I'm not sure. I have always said a backrower. Perhaps we lack a genuine centre coming through JF.
That’s the problem mate, he’s a backrower playing centre. It’s a worry that we don’t have a genuine reserve grade centre that can push into 1st grade, instead we’re relying on a 20 year old who has never played centre before this run of cup games. It’s like Flanno is trying to mould Nick into a Talaki type of player

To my eye we need more speed in our backline. If your backline doesn't pose an attacking threat its much easier to defend.

NSW Cup Notes (36-22 Loss):
  • It was all going perfectly at 16-6 before Ramsey copped an ankle injury and went off soon after + Glover got sinbinned for holding a player back that noone saw.. and Parra scored twice in that period and really sort of dominated for most of the game from there.. confident and a couple of speed men were a bit much for us.
  • I do feel like there are a lot of blow-ins now that NSW Cup is going well, and I feel they got found out a bit once things didnt go to plan for once.
  • Ilias was pretty awful, pretty much everything he did didnt come off.. and he was trying obviously to showcase himself for 1sts, not blaming the loss on him, just mentioning it because its going to come up as a topic all week, especially if we lose in 1st grade.
  • Losing Ramsey was huge.. Sloan obviously a handy replacement (and was stoked/energetic to get to play fullback again) but its just not the same, he didnt rly do much wrong though, and nearly pulled off a highlight reel moment, but also it messed up the outside backs, we had Haele playing with Sione on 1 edge.
  • Nick although some powerful runs got found out at ctr today, fast skillful players is too much for him, insert my daily rant that he should have been playing in the 2nd row for months now.. mickey mouse stuff.
  • Sione dropped bombs and didnt have his happiest day, he did score a try and put one on for his brother.
  • Glover was ok but got burnt 1 time by Volkman in defence.
  • Tonga was pretty solid, Sele was pretty solid bar 1 mistake I recall
  • Buchanan was average, its time to drop him to Flegg imo and promote Heidke
  • Connor early on put on 2 tries I think, some rly good dummy half work
  • Noone else really stood out, it was a game where once we lost momentum against a Top3 side with good halves, oh and a goalkicker 6/6 with most from the touchline.. that was just a bit too much.. not embarrassed though, just stuff didnt go our way, and the injury+sinbin was the differe
There was a try scored 2nd half where the commentators said Halangue missed the tackle, was it Jake or Haele, who missed it..

I know this sounds cruel, but that ACL to Metcalfe I assume means Tanah Boyd will finish the year in 1st grade, thats a huge game changer for the evenness of the NSW Cup competition... not sure if they have someone ready to replace him from Flegg?

Like if we lost any of LKT/Ilias/Glover/Kyle, I assume we should just move Reed or Hammoud up a grade.. Reed is sort of ready to go anyway if needed.

Halangahu missed the tackle on Volkman who went straight through and they scored
Volkman was rly good.. but I spose he should be at this level.. its just 1 moment with Jacob.. but it did dawn on me that its a big step up to 1st grade, and he might be needed at some point.. possibly even soon.. I mean is Nick gonna cover Val again? Actually prob not cause if Allan is fit.. he can cover ctr.. might mean Sloan comes back yet again next week..

Edit: I forgot about RFM.. good coverage.

Jacob has a big future in the game no doubt but he is only 18 years old and you’re right rev, it’s a big step up. People banging on about him playing first grade based on games against kids his own age is silly in my eyes. He has some deficiencies with his defence and lateral movement but with time and experience that will hopefully sort itself out.

Next week, gee wiz where do we start.
out: Stewart, Couchman and probably Leilua. Fifita, played well and was great to see some hard runs from the kick off’s. Is his knee going to be sweet??

That’s 3 forwards minimum that need to be replaced maybe 4 with Vili. Who comes in??
If it’s Sele, RFM and Blocker then Fark me.
Do you punt on LPT, Sele, Nick, and Jacob out of necessity or just stick to the same old who have been there done that and are on the way out??
For the backs: Val to be replaced by Allan and does Flanno swallow his pride and play Finau or bring back Sloan?? Now between Sloan
and Lawson there could be deadset 10 bombs dropped between them in the 80 mins.
Raiders, top of the table and deservedly so, going to be a shellacking whatever Flanno does so maybe just bite the bullet and play Nick and Jacob off the bench, we’re no hope anyway if the Raiders show up

Our fixtures to end the season are brutal

Of all the games left I think Manly/Souths/Cowboys are the only games we have a genuine chance of winning

Maybe Penrith in the last round if they rest their players for finals

I hate the way the draw works.. because we have 'rivalries' we get the joy of playing the Dogs & Sharks 2 times every year ongoing.. so thats 2 Top4 teams locked in, plus the Raiders coming up twice also..

Meanwhile just 1 game against sides like the Tigers, Knights, Titans.. its such a difference..

I know this is a losers way of looking at things, but for a struggling side to get out of the cellar for a decade.. this stuff matters..

Yeah but dogs have been awful for the last 10 years before that, so you can't count that really, i still would prefer o play Dogs, Sharks and a few others twice a year instead of one no matter where they're on the table..
Slightly off topic, i would like to see eventually 24 teams in the comp, play each other once then have semi's, following year you just reverse where you played so every 2 years you play home and away against each team, anyway i digress..

Usually we play the rabbits and roosters x 2 as well and they are always good (Rabbitohs last 2-3 years not so much)

The sharks are lucky, having no genuine rivalry besides with us and Melbourne

They always get the rails run with the fixtures

They kept Lorenzo Talataina incredibly quiet, some good names in that parra side overall and it was just utter domination

If they play close to that level for the rest of the season the flegg side could give the finals a real shake

The impressive one was
Mathew Alhazim 186 in 55min
I have to confess I dont watch him too closely, but numerous times this year I see his frame in a hitup or tackle.. and I think its Halangahu for a few moments.. hes built just as thicc..

No idea on his longer term potential though.. he is competing with a few including DMeafou who is the forgotten man once again, another that needs some luck with injuries.

Saw him a few years back, pretty sure he was in Matts with Loko, Latu and i thought he was the standout player in the game, pretty sure he is from Parramatta Fairfield Pats, so probably wanted to prove something against them on the weekend, has a twin brother at souths last i heard.
