the line to TPH.. I dunno how TPH caught it.. obviouosly a few things to sort out.. but keep nick in the forwards and let him play cup.. if we have a way of giving him a contract, maybe he can even play 1 game in firsts later in the year.. perhaps depending on injuries etc.

There is something in Buchanan and Lyric and Williams also.. I dont want to insult them, all 3 could make it...but they are not compete packages.. I still need to see them develop in NSW Cup yet.

Their so reactive, I bet their waiting to fill out some top 30 spots before giving him an upgrade whether that be development or even a top 30 deal

He deserves something because like u said I think he’s a step ahead of the other guys
If I had to rank them based on their level right now and their potential I’d go
1.Heidke (Great all round, no obvious weakness)
2.Williams(Elite speed,Hard to tackle,runs hard)
3.Buchanan(Fast and can play both sides, small)
4.Lyric (The worst athletically but can the best aerially)

The St George pathways will have Phoenix John’s and Corneilius Papualli who are both in that Stephen Chrichton mould

Destin Tausala (from the clips I’ve seen from Justa looks a good prospect) should be part of the Steelers Matt’s team next year who will be a force with some of the current guys back a year older and better for the run

It’s funny how fast the outlook in pathways can change, 1 year ago it looked pretty bare in the backs and now there’s 3 or 4 guys to be really excited about

Some of the flegg stream is now up.. but yeah something went wrong technically....

Had a big lead so 36-36 sux.. sinbin involved.. but better than a loss..

Lot of players r in Cup today, so hopefully that stream works =)

Edit: Finally f***ing Nick back in the 2nd row..

A lot of changes doesn't help.
Big comebacks and blow out scores result of players and teams struggling with the extra 10 min of play.

Their so reactive
If I had a criticism, this would be it.. its why I think we need a list manager.. Flanno is too in the 'next weeks game' frame to really be reflecting on who is the best 'left winger' or 'right centre' for 9-12mths time.. Tamale is the most recent example.. we keep backing boring safe first graders.. not ready to give guys who really stand out at cup level a preseason, more cash.. and a genuine crack.. tbf I was ok with the Tamale decision at the time, because I thought we were backing Finau (and Sloan to a lesser extent)... and I also didnt factor what 1 more preseason would do to Tamales development.. and also tbf it took us a long time and mixed efforts at fullback/centre to realise he was 'just a winger'.. but its still a huge stuff up with some of the other extensions we gave lesser talent instead..

10 years ago I would err with the caution like Flanno does, but I think its different now, youth and speed is the difference in this fast paced grind/slog of a game, e.g. a 1on1 foot race or your line speed can be the difference... you have to be looking at these cup level guys (not all of them.. just the really elite ones) rather than trying to sign someone elses reject as a filler.. I mean you need a mix.. but we just seem so slow to hone in on the young guns.. bar some of the forwards who we perhaps even rushed.. its perhaps more just a backline thing...

Commentator was frothing over Halangahu today, said very late on in the match he’d love to see him add some second phase play. Because he’s very ‘safe’, it’s good to know he can add that string to his bow.

Always seems to get an arm free or make an extra 6-7m with 3 guys tackling him. Line running as well can improve but these things come with matches played and experience

Yah I heard that comment and thought it was quite astute from all the usual commentator hysteria.. I keep saying for all his tractor like runs, its a slow play the ball and I dont mind it cause its inspiring, but his runs benefit the highlight real more than the flow of the team.. but.. he will get stronger and heavier as he ages, i.e. he is still SG Ball age.... I dont mind him keeping it simple for now, esp if he sees 1st grade this year.. rly dont want errors.. just want strong runs and good defence and line speed type stuff.. but definitely at some point for sure he will need to add an extra element to his power game.

Shadi the standout for Flegg getting better every week.
The middle ran out of steam back end of each half.
We were lucky to hold on for draw
I thought they would struggle up front, between last week and this, the Flegg team were missing Hutchinson, Liu, CST, & Treweek.... also missing TPH, Lyric, Williams and Heidke out back.. thats more than half the backs also gone.. Heidke alone.. especially outside Reed, is almost a guaranteed 6 point difference in every game ive seen him play in Flegg.

What I found fascinating though is TPH was decent last week against Parra (in Flegg) but that was a 64-6pt thumping, but the rest of the year he was very average.... really clunky.... but I honestly thought his NSW Cup debut today was the best hes looked since the SG Ball grand final in 2024... trying to fill ramseys boots no less.. if he was just a little bigger the kid would be a superstar.. I maybe he could still be that Kini like player, but its a hell of a mountain to overcome.. his try saver on the 80th min buzzer was amazing too.

Similarly Liu I honestly barely noticed in recent games in Flegg, but today he played the entire first half and bent the line on nearly every run.. I suspect there are negotiations going on in the background and today was a test.. its hard to fathom that players look better in the higher grade..

But Hammoud I hope he comes on.. must have no match fitness after his time off.. would be lovely to put pressure on LKT and Atkinson in the next1-2 years..
