ANZAC Day v Roosters

Dean has his work cut out for him with the roster. There’s some quality arriving.

Unless things go horribly and there’s no improvement, you might think he’d get one year (27) with a better side to see what he can do. Some kind of reward for stepping into the sweat shop.

It’s his opportunity to push his claim.

Realistically, if he can drag the boys kicking and screaming into 14th or above…maybe he should be fancied for another season.

That’s probably my test for him at the moment.

He spoke really well at the presser, many insights, I was kind of impressed, but I don’t think he should give positions away. That said, he probably had a reason.

The old “ we weren’t good enough, we must be better” is anyone else tired of the obvious?!

Most losing coaches roll it out, almost all captains do. So lame isn’t it?! lol.

And I rave on about it, but his own game, a lot of it was self-constructed. So he understands the importance of self improvement.

Brad Arthur has rebuilt clubs, but he broke beef stroganoff with Lomax. It was a hunt of a thing to do.
Good points TSP. With the Lomax thing, Arthur was a hunt at the time that it occurred - April 2024 - but Lomax could not be coached by Arthur as Arthur was sacked in May 2024 and Trent Barrett became the interim. Lomax came to the Eels when Ryles became the head coach and Lomax was put on the wing - probably Arthur would have put him in the centres. Needless to say, Arthur was able to lure Lomax so that makes me feel that he could get some beauties for us if he became the HC. He did get Mitchel Moses to leave the Tigers to join the Eels as well in 2017 and others of course.

I don't mind Arthur. He strives on challenges and he loves big men up the middle. If he is the one picked to be our fulltime HC, it would need to be for a long term of say 5 years. He was at the Eels for 10 years, went through some salary cap saga with Dan Anderson being there at the time, able to reach finals and a grand final, also came last in 2018.

Sorry to write all this up on the game thread - just continuing with the conversations.

We had the sin-bins and at least one try when Roosters blatantly knocked on and we had the worst fullback and wingers combination in the history of the NRL. All this is true and is talked about a lot. But one thing no one is talking about is the fact the Roosters played very well. I think in the first half they only made 1 mistake and they were hardly playing conservatively. Similar in the second half. In the face of all this, we did well to score 16 points.

Yes, credit where credit is due all round.

Was trying to temper everyones expectations last week cause before Dean had even coached a game.. the media was carrying on like problem solved... and demanding we sign him for 5yrs..... But 2027 is a lifetime away.... if u think Flanno was under pressure after losing the first 7... we had another 17 to go before we even get there (16 now).. we are only just getting warmed up in terms of 2026 pressure.

The crucial part for me is going to be keeping the group together and competing, on top of actually unravelling a bit of the flanno footy out of them at the same time.. because if they dont stay together... and with gus doing his best to destabilise us further.. im very concerned about retaining our kids come Nov 1...... im less worried about 2027... thats a problem for another day.

Also, why oh why do we hate hang time on kicks ...
Watching the kickoffs from sloan he wants to get the ball into the in goal which is fair enough but if you do that on a shallow height kick the hang time is less than doing it on a kick that goes higher.

As a result, they take the ball, get a run up and make it as far as the 20m line esp as our defensive line seems to stop a metre or so before it could to set. We give up so many easy meters.

A kick off is not just kick it far, it has to be kick it far and high.

i imagine its the risk of the ball going out.. or maybe we just need a different kicker.

I think It relates to the game because I raised the press conference and expectations. Plus I wanted to respond. If the mods wanted to move it, that’s fine, but unless you cite me, I could miss it. That would be sad as I am always interested in your thinkings.

The take away from your piece is that if Dean has the troubled season, BA should be in the final round of interviews.

You submit that he has a fair track record of turning things around and recruitment.

And that SGI could use his treacherous and hard nosed attitude working for it, instead of against it. Forget the past, as a hill to die on. I understand.

You’ve actually gone some way to change my mind on BA. Thanks for opening the window a bit.

People always value consistency in points, but circumstances, times and people change.

Back to the game for balance as well, the easy meters were hard to cop. They were allowed too much momentum and that takes tight and determined defence. But it needs to be consistent.

When you’ve got a less glamorous squad, you need more mobility in effective defence and discipline. That’s your only hope of staying in the contest against blue chip. Once again, you hit the rorters on their upswing. They were well prepared and fine tuned.

he cant help himself... its his muscle memory.. he has to reach out and touch the ball, he doesnt have a thought to pulling away.... so many times ive seen him touch and hence knock on contested bombs he was never going to be able to catch...... or even picking up balls in the ingoal.. just gets his fingers out and knocks those on too.. every now and then you put it down to luck of the draw, but its so consistent.

Kerr in the drop zone, prime position, sloan - WTF?
If sloan isnt there, kerr takes the catch and we score .. i mean we are still flogged but seriously ...

The capture probably sums up his career shortcomings to date.

His footy instinct tends to overcome his
composure.

He’s like an out of tune violin sometimes. That crushing dissonance. It’s loud too.
